  • A 60-year-old Portsmouth man, Derek Croom, is facing felony charges after an altercation with law enforcement in Charles City County earlier this week. A beloved sergeant died shortly after the incident.
Our 8News crew went to Charles City the morning of Friday, June 14. Flowers, wreaths and flags adorned a patrol car that, just five days ago, belonged to the late Charles City County Sergeant Floyd Miles Jr., who had served the community for 16 years.

It would appear that the sargent was very overweight and not in good physical condition which could have caused a heart attack or stroke under stress ! If the man was having a medical emergency any altercation more than likely was not intentional and probably doesn’t warrant a no bail condition ! It is regretable he passed away however the deputies bad health was no doubt a contributing factor and it was not the mans intention to cause death or bodily injury ! Taking vengence on a posible sick person is not going to help the situation !
