- Edited reaction to Star Trek TOS (1966) - Season 2 - Mirror, Mirror | Canadian Reaction | TV Commentary
We are back this week with some more Star Trek: The Original Series! Today, we are watching MIRROR, MIRROR. This was such a good episode! As a fan of Star Trek: Discovery, I absolutely LOVED this episode! I really enjoyed seeing the parallel Enterprise and the evil Sulu and Spock. It is also important to mention that Uhura was MVP this episode! She not only provided important intel regarding the Enterprise's mission, but she also seduced Sulu AND unharmed a crew member! What would they have done without her? Also, as a woman of colour, seeing her character shine in such a way was awe-inspiring!
I can't wait to hear what you guys have to say about this episode!
The iconic series STAR TREK follows the crew of the starship USS ENTERPRISE as it completes its missions in space in the 23rd century. Captain James T. Kirk - along with half human/half-Vulcan science officer Spock, ship Dr. "Bones" McCoy, Ensign Pavel Chekov, communications officer Lt. Nyota Uhura, helmsman Lt. Hikaru Sulu and chief engineer Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery "Scotty" Scott -- confront strange alien races, friendly and hostile alike, as they explore unknown worlds. (Wikipedia)
This is not a substitute for the original material. In Canada, you can enjoy the tv show on Netflix.

Is anyone else gonna mention that Nichols has some amazing abs? She pulls the Mirror Universe uniform off great. Also this was certainly one of her best performances in the series where she got to stand out and shine. Also props to Sulu for being able to pull off the cunning villain role perfectly.
Kirk's closing speech to Empire's Spock, beyond epic.
Great episode, yes, Uhura rocked in this one, also like the possibility of Spock bringing change to the alternate universe. Great reaction Alexxa! 😊🔥
Uhura MVP Spock with beard
This is probably the all-time best Uhura episode in Star Trek: TOS! We always suspected it, but she is truly a badass here!
Likewise for Sulu--even though this is Mirror Sulu!
The music expands on the Romulan theme, introduced in "Balance of Terror." It also uses themes from "Amok Time" and "The Doomsday Machine" with great effect.
ya know what the ironic part of this episode was for me? near the end when Spock was bringing McCoy back to the transporter room holding his arm saying" i had to delay your beam out until i could arrive" you must return to your universe , i must have my captain back". So in other words had Kirk just told Spock what he wanted to know before the fight in Sick-Bay, Spock would have understood in fact Spock would have understood from the Moment they beamed up to that Parallel Enterprise had Kirk told him. But if that were the case we wouldn't have had a very long episode lol
You know I've seen this episode maybe a dozen times, and I never thought of that aspect of it. Spock would see the logic of having his captain in command. Brilliant analysis.
Notice how the Mirror Captain's chair has a raised back. No doubt, it's also reinforced, probably with some type of armor plating. All the better to protect the Captain from a surprise attack--from behind.
Uhura was one of my first celebrity crushes because of this episode.
I can totally understand that!
The "Star Trek Continues" episode, "Fairest of Them All" continues and resolves the story of "Mirror, Mirror." It is a seamless, "Part-Two," set entirely in the Mirror Universe. Marlena is played by Barbara Luna's daughter and she looks exactly like her mom! Mirror Scotty is played by James Doohan's son. Nothing is spoiled by watching it! It answers all our "what happened next?" questions--and then some!--in this one-off, self-contained sequel that is the equal to the original in every respect! It begins where we left off, in the transporter room of the I.S.S. Enterprise...

Enjoy!
This is the only Star Trek episode with TWO tags! The first is the usual end-of-episode banter between Kirk/Spock/McCoy. The second tag features You Know Who entering the same scene.
Deep Space Nine wonderfully capitalized on the second tag!
2:06 This episode has been lampooned _far_ and wide. _Star Trek_ delves into the concept of the parallel universe over and over again, but the mirror universe (specifically) is a place that has a knack for resembling our own in a _darker,_ more _sinister_ manner.
