In regards to the Tyranid/Squat deal, another plot hole it brings up is that the Squat homeworlds are all stated to be lifeless planets that are resistant to terraforming. Exactly the last type of place you'd expect a Tyranid to attack; almost no biomass whatsoever. You know what would actually make a lot of sense to destroy the Squats? Necrons. Dwarves dig too greedily and too deep, they awaken a bunch of Necron tombs that wipe them out.
They could just ignore it completely, although I doubt they will. But it was only a throw away line from Someone, not like it was ever made official lore

Was thinking the same thing. Maybe even talking or further, with a squat league taking out a smaller tombworld, harvesting some of their technology. With the leagues fundamental tenet to share new advancements and discoveries.
That could be what warranted a response from a larger Nekron dynasty, to obliterate any who were in possession of the stolen knowledge.
Not a 100% sure as how protective they are of their technology, but they are unlikely to hold favorable opinions on robbers and looters.

There are many plotholes to Nids almost completely wiping out Squats, invading a planet with little biomass and an abundance of mineral wealth isn't one of them.

The squats being a kind of grey zone between the Imperium and the Tau is an interesting concept. Dwarves are usually depicted as rather secretive, self focused and suspicious of others so them being something like a connecting tissue, a more moderate faction between the extremes is intrigueing.
They drink, build and drink more. Why would Imperial hate them? Space Wolves would love them to drinking contest.

@@YoBen100 A: the squats are arguable genetic mutations which certain parts of the imperium wouldn't be to excited about. B the squats are independtly minded and oriented, never truly surrendering their autonomy to the Imperium even when they had their own planetary systems under the inperiums semi-protection, and I doubt this mindset has changed.
Na they need to make the xenophobia of the rest of the imperium look moderate all while eating baggis and riding motorcycles/power trikes or magical trains of kebab removal.

I think the League of Votan being the last surviving league makes perfect sense narratively and from a model perspective, as it can be made up of 100s of strongholds with their own colour schemes and lore. Here’s hoping for some squat novels in the near future
The fact that it is Leagues of Votann and not League of Votann, suggests to me that Votann is either a place or an individual. My money is that at least one world or system named Votann with a number of leagues escaped the Tyrannids. I'm hoping they're kinda like a civilization given over to revenge, Slayers and Grudgebearers all.
@@Stonegolem6 It has been revealed the Votann are A.I. cores. Most likely they were an obscure offshoot who became the only survivors because they were already used to hiding. It also creates a believable reason for them just now stepping on to the galactic stage as their Votann are starting to decay. If the Admech ever found out what the Votann are they'd probably try to start a war just to steal all that sweet sweet Dark Age tech.

I can imagine a dreadful scene of a squat leader or something having a private conversation with Robute Gulliman. Imagine the primarch finally meeting someone who can relate to his worries for the imperium. Some people who aren’t trying to religiously crusade across the galaxy, but instead keep to the old ideals of humanity. The furthering of their race through science and discovery. I can imagine the squats feeling uncomfortable In the modern imperium but going along with it. Hoping that they can bring some of the old ways back to human kind.

@@koke6886 oh it’d be fascinating! But Gulliman finds the current state of the imperium to be absolutely insane with its rampant religious fever and fear of scientific discovery. The squats might also find the current state of the imperium to be rather disturbing as well considering they seem to be logical and scientifically driven.

This is why the Leagues of Votaan would have such an uneasy alliance with the Imperium. With sub factions like the Ecclesiarchy, the Black Templars, as well as the puritan factions of the Imperial Inquisition being as overzealous as they are in venerating the Emperor as an almighty deity. Their differing perspectives on how best to stem the tide of Chaos and hostile Xenos forces that continue to assail the forces of order, could put Guilliman and the Imperium's other sub factions who are sympathetic to the Squats in an awkward predicament.
It would be quite funny if the squats were still in their home-worlds, fighting a massive Tyranid Hive fleet, and sending distress calls for millennia.
But some imperial schmuck bureaucrat forgot to place the scroll on the right shelf.
Could be a gold opportunity to flesh out Squats and Tyranids.
Like the northern dwarfs in fantasy. The ones cut off by chaos.

