In terms of balance between checks and difficulty, if you could turn off the big patches of 8 pieces of grass then that'd significantly reduce good item density. Obscure pieces of grass in random rooms in dungeons seem to add difficulty since it forces you to visit rooms you otherwise wouldn't go to and to be more thorough in certain areas, but the big patches just make Termina field and Hyrule field super degenerate with how much you get out of them.

Considering how few masks and songs you had by the end, I think this was just lucky. Maybe try a few more with grass before deciding.