It seems to be symbolized by the goatee. There was an episode of _South Park_ that had the town make contact with a parallel universe and _everyone_ there had a goatee; even the women. There was an episode of _Stargate: SG-1_ that had the guys at the SGC make contact with a parallel universe and Colonel O'Neill took to referring to the people from the other universe as "the guys with the goatees."
Captain Kirk set the precedent that the captain of the Enterprise must occasionally deliver inspiring speeches to captive audiences. It's part of the job description! Kirk's eventual successor, Jean-Luc Picard, learned his lessons well and continued that tradition for the Next Generation. Watching Star Trek is sometimes like being at church on Sunday.
This episode, establishing the existence of the "multiverse" in Star Trek, is a great narrative tool for telling stories that couldn't be told through the characters normally. It also expands the deep dark secrets held within each of our beloved regulars. I love the "what if" factor of it all. (I love how Discovery really leaned into the Mirror Universe trope and delivered on it big time!)
As many of us don't consider Discovery as canon, it therefore remains irrelevant.
@@stevejoshua9536 Best not to consider Discovery (or SNW) at all. Star Trek in-name-only, with some of the lamest, laziest, unimaginative writing one can imagine.
@@stevejoshua9536 Well, the reactor mentioned having watched it and enjoyed, so I was connecting with her on a series we both enjoyed. The comment wasn't made for you, so your reply is therefore "noncanonical" and irrelevant.
@@film-maniac Your opinion, not mine. The reactor has commented before about having viewed and enjoyed Discovery. (The Mirror Universe played a big role in that, and she was making the connection with this episode.) If you aren't a fan, the comment isn't for you, so keep scrolling.
@@tofersiefken So people have to be fans of wretched shows with horrible writing to say anything here? Smh
This was such a fun episode seeing Uhura having a stronger role in this. And of course the fabulous speech Kirk gave to the mirror universe Spock. Glad you had the chance to see this. Had this series been in current time instead of the 1960s, having the same cast, writers and producers it would have been fun to see this as a longer episode. Loved your reactions
@leroystea8069 And the sequel on STAR TREK CONTINUES episode provides just that...picking up immediately from this episode's ending and concentrating on the mirror characters on their ship after the Mirror Mirror episode.
This episode should have been titled "Uhura's abs."
This is the second series I can recall tackling the tricky "Parallel Universe" theme, the first being Twilight Zone's excellent episode "The Parallel" from 1963.
Also, "Dark Shadows" (circa 1970) explored a parallel universe! The residents of Collinwood stumble onto a bizarre room in a forgotten, long-closed-off, unused section of the sprawling gothic mansion, a room that is uniquely well-kept and well-lighted, where they see THEMSELVES walking about and interacting with each other, but addressing each other by different names. It randomly flashes in and out of our reality, normally appearing in our universe as an old, dark, abandoned room most of the time, but coming to life whenever the other universe spontaneously spills over into ours. Our characters can't enter the room or engage in any way with their doubles because an invisible barrier exists, dividing the timelines, whenever the Time Changing Room materializes before them--they can only helplessly watch these strange dramas unfold, enacted by their otherworldly, parallel twins!
Barnabas Collins enters the room while it is "normal," dark and abandoned, then the other universe suddenly appears around him and he is engulfed by it--trapped in the "Parallel Time!" This presents a challenging problem for Barnabas easily fitting in at the parallel Collinwood; in that other reality, he's supposed to be DEAD.
I realize that it is commonly misdescribed as a goatee, but technically that form of facial hair is called a Van Dyke. A goatee does not include a moustache.
ALEXXA: YES, QUEEN!!!!!!
:) :) :) :) :) !!!!!!!!!
💖💖💖
Enjoyable episode 😃. May I be forward and say you would look as lovely and fashionable in Uhura's outfit. Actually this look was popular in the late 60's. Wish I was 20 then.
Aww thank you 😊
Happy Mother’s Day ! ❤
Great episode! Just remember, alternate universe stories originated here, not in later iterations of Trek! :) Wasn't Uhuru beautiful!
