  • Barbie Movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is without a doubt the biggest hit of this summer! Whether you liked it or not, Greta Gerwig created a film that truly shows the beloved Barbie dolls in a completely different context, challenging the norms and sparking discussion about topics such as feminism, gender roles and what it means to be a person. It seems like everyone has a lot of opinions about this movie, both those who loved it as well as the ones who hated it.

The barbie movie was a masterpiece with some of it’s themes, I especially like the sub-theme of “gender roles are broken and a toxic system, transcend gender and pursue equality to all” I’ve seen very few movies who even dare to touch this theme, let alone put it on a golden pedestal. Most movies just accept the way gender roles are and refuse to change. Others come close by not letting them exist in the movie (which personally I enjoy a lot because it means my mind doesn’t have to fight as much) anyway, barbie did great. And the video was also great.

Kind of on the same topic but I’m really glad how the romance between Barbie and Ken was approached. It was basically non-existent and even actively used to call out how most stories force the Main Guy and the Main Girl into a relationship regardless of whether it makes sense or not. I didn’t mention it in the video but your comment reminded me of that!

I watched the movie just a few hours ago with my mom and I absolutely loved it. I think it balanced the comedy and serious subjects very well, and I think this is definitely a movie that everyone should watch at least once.

Happy to hear that! Do you have a favorite scene or theme from the movie?

@@golden-prism I think one of my favorites was the scene where Barbie, Gloria, and Sasha got all the Barbies and were trying to demolish the patriarchy. It was fun to watch.

Despite being pretty far from the target demographic (An older teen who never had any interest in Barbie dolls as a child) I still agree the message about self identity and expressing your true self made the movie way better than it could’ve been with a less passionate director. However, I do think the movie is a bit heavy handed with its themes with characters being literally told the message of the movie in order to complete their arcs instead of it coming more organically from the story. It was still a pretty fun ride, especially with friends, but often it feels like it’s showing it’s hand so clearly that I could always predict the biggest plot developments and where the characters would be at the end.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! And I think your opinion is very valid, I can definitely understand why for many people the overall message felt like it's being spoon-fed to the viewer. Personally, I didn't mind it that much, I saw it as a sort of stylistic choice, especially since Gerwig definitely knows how to be subtle when she wants to be. For me it felt like she was playing with the genre in a way, like a sort of nod to childhood stories where the moral of the story is always very clear and often explicitly stated. That said, I think it's a valid criticism and I see how many people might find it annoying.

This film really surprised me because I was not excited for this when it was initially announced, dare I say that I was dreading it. But once the officials trailers came out, I got a lot more interested and the early positive made me wanted to watch it. That and the whole Barbenhimmer phenomenon.
The film’s message was also beautiful and really fits well in our modern time especially with women. Also, the film is very colorful and funny. On top of having great performances and songs, especially I’m Just Ken.
Oh and Allan is the GOAT.

As someone way outside of the demographic, the movie was fantastic. The messages were all important ones that people this movie was made for (aka girls and women who grew up with Barbie) definitely need to have seen in media. The comedic bits were all wonderfully done and the whole cast seemed like they had a good time with it.
I think part of the initial draw was that, bc of its marketing, you didn’t know what to expect. Initially, I fully believed it was going to be just a silly romp and wanted to see it from the first time they released images.

I'll be honest, I didn't like this movie. And actually my problem is precisely with the message. And I don't have a problem with the same message, rather with its approach and execution. I think that the message itself in the film is presented too unambiguously, too literal, too elementary to be thought provoking purely and simply because there is no way to interpret it otherwise. Personally, I really don't like movies that straight up tell you what the message is without any subtlety. In this movie, every two minutes there is a moment where you are told instead of shown and left to think for yourself. This is one problem and the other problem, at least for me, is that every male character in the film is a complete caricature. Is it a problem to have such characters who behave like this - of course not. The problem is that literally every man here behaves like a caricature and cannot make competent decisions for himself. Even Ken who supposedly has a development in has towards the end is not allowed to do it himself, someone has to instead come and tell him to do it instead of making up his own mind. Are there such men in real life - YES, obviously there are and they are terrible, but not all of them, but the movie demands absolutely all men as terrible, which annoys me, there must be some ratio . This is to some extent the problem with James Cameron's Avatar films, they are too unambiguous. In other words, this film should have been more subtle and more respectful of people's intelligence.
Otherwise, yes, it was quite entertaining at times and definitely had some visual ideas that were frankly very cool. Maybe it's just not for me, I don't know / please don't attack me under the idea that I'm sexist or something like that, because it's not true. I have a problem with the execution and not with the message itself, which is completely different / .