A thought I had about tyranids taking them out. The squats are a faction that fought the imperium, pre splitting of space marine legions into chapters, to such a standstill that they negotiated autonomy. Their strongholds are fully self sustaining with hydroponic gardens etc. So I refuse to believe that a single hive fleet, or more accurately a splinter fleet, could wipe them out so quickly. But their worlds are lifeless so their population was concentrated in the strongholds. Maybe their worlds have just been swarming with tyranids for a few hundred years and theyve been trapped underground in their strongholds due to the shadow in the warp. Unable to communicate out or travel until they could slowly but inexorably grind down the hive fleets biomass enough that they could escape. Basically the farming episode of love death and robots especially the ending.

Eventually the Nids would starve. I just can't see that theory working out. Probably the worse faction to name drop when explaining their disappearance. Orks would've been a more believable pick. (before Necrons)
@@therope340 The Nids try to recover their own lost biomass right? I don't think it's unreasonable for the Nids to be barely subsisting on these planets, constantly recycling their own biomass, recovering a little here and there when they briefly break in to a stronghold. Still an apocalyptic threat but not strong enough to outright win, or even to pack up and move to another planet.

From your description of the Homeworlds, I doubt the Tyranids would find them too appetizing. But if they were hungry enough to attack. I can see the Squats caving in the entrances to their subterranean cities, and digging in deeper. Hopefully with a stronghold leader flipping the bird while exclaiming "Dig us out yer bastards"

Way back when GW still operated its own forums (early 00's) there were so many flame wars over the squats that they implemented a policy of permanently banning any user for the mere use of the word squat. I always thought it kind of funny that saying 'squat' would get you 'squatted'

In regards to the Tyranid explanation, GW could take some inspiration from the Late Bronze Age Collapse. In the past, historians' explanation for the sudden dissapearance of many Bronze age civilizations was that they were invaded by a force known as the "Sea Peoples". Over time however, new evidence has shown this to be incorrect and that the collapse was likely caused by a multitude of factors that, together, overwhelmed the capabilities of these civilizations. The Squats being taken out by the Tyranids may be the common explanation spread among the Imperium, but it may be that through future stories we get from surviving Squats, we will learn that this was just one of the factors.

Yeah, the “Sea People” were likely a combination of factions, like desperate migrants fleeing climate-induced famine, internal conflict and peasant uprising and there were also factors like the disruption of the delicate supply chains that kept the Bronze Age empires running, rather than one mysterious group of enemies who singlehandedly defeated all the Mediterranean empires.
It's important to remember that, because of the table top games, every faction has a reason to fight with every other faction. They'll have a plurality of reasons for their collapse.
Well, anything's better than just accepting the stupid Tyranid explanation.

Bone is stress adaptive tissue. Higher gravity would put selection pressure on creatures who’s bone matrix and cardiovascular systems could adapt to higher pressures and higher force loads. Squats make sense in terms of physics.

Yeah was gonna comment this. ISS astronauts experience decreased bone mass and density after extended periods in zero G, the inverse just makes logical sense in terms of how the body responds.
High gravity could produce multiple effects; squats and ogrins would both be plausible examples of what might happen, depending how verdant the environment around them is. High gravity+nutrition/atmosphere scarce=something like a squat. High gravity+nutrition/atmosphere ultra plentiful but lacking specific chemicals on the world for neurological development/super abundant lead causing brain and genetic damage=something like an ogrin. Ratlings, however, dont make that much sense unless they have low gravity AND thin atmosphere or poor nutritional availability from their homeworlds. If they had better atmosphere and nutrition, youd expect to see something more like belters from The Expanse; extremely tall, rail thin and physically weak but exceptionally dexterous, and barely able to support themselves under earth or even martian gravity with having to do such for to long potentially causing long term health complications or even death as their lungs and heart are crushed beneath their own weight or their circulatory system works itself apart under the strain, joints becoming horribly dislocated from simply trying to stand or bones breaking from otherwise minor falls.