Gorgeous! 😍
"It reminds me of the Terran Empire in Discovery." Well, imagine that...
"Mirror, Mirror" is the Star Trek version of Anthony Hope's two-part story, "The Prisoner of Zenda" and its sequel novel, "Rupert of Hentzau." They are the "Ruritarian Romances:" swashbuckling romantic adventure tales of court intrigue where dastardly, sword and dagger-wielding villains await dashing heroes around every corner. The main character must impersonate his identical twin--the kidnapped king--to survive and defeat the villains. The books are fast-paced and treachery lurks outside every margin.
The Mirror Universe is the Zenda Novels in Outer Space. This is yet another example of Star Trek's debt to classic literature, from Shakespeare to Moby-Dick, to Ruritania! Jerome Bixby must have been a Zenda fan!
Man Spock is terrifying when he's against you. He's strong enough to break your body, and with telepathy he can certainly break your mind.
Also noticed for the first time that Sulu could've escalated that situation with Uhura, but DIDN'T. After all he had a dagger too. It may very well be that in this universe Uhura is known as the better knife-fighter. In fact, his scar may even be from a previous encounter with her!
Yes!!! And like the proverbial moth-to-a-flame, he got burnt once--but can't stay away from her! Well-said!
@@davidgradwell8830 Thank you sir🙂🖖
Kirk: You will find me a formidable enemy.
Mirror Spock: I'm aware of that, Captain. I trust that you are aware of the reverse.
And...
Mirror Spock: Should anything befall me, my operatives will avenge my death.
And some of them...are Vulcans...
Oooo!....The dialogue in this episode is Master's Class level. Textbook scriptwriting. Jerome Bixby was a master, indeed!
There was a similar episode in the Enterprise series and what was cool was that they also made the episode opening sequence was made into a dark version of the normal opening
I love anytime Uhura gets to shine. She was very beautiful and could pull off sass with class. Yes, she had great abs but I also think she had a set of legs that wouldn't quit. Her and Tina Turner! I get so frustrated at the way her character wasn't given more on-screen time over the years. This episode is wonderful to me mostly because Nichelle Nichols got to cut loose and show how good she is as an actress. Later, William Shatner did right by her as did Leonard Nimoy and The director Nicolas Meyer ( in the movies), as they were responsible for the stories in those movies that gave her great lines and some great scenes. But during the TV series she wasn't given the kind of screen time she deserved. I adored her and loved those rare instances, like this episode, that let her shine.
My favourite TOS episode. I see you have already reacted to my next 3 favourites, The Naked Time, The Trouble With Tribbles, and Balance Of Terror. Btw, in the scene near the end in the Transporter Room, it is the only time that Scotty ever calls Jim by that name to his face.
poor Pike
For all we know this Pike may have been the worst of the worst.
Death to evil Pike.
Yes, but then again, remember this is Mirror Pike; potentially a monster in any universe, for all we know.
Imagine that in the Mirror Universe, Pike didn't heroically save a crew of cadets from a fire. He might have even set the fire, massacring them as some sort of reprisal! Instead of being a kind man and a legendary explorer, that version of Pike might have been a ruthless, genocidal conquistador. His Number One was probably assassinated by Kirk, positioning Kirk to then assassinate Pike. We don't actually know anything about him or his crew.
Mirror Spock: Status of mission, Captain?
Kirk looks about, studies Mirror Spock, and takes a pregnant pause.
Kirk: (Very carefully) ...Unchanged...
Kirk is a survivor!!!
The Enterprise and Deep espace Nine also have mirror universe espisodes, and in DS9 you can watch parts off the results the Spock's revolution
You are 100% correct. Good job, picking up on that. This is.
The main mirror universe that you will see thrwithout the entire series.. You'll see it again.
The next generation and deep space 9. And they put it in enterprise. That's why I love Star Trek a bit more than Star Wars because of the consistency throughout the franchise. And yes, this was an Uhura episode.
There was no Mirror Universe episode in the Next Generation Series.
