Ubuntu: The One Word to Change How You Work, Live and Lead | Shola Richards | TEDxSouthLakeTahoe

  • What if our global mindset was refocused on the transcendent concept of Ubuntu - the African philosophy that represents the power of human connectedness, kindness and compassion? In this vulnerable and thought-provoking talk, Shola Richards addresses that important question, while showing how Ubuntu can be used to transform how we work, live and lead. Some people call me a cheerleader (admittedly, I'm a natural at enthusiasm), but I'm actually a champion of those who value integrity.
Because really, what's more important than the principles we exude...and thus, the principles we spread?

Over the course of his professional career, he has trained literally thousands of exceptional men & women on topics including team cohesion, world-class customer service, transformational leadership, effective communication, and dealing with difficult customers, to name a few. His personal mission is simple: To help more people live and work with more positivity. I found Shola's positivity website in 2016 when I was at a low in my life. I was stuck in a rut, working 40+ hours at a paycheck job. It felt like I was wasting my life, my time and my years. Reading his blog posts made me have a different outlook on life and to realize that life was meant to be lived, positively and happily. Ever since, I have had the pleasure in meeting him in NYC. I read both his books, look forward to his Monday morning emails and absolutely love the messages he gets across. His enthusiasm is so inspiring and I was so excited to hear he was giving a TED talk. TED talks are the best and this one was so awesome! Thank you so much for all the work that you do and continue to do!

This made me imagine some Western-African fusion philosophy...
After all... The only reason you have something to think about is because *we* are, and by being, share something with all others. Thus the stuff of our being entertains our thinking and becomes the media through which we realize our existence. In this sense, perspectives and selves can identify only through a shared reality and therefore a shared truth through interoperability must underline it all. I think therefore I am because we are - cogito ergo sum quod sunt, ngicabanga ngakho-ke nginguye umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu. Cogito ubuntu, I think I am because we are.

Thanks to CBS This Morning i found you! I too was in an abusive work environment. Toward the end the company moved Human Resources to another state. My boss would randomly target me publicly or call me into his office and scream at me. After a month of this and finally in desperation, in the most loving way i could muster, i asked “Is there something going on in your life?” The anger drained from him. His body slumped. Yes there was an issue in his life. We talked a bit heart to heart. Ubuntu. He stopped the abusive behavior

Shola is brilliant. This moving TEDTalk deeply inspired me with his accurate observation that the answer to all that ails others and ourselves is kindness, caring and compassion. Giving and getting. Simple -- but hard. Really, really hard. As Shola accurately says, if we want to change the world, we have to BE the change we so desperately want. We have to deliver kindness, caring and compassion to those in pain to help heal them and ourselves. The world is full of pain and the only solution is respect, inclusion and a desire to help our fellow human beings through that suffering. Ubuntu indeed. And, if not now, when? And, if not us, who? BTW, if Shola runs for President in November I'M VOTING FOR HIM! He is the living embodiment of kindness, caring and compassion. Bravo!

After retirement in 1-1-11; I moved with my beautiful Dominican wife to her house in her country. We are married now for 20 years, 8 years in Antwerp (EU) and 12 years in Santiago de los Caballeros (RD). My wife is sometimes a little bit too enthusiastic "Ubuntu" for family and friends and we have sometimes some month left at the end of my pension. A retired man needs a nice, inexpensive hobby, so at the same time I also changed from Vista to Ubuntu.
However I never regretted, that "Ubuntu" came into our lives, fixing issues is so much more easy :)

“UBUNTU” means “Humanity or TO BE HUMAN”.( UBUNTU is The act of being human)
    “ABANTU” means “HUMANS or PEOPLE”.