Makes sense that the squads got integrated instead of conquered.
-They most likely still had very big ties to each other so perhaps they were just to big of a faction compared to other hunan remnants.
- Their high gravity worlds would make the use of normal human troops hard so only Space Marines could act on their worlds adding a big strain even in the great crisade
-Their technical knowhow and production capabilitys are a perfect balance to the Mechanicus making sure that if one betrays the Imperium there would be another options.
Maybe that's why they're been wiped. The mechanics felt threatened and decided to fuck em over Somehow so they would have the monopoly

Mark3 armour was brought into production specifically to fight the squats according to old lore
A civilisation with high technology (including shielding) that is deep underground on planets that appear to be lifeless - is unlikely to be wiped out by the Tyranids. Some planets might be destroyed - but others would shield themselves off from detection (essentially cut themselves off - perhaps for a very long period of time). Especially as they were self sufficient in both food and raw materials.
I think that last bit is onto something - I reckon one explanation, given the location of their homeworlds and unlikely odds of their extinction, is they've been using advanced dark age AI to hack Imperial records and effectively fake their own death.

12:48 When referring to realistic mutations due to incresed gravity, I think that pretty much Games Workshop got it right, increased gravity does in fact have a noticeable and somewhat fast effect in bone density and length. Over time organisms would have decreased height so that mass center is closer to the ground, and so that bones can grow thicker and shorter and can better support weight.
I read a story called Dragon's Egg recentlyIt features an alien civilization made up of degenerate neutronium living on a *pulsar.* The gravity is some ridiculously high multiple of Earth's, so they are almost two dimensional and afraid of heights because even the slightest fall is fatal. Really good novel by the way.

@@woaddragon i think it depends on the mega fauna on the planet. Bigger ogryns might not make sense purely based on gravity but if they evolved that way because it was the only way to survive then that would make more sense
Like with the sands of Dorne, the Squats only retreat into deeper chasms of their world, never truly becoming extinct like many species before them.

1st and 2nd edition art and models are some of the most wonderful mixtures goofy. I'm glad they managed to keep some of that with the orcs. Just wish there was one other light-hearted army out there.
I have always been a fan on dwarves, imagine my disappointment when I started watching 40k videos and found out that they removed them back in the 90s. But they are back😮
It's crazy cool how even after the Leagues of Votann codex has been released, this video is still valuable and interesting with so much great content. Luetin is a true artist, and I think he deserves more attention.

I am personally very excited about the Squats not only because they haven't been prevalent for years, but because we finally have an official parody of Dwarves from Fantasy and Age of Sigmar, very excited for what lies ahead for the future of the Squats and other less known sub human species like ogryns and beastman

Binary Succession is *SO* good. The audiodrama version is included in the Endless War collection which is definitely worth a credit.
Honestly, the whole Tyranids thing seems less of a "who cares" and more of a "would you idiots please shut up about the Squats already?" Now that GW is invested in the Squats again, they might feel inclined to rehash the situation.
The April Fool's trailer had them entering an Imperial Vessel ravaged by Tyranids, so maybe the League is acting out their grudge with the Tyranids, and that's why they're only "coming back" as the Tyranids are pushing deeper into civilized space
I know they've only released one image of a miniature so far, but looking at it makes me wonder if GW looked at what Mantic has done with their Forge Fathers range, and went "hmmm..."
Be nice for GW to get slapped for IP theft when they try to block anything to do with war hammers or extraterrestrial military units lol
In my head canon the squats just "hid deeper" until the tyranids went by, so much so that even the imperium couldnt locate them.
They could easily tie this in to the current stuff with Ontarius. Such as maybe kryptman sent the tyrainds their direction. And he used his power to hide his crime.

As they were developing the Dwarven Archetype they will have looked at the fundamentals and how a twisted sci-fi version might turn out and then realised... oh wait, that’s the Mechanicus.
Okay, hear me out; Warp Trains. Heavily armoured, travel through the warp, blindside your opponents with a teleporting train on the battlefield. Effective for inter-Stronghold travel and trade.
This is the one thing that 40k was missing for me. I love Dwarves, and when I was first getting into 40k about 2 years ago now I was super sad to learn that they were effectively phased out of existence. Can’t wait until we gets news on a box set or a Start Collecting, I’m pre ordering that IMMEDIATELY

Actually you would expect them to develop to be lighter. Any extra weight would be even more detrimental in high gravity. They might be short and strong, but probably also skinny and hollow bones, so that they can move. Being thick would be a huge detriment in high gravity.

