The TRP family has been reintroduced for 2024 after a conspicuous absence. Here we are gonna discuss its origins with the FBI Hostage Rescue Team or HRT for short. From it’s quiet origins to some stunning successes and then to some of the dismal failures that rock the foundations of trust in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Originally conceived as a preemptive answer to a repeat of the Munich Olympics Massacre for the Los Angeles Olympics the HRT was to be a well trained and equipped collection of the best talent the Bureau could muster. The HRT under the command of Agent Danny Coulson would deploy to many standoffs and hostage situations and would achieve excellent results. Agent Colson would move to a staff position at the Bureau and the incoming leadership would lack his finesse and integrity. After Colson’s HRT peacefully ended the Cuban Riots at the state penitentiary in Atlanta Georgia, they would again secure the peaceful surrender of the The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord compound in Pontiac Missouri. But once Colson would go onto other career opportunities, the HRT would take part in the disastrous siege at Ruby Ridge when US Marshals had already murdered Samuel Weaver and his dog. HRT Sniper Lon Horiuchi “Sniper” would miss a shot at 200 yards on Randy Weaver and then try to make another shot on the retreating family and while only wounding his intended target, and his bullet would then find the face of Vicki Weaver while she held her infant. Horiuchi would never face justice for this murder. Again the HRT would find itself mismanaged and improperly applied at the Siege of the Mount Carmel compound near Waco Texas. The body count left in the ATF and FBI was staggering. Both of these tragedies are well documented, but Make sure to watch the videos done by Windigoon for probably the best break down on both Ruby Ridge and Waco Texas.
Request for Proposal or RFP 6990 would lay the groundwork for the next FBI Swat and HRT side arm. Submissions from Kimber, Colt, Cylinder and Slide, Springfield Armory and Bill Wilson of Wilson Combat and Springfield one the contract. The accepted model would have Novak sights and hold a group of 1.5 inches at 25 Yards with Remington Golden Saber hollow points.
The commercial variant would have several name changes before the Tactical Response Pistol or TRP family would be reintroduced for 2024 ready for operators to savor with their excellent refinement and capability. Our example shoots very well and has some of the best accuracy we have ever seen from a handgun. The pistol has matured over the years with features like accessory rails, ledged tritium night sights and G10 grip scales.
The new TRP lineup for 24 has more choices than before. 5 inch guns can be had in a railed and unrailed version that all come with the magwell from the factory. The 4.25 inch Commander length pistols are all railed, and have a bobbed mainspring housing that Springfield calls the Carry Contour. All options can be had in either black or flat dark earth cerakote. The FDE version we had cleaned up easily and the cerakote showed very little wear after more than 700 rounds.
