Recently, there seems to be a trend of books published about bookstores and libraries and cafes and I am here for it! The book has a cozy and comforting atmosphere that makes it a perfect December/Winter read.
Yeongju, a young woman finds herself at a crossroads in life. Burnt out from the relentless demands of her corporate job, marriage, and busy life in Seoul, Yeongju moves to a small residential neighbourhood outside the city, where she opens the Hyunam-dong Bookshop. As she starts to read voraciously, host author events, and develop her own bookselling philosophy, she begins to ease into her new setting. As Yeongju immerses herself in the world of literature, she also encounters a set of very interesting characters, each with their own unique stories to tell.
All these characters enter the bookshop coping with the culture of contractual jobs and gruelling workweeks, competitive college exams and a grind that never seems to end. As their lives weave in and out of the bookshop, they find ways to find passion and meaning in what they do. Meanwhile, the bookstore also evolves alongside its customers, from a simple commercial venture meant for profit, into a cultural hub where ideas are exchanged freely and without judgement.
Surrounded by friends, writers, and the books that connect them all, Yeongju finds her new story as the Bookshop transforms into an inviting space for lost souls to rest, heal, and remember that it's never too late to scrap the plot and start again.
In many ways, the central theme of the book is how we find meaning in our work and cope, even when we don’t find our work meaningful.