One thing you mention towards the end is the squats returning as a small "good guy" faction, a glimmer of hope in this darkness. But this sounds a lot like the older iterations of the Tau, which as far as I can tell (I was not playing back then) was not liked by the fanbase which led to the darker side to their lore (which still is not all too extreme). Would you think GW would retread the same ground, introduce a small good guy faction to please some then slowly darken it up, or just leave it as the faction sharing most of our modern ideals by a large margin?
The dwarfs of Warhammer Fantasy were a "good guy" faction right up until you slighted one, knowingly or not. Fast forward a bit and suddenly you're dead, your village where the slight took place has been wiped off the map, and a grudge has been struck from the book. Given that they've almost assuredly borrowed some tropes from the dwarfs of old while redesigning the squats I'd be a little hesitant to think that they'll be a shining light in the grimdark.
You are not wrong. The 2001 tau codex painted the fledgling race as a far too 'white'.
It wasn't until their inclusion in the fantastic dawn of war series and the 2nd codex that they became more grey
@@paulyg405 I have to disagree. I don't think it needs a 'good guy' faction. The fact 40k is dozens of shades of grey and not purely black and white is a positive aspect.
Nearly every faction thinks what they are doing is the right thing to do and they are the 'good guys'
Every army in both 40k and WFB had their own shades of grey. Ethereal mind control, Tau eugenics, Farsight going rogue and his Farsight Enclaves variant army list, Ethereal Caste totalitarian theocracy etc. have been a thing since 3E Codex: Tau 2001, which was also further elaborated on in WD 262 Andy Chambers' Designer's Note section, also published on GW website at the time.
I really hope that the new Squats are the Demiurge. That they are tangentially related to T'au just like how there are so many tangentially related armies with humans. Also I think it'd be really interesting to see a hybrid of ancient human tech and T'au tech. As well as showing an alternative way for humans to exists other than the Imperium.

The Squats were almost completely destroyed by [insert reason here] and are now squatting on other worlds until they can reclaim their lost Strongholds.
I for one would prefer the Squats to maintain the grim darkness of the 40k 'verse, and I think there's a few ways that could be done. One, which you mentioned, is that they could be a last dying light of what humanity could have been, a painful reminder. But I think a more interesting option, which would be more in line with them being dwarves (though you could do both), is apathy. They have better culture and technology than the Imperium, and they could have become a real player, but they just weren't interested in anything outside their own realm. Then they were ruined by some force, and now the time when they could have been great has passed. And even if they could reclaim their homeworlds (a very dwarven goal), their ambitions remain narrow and rooted.
I think the Kharadron were such a good remix of the classic fantasy dwarves trope, they're among if not the most technologically developed race in sigmar and they're pushing outwards, expanding and fighting tzeench for domination of Chimeron
I just wish they did that with most of the races/factions it’s weird seeing freeguild human soldiers looking exactly like the empire of this destroyed world.
The Kharadron look so out of place (but still really cool)sci-fi, I feel like they were just GW testing the waters for the return of the Squats.

Always been rooting for the return of the squats. Ive always imagined which ever great event came for the squats they survived by making global core karaks. Deep in the planets core the squats would drill into the heart of the planets. Using the thermal energy to survive and power some impressive defensive weapons to fend off which ever great cataclysmic foe came for them. The great squat core engine keeping them alive sounds badass to me.
A spot on image for a flexible lore is the simile between some realignment of lore and a painful chiropractic treatment. Perfect.
I'm very interested in seeing and hearing more about the Squats or how they are now called the Leagues of Votan! 💪
Random thought, but they’ve been awfully quiet for a long time and high technological equipment and weapons far beyond the imperium's previous efforts were made for the primarus, I wonder if they had any sort of trade contract with Belisarius Cawl.
I can definitely see Cawl doing odd jobs for the Squats to gain their favour and tech
This is so cool, I was a kid in school when my big brother introduced me to 40k and he actually gave me a squat bike to paint, that looked like the unshaven biker guy from down the road. Then I rediscovered 40k a few years ago, just before the whole primaris situation. Glad to see them back.