@stevejoshua9536 what about the episode when Worf found himself in it? He and Troi were married and had kids.....?
Yes, other Trek series have tried to do their version of the mirror universe, but all fall far short of this classic episode. Great reaction!
Disagree. Star Trek Enterprise did an incredible 2-episode Mirror- verse, in which the producers even changed the shows opening, as an historical sequential explanation, dedicated to the Mirror-verse only
I enjoyed watching you as you enjoyed watching this episode. Lol

Terrific episode and a family favorite. Wish I could see more episodes of Mirror Spock.
Deep Space Nine has sequel episodes to Mirror Mirror
Yeah, the whole Discovery storyline was a direct continuation (or ripoff or homage, depending on who you ask) of this TOS episode.
MIRROR SPOCK: Yes, of course! The entire landing party. It is time for answers.
Mirror Spock has all the suspects gathered in the same room, and he's ready for answers. This is straight out of Agatha Christie! Hercule Poirot has nothin' of Spock--in any universe!
I've not got around to watching Discovery yet, but i suspect it's the same Mirror Universe. For the record, i love DS9, Picard, TNG, VOY, TOS, Lower Decks, and Enterprise.
There is a book written called ‘The sorrows of empire’ that tells the story of what happened in the mirror universe after Kirk beamed out.
I will look into that!
@@AlexxaReacts
It’s by David Mack
Of course you are correct: this is the episode, back in 1967, in which the Terran Empire was first mentioned. In addition to Discovery, this mirror universe appears in*2* other Trek series. The only thing I dislike about its appearance in Discovery is that, given all the things that happened in Discovery, Kirk should already have known about the mirror universe in this episode. But that’s a minor point, and it’s worth it for those killer performances by Michelle Yeoh and Jason Isaacs.
Actually, the term "Terran" was never used in this TOS episode. The closest I can find anyone using that word was in TOS - Season 3 - "The Enterprise Incident", when spoken by the female Romulan Commander, when she asked Spock about his dual heritage, "With whom does you allegiance lie ?"
@@stevejoshua9536 True.
That IS The Terran Empire from Discovery. Or one of them, since I, for one, consider the Discoverse to be one of the many multiverses. Not only did Nichelle have abs, Nichelle had abs AFTER having had a kid. Kirk's little Kirkian speech at the end, within 80 years gets the entire human race conquered. And enslaved. Oh and if you want to see some Nichelle badassery look for a film called Truck Turner. You will never be able to review it here though...no..not here.
Hey Alexxa 🖖. So you finally got to the Mirror Universe episode. Not my favorites, but have fun exploring! Great to talk to you on Starwars day! 🖖😎🤘🇨🇦🕊️
Thank you so much for joining the livestream! It was fun chatting with you 💛
Another top 10.
I like it because everybody gets to shine and it's not so Kirk-centric.
That said, I do like his squeeze.😍😋😈
View "Deep Space Nine" if you really like: "Mirror,, Mirror".
I will be watching all Star Trek episodes, starting with TOS 😊
In 1993, the _TNG_ giant novel, _Dark Mirror_ was published. It looked into what the mirror universe looked like at the time of _TNG._ It's purely non-canon, though. It's entertaining, but it's purely non-canon. At no point did _TNG_ look in on the mirror universe.
_DS9_ did, though. _DS9_ looked in on it over and over and over again, and I'm not going to give you any more information about that because, well, spoilers and all. 🤷♂
Also, in the 1980-90s DC Comics published their classic Star Trek (and TNG) comics. Set in the movie era, between the events in "The Search for Spock" and "The Voyage Home," they created a serialized story where our heroes had to face down a full-scale invasion from the Mirror Universe. It was quite a wild ride!
@@davidgradwell8830 😳That sounds quite intriguing. I may have to look it up.
@@lazyperfectionist1 The back issues might be a little hard to find in comic book stores. In the meantime, there's a Steve Shives CZcams video, "What actually happened between Star Trek III and Star Trek IV?" which is pretty decent and gives a good recap.
