  • The First test between World Champions South Africa and Six Nations Champions Ireland was played in Pretoria yesterday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
    Ranked no 1 and no 2 in the world respectively there was much on the line in this game. South Africa chasing revenge for their loss to Ireland in last years rugby world cup and Ireland wanting to take down the world champions at home.
    In this episode of Inside Rugby with Mark I take a look a what turned out to be an epic battle between the two sides, giving my honest and raw opinion.

    Ohh Mark, us boomers don't understand the booing thing, but it is afterall a sign of respect and maybe we need to embrace it. Yes penalties was concerning on both sides. On that note TMO's slowed all games down, counterproductive to all laws introduced I would say. I think the Boks will have a lot of homework to do this week. Thanks to the Irish for bringing it on for full 80 minutes, you caused a guy scratching on 70 to smoke a full packet of 20's. 😂😂😂.

    Good analysis Mark!! South Africa was the better team, Ireland was well off their normal quality and some really dumb penalties by Porter and Kelleher, and Lowés mistakes were killers. But we have to have less influence from the TMOs, in the disallowed try which would have made the game 13-13 and brought it to a different level of intensity and excitement, the TMO penalizes Ireland for a supposed foot in the ruck but ignores a neck roll by Le Roux, so if calls are not going to be equal stay out of the game. any way the second test will be great, though with all the injuries I don´t give us much of a chance. Rugby is in a good place, respect to all the top teams.
    By the way Mark I, I saw you on a runners coach channel, he was analyzing your form, it´s a small CZcams world, I hope the trail running is going well.

    Ireland handed South Africa 2 free tries. Both from very bad mistakes. I think that stat is amazing because it would make the game 13 - 20 to Irlande. However, that is Test rugby. You cannot make these types of mistakes. The margins are so fine and South Africa rightly took advantage. The sign of a good team. It just makes me believe that Ireland can play badly, yet stay in a game against the world champions and even win it. Nobody would have seen that coming. There is a feeling of the first game against New Zealand all blacks in that three test series where over a 20 minute period, the all blacks ran in a few scores to put the game to bed. Yet, there was a feeling that Irelands mistakes cost them and they didn’t click. I have this same feeling this time. Something may be coming next week..

    I think both Pollard and Crawley missed kicks that would normally go over in their sleep. Pressure!?! The TMO had too much influence with on field decisions. Every single one went against Ireland. If the shoe were on the other foot we know Rassie would be making a new video lol Kelleher had a neck roll…there’s no way he intentionally got that ball back on purpose. The next disallowed try….I could agree with that one not being given as it was hard to see if it was touched down or not. Same with Lowe getting the ball back in play…not enough evidence either way.
    Probably a draw would have ensued …however I feel that would have been a smash and grab rather than a victory. So yes I believe South Africa deserved to win the game…but I have more time accepting if they ought to have due to the TMO interventions. TMOs are ruining the game and turning it into the NFL! Use them for thuggery and deliberate fouls play only. Ref ought to be the ultimate authority. Well done SA and looking fwd to next weekend. We are not the same team without JGP, Hansen and Kennan.

    Fair play to say Mark, respect the kicker. Its always respectful in Ireland and nobody can't say we don't. I think it's very unrespectful to not do so. And even more was to turn a chant that was just in the moment at the world cup into a kind of sluer. Not what Rugby is about that doesn't do the saffas public well. Come on? Don't insult a nation because of a game of rugby. We wouldn't start singing, back to black from Amy Whitehouse.

  • @neilmontgomery3470
    @neilmontgomery3470 Před 9 dny +19

    As an Ireland fan I thought South Africa deserved their win. Ireland were probably on the wrong side of a few decisions but you should be able to win without the officials help. Ireland were probably off their game in the first half as Farrell said in his interview afterwards, which gave the South Africans easy access. However, I am proud of how my team fought back into the game and if a few marginal things had gone differently we could well have won. Positive aspects were how well young Osbourne went at fullback. He is definitely a viable back up for Hugo Keenan and in fact adds some of his own attributes to the role. However, the main positive was how well Doris went. He has had a number of MOTM performances but this was different. He announced himself as Ireland's captain for the foreseeable future. I think Ireland will take a lot out of this game and I think they will be better next week. I think O Mahony has played his last game for Ireland.

    • @insiderugbywithmark
      @insiderugbywithmark  Před 9 dny +4

      Neil, thanks so much for the comment. I think the Boks first try put Ireland a little on the back foot, it was a quick start. It took time for Ireland to build into the game.
      I continue to be impressed with Osbornes evolution and I mention him in every video I make about Ireland. He will just keep getting better IMHO.
      I love the way Doris plays the game, he is a born leader, brute, powerhouse and he definitely had one of his best games on Saturday.
      Thanks for your views on OMahoney, I agree.

      @Dreyno Před 9 dny +3

      I wouldn’t call disallowing Lowe’s try “marginal”. They missed at least two offences from SA and invented one for Ireland to disallow it. Never seen any quite as bad except the Mike Phillips “try” years ago.