My personal theory on the Squats disappearance is the barren world's they lived on were in fact Necron Tomb world's
And the idea of Tyranids wiping them were just just a cover because the Imperium didn't know of the Necrons awakening

I have to thank luetin for providing such an easy way to get to know Warhammer lore, I listened to the devastation of Baal recently and absolutely loved it, slowly going to work my way through the Horus heresy series as I'm on false gods now and can't wait to hear more

13:10 Birds hollow bones don't actually make their bones lighter, it's to help with breathing. Also, bones make up a tiny percentage of body weight, so it would just be a dangerous complication. Thicker bones would be more likely; so a stocky dwarf is actually fitting.

Wouldn't it be messed up that its the inquisition that tried to exerminatus the squats and blame it on the tyranids. Since the squats did not involve in imperial affairs (e.g. horus heresy), the inquisition would likely bombarded the surface of the squats' homeworlds to justify their inactions. The squats with advance technology shielded themselves underground and survived the bombardment. Satisfied the inquisition left the planet and spread that there are no more squats in the imperium. Unbeknownst to them the squats survived and a few thousand years later they "returned".

I've always imagined the Squats to be the race that was responsible for the Taus rapid technological advancement. Just because like, Tau armor / battlesuits kinda look Squatish, in the sense of the shape and colors they use.
Thats just always been my like way of keeping the Squats in the lore haha.
I prefer the Demiourgs and the Squats as separated species. Especially after having so many hours played in Battlefleet Gothic
When you spoke of the Squats possibly representing hope for humanity and the closest things to good guys in the lore, that really hit deep, and feels like something 40k could really benefit from, especially in regards to gaining new fans and gamers.

In regards to squats having the most advanced technology, I'd argue that both the Aeldari and the Necrons have more advanced tech. Especially at their peak. The dark age of technology humanity may sound crazy, but the Aeldari Empire literally completed science.

The squats could have stasis locked their home world's in response to the great contagion. They lived on dead rocks so they just waited until the bugs went away. Good thing that they listened to their stc ai when the invasion began. Lore problem solved. Redbox old 2nd edition space wolves as squats in plastic and then new box release. Yay! Being a GW executive is just that easy ...

I would love to see Squats be the good guy faction. Having something to compare to gives better contrast to the usual horrors than varying shades of grey. That said I expect something akin to the fantasy Warhammer dwarfs.
Honour is everything and any loss of it is dealt harshly. Someone broke a promise to a dwarf? It will be set right even if it takes generations. A dwarf failed apprenticeship? Go take the slayer oath and seek your doom in combat to redeem yourself to the ancestors. The high king has a great book of grudges to keep track of particularly grievous misconduct and some dwarfs have literally angried themselves back to life to settle a grudge.
News at 11, local living ancestor too angry to die, returns to settle 400 year old slight by rival league when insulted about it on his deathbed.
Well, this comparison also invites darker side of the coin - a civilization so invested in honor, social standing, grudges and ancestral ties that it reflects in blood feuds, clan wars and unending strife over -some bullshit- totally important slight from 154 years ago that ultimately hold it back or even cause internal fractures at the worst possible moment, ie. _a wild fleet of tyranids appears!_
Also, a society obsessing over ancestors and, presumably, family trees, is also in danger of ossifying any vertical mobility, limiting it - even in enlightened meritocracy this positive portrayal seems to be implying - to a specific in-group, with outsiders never having a comparable standing due to simple lack of enough shared ancestors. Now imagine introducing a trend that slowly builds on such in-group preference and, equally slowly, pushes civilization towards "a bunch of inbreeding and jealous clans" - slow enough that even people with a squat lifespan can't realize the problem. Ironically, that is something no Chaos god is needed for.

It’s pretty wild that fusion power is considered the “zenith” of technology when we know of more efficient means of energy production today… artificial kiloton black holes and antimatter annihilation are both much more efficient on a mass converted to energy ratio, artificial black holes are hypothesized to retract up to a 50% efficiency of mass converted to energy, where antimatter annihilation is 100% of mass converted to energy, compare these to fusion power where only .7% of mass is converted to energy… the dark age of technology wasn’t very good at making power…