    Nice commentary Mark. As an Irish fan I was on the edge of my seat for most of the match, with my SA neighbour sitting alongside me. We’re are still friends 🤣 When SA got that very early Try was concerned that they might steam roll away but they didn’t.
    Thought Jamie Osborne settled into 15 jersey really well, Craig Casey had the best game I’ve seen from him, such a shame he went off that way. Caelan Doris was an amazing warrior, so was JVDF. 3 TMOs went against us which I thought was v harsh, but that’s how rugby can go.
    Loved how we never gave up, if you listen to the full version of “Ireland’s Call” in the last verse it says, “we will fight until we can fight no more” makes me so very proud.

    Great game despite the result. Looks like Casey and Sheehan will be out next week. Thought Kelliher was fouled with a neck roll for the Lowe try, Doris got the ball down and the ball hit Lowe's leg so he was out. Didn't get the rub of the green on this occasion but they were all marginal calls and a toss of a coin. yea sad but health first needs to be stood down it was a fair tackle RJ came through and nailed him clean the ground is so hard that anyone hitting that is going to feel it. Over all fair result Boks deserved the W as an Irish fan I thought some of the calls and interference by the TMO was headscratching but bad calls on both teams. Only thing that was really bad was the DJ in the Stadium he played sound clips on Irelands kicker after he missed "emotional damage" yet not on Pollards misses and during the Casey incident when medics and players were worried, on both sides may I add, the DJ started to play music to slag off casey all in all not a good look. My MOTM had to be PSDT with Dorris a close second both were heads above all but PSDT just seems to get better with every game never less than a 9/10 he's some machine.

    There was very little in the game bomb squad scored a great try, but when they came on they lost a penalty in the scrum and Ireland scored 4 tries two were disallowed on another day they would be given and this could have been very different. The Conor Murray try was a piece of magic 3 forwards and one back cut SA defence to pieces. SA just deserved to win I think it will be as competitive next Saturday hopefully the result changes…😂🍀

    Hi Mark, as an avid Bok supporter I'm glad we've negotiated the first real hurdle after the WC and the welcome green shoots apparent of a new, hopefully improved game strategy I'm even more convinced Rassie should take the plunge and reinvigorate the squad.
    For the 2nd test I hope to see even more bold selections...
    Start Feinberg-Ngomozulu with Willie on the bench with Faf and Kolbe for a traditional 5:3 split while in the fwd's bring in Roos at eight with Marx and Wilco Louw starting...
    The bench shuffle must be: Tom du Toit, Groblaar, Koch RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith...
    Louw demolished the Leinster pack singlehandedly while Malherbe was a shade of his normal self so gets dropped for a wake-up while du Toit was spectacular in the Prem for Bath.
    The Boks MUST dominate the Irish pack from the get-go to draw in Doris an van der Fleur, they kept the Irish in the game last time around....
    Williams will add genuine pace for an expansive game and Moodie will add his own special magic and keep Crowley guessing with the safety net of Willie, Faf and Cheslin there to pull the chestnuts out the fire if needed...
    From my lips to Rassies ears...

      @schalkspies8189 Hola Bok Supporter, thank you for sharing your views. I like those a lot. Here's the thing, you are so blessed with talent, you could select two teams that could do the job, so Rassies focus must be on building depth and experience through until RWC 2027. I suspect we will see various combinations tried, and Sasha should be one of them. Only a few days to go and we will see what he decides to do, with a win in the bag he may be inspired to change things up.

      @@DavidSmith-yi8oumust agree with you apart from Marx I thought our defence suffered. Mostert and Etsebeth subbed too early in such a tight game. Wouldn't have taken off Faff. His cover defense is immense. Williams may provide speed but his tackling not up to Faffs. Snyman must decide if he is a tight forward or a ballerina. And the wrong lock got picked from Stormers. Dickson was the revelation during URC. Kwagga should not be fielding kick offs. Rather PS Du Toit or Mostert. We have two of the most dangerous and opportunistic wings in world rugby. Dont see room for Moodie. ( not in their class) Edwil vd Merwe showed that he can do the job of Arendse and also super in defence. They both lack height as with Colby but it's the timing of the jump that's the key. Somehow these guys always seem to win the ball in the sir against taller opponents. Le Roux alrhough often criticized also had a superb game taking high balls. Happy with our backline. Like Kriel but one occasion we had a 3 on one overlap and he should have passed but he ran into strong Irish defense.
      I will say one thing about this test. I never saw such huge consequences from errors and the swings made an enormous difference to the final outcome. Ireland as a team can be 10 or 14 points behind but u know they can score two tries in the last 10min of a game. Glad we had the bounce of the ball to win and that scrum penalty was apt revenge for the final minutes our RWC pool clash v Ireland.

    Have to say I disagree about Synman, it’s late and he’s keeps driving him right into the ground in front of the ref. Clearly it was worth a look and Doris had to ask and was told off for asking. SA get a pen and score controversial try, which pictures show he was in touch.

    You're right. Booing the opposition's kicker is disrespectful. I can't speak for the other countries, but South African rugby fans disrespected the Irish due to the Irish fans' lack of respect towards the Springboks. Respect engenders respect and the same goes for disrespect.
