    I always find it funny that in the beginning of the series, they introduce the Grandline as something "no one has ever returned from" which is quite hard to believe, when you look at all the pirates from the east blue who made it to the Grandline or even the monarchs going to the reverie

It's dumb to say that it's a plot hole or inconsistency that Sanji would not know (or couldn't have forgotten) a minor detail about something he read about years ago that he didn't believe was real. If anything, the inconsistency is that Sanji was probably in earshot of Krieg when Krieg talked about Luffy's weakness to water, and Sanji probably should've noticed that Luffy was doing whatever he could to stay out of the water during his fight with Krieg, and at least should've realized that Luffy can't swim. I don't think an incorrect statement from a character can be considered a plot hole simply because characters in a work of fiction shouldn't be expected to have perfect knowledge of the world. Whether it was Oda's goal to deliver information to the viewer via that character is irrelevant, a character being wrong isn't a plot hole. For this same reason, Jinbei calling Katakuri's devil fruit by a bizarre classification doesn't present a plot hole either, as devil fruit knowledge in the context of the one piece universe isn't perfect either. Paramecia is ill-defined anyway and seems to be a catch all for devil fruits that don't fit nicely into the more strict definitions of Zoan and Logia.

    So, my theory with CP9 had always been that they were kept as a force that was -supposed- to think they were the best of the best, but were actually just the biggest fish in the pond they were allowed in. Yu Yu Hakisho had a similar thing with a group of spirt hunters or whatever that didn't know anything above A class demons existed. It meant that anything A class in below they could handle easily, and were very successful because they they "knew" they were the best, and because knowing how much stronger some things out there were would just demoralize them. Similarly CP9 was only allowed to operate in paradise, and thus what they could do was sufficient to handle anyone there.
    Similarly I had always thought that the 6 paths were actually just incomplete Haki. The iron body thing is armament Haki, the finger pistol thing is armament Haki on a single finger, the dodging thing was observation Haki. The speed thing was... well, literally just people being fast, so that's in the same vein, and the air jumping was just a particular application of going very fast. Don't remember the last one, and I admit I don't know how Rob's energy blast thing might fit in exactly, but I had always taken it as an introduction to Haki by people who didn't realize that Haki was an actual thing, and were only able to master a limited form of it.
    TL:DR - CP9 was intentionally kept in the dark about the true extent of Haki while being taught limited forms of it.

His reputation, and now growing disdain for the Emperors made him the perfect fit for him to be a Warlord.
      His competence at Marineford isn't too hard to believe either imo. Luffy wasn't all that much stronger and that point since Alabasta, (remember Croc won 2/3) and he was holding his own too. Oda hardly reveals anything until it becomes relevant to the crew. The suspense and mystery keeps the story interesting and the intrigue/reactions from the characters are more relatable.
    It's also important to note just how effective the world government is at controlling the spread and quality of information. The world is heavily divided physically, and the government regulates the few safe ways to travel. They are literally capable of turning events, people, and entire islands to mere legends or rumors at most.
    It's safe to say, to keep people weak is the best way to keep them in control. It would surprise nobody if they attempted to monopolize the teaching and training of haki. It would be very hard for someone with no knowledge of it, to effectively train and improve it at any half-decent rate. With that logic, it would naturally be the pirates, a force of anarchy that apposes restrictions of the government, and freely travels and learn about the world from a less filtered perspective, to be the one's that grow in strength and knowledge of the world. Pirates by nature haven't real purpose to share anything either. They're pirates, after all. You can't really blame a self reliant crew of outlaws for keeping their secrets as well as their treasures.
    It also makes a lot more sense as to why haki is more prevalent in civilizations like the sky islands or wano, perhaps an attribute to/from going by different names.

    Since there is no confirmation of the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia’s contents or of how much Sanji has read and remembered about the Encyclopedia, it’s still possible for him not knowing or recalling the Fruits’ weakness and other informations until Luffy’s arrival to the Baratie. There was a gap of 11 years between the time when Sanji read the book to when Zeff told Sanji of Luffy’s weakness to water: it was seen him having the Encyclopedia in his possession was when he was 8 years old in chapter 840, and when Zeff told Sanji about the Devil Fruit users’ weakness was when he was 19 in chapter 66; in chapter 832, Reiju has stated that she hasn't seen her little brother for 13 years, confirming the 11 years gap. In chapter 464, Sanji has mentioned that he wasn’t interested in the Encyclopedia and didn’t seem the fruits as real when he was a kid, that might have been a factor for him to not recalling the informations he had read as a child due to his lack of attentiveness with the book’s contents, since the only Devil Fruit that he was able to identify was the fruit that he has shown interest in it: the Suke Suke no Mi; he should have be able to at least identified some other fruits throughout the beginning of his journey to Thriller Bark, like Luffy’s fruit because that one is on the book but that didn’t happened. Sanji was also confused during the situation with the invisible man in chapter 444, he couldn’t recognize that it was caused by the Suke Suke no Mi until chapter 464, then making it possible for him not recalling or knowing the consequences of consuming Devil Fruit and other informations related to the Encyclopedia due to his lack of interest; and even in things that he was interested. And in the SBS vol. 45, Oda mentioned the existence of the Devil Fruits Encyclopedia but mentioned that only few of those fruits can be identified by shape: the Gomu Gomu no Mi being one of the fews, and there were fruits like the ones Kalifa and Kaku ate that can be only identified by consuming it; which can imply that the informations provided by the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia is incomplete.

    Katakuri’s Devil Fruit having multiple characteristics of a Paramecia: altering the body user, altering the environment, and generating substances; isn’t an inconsistency since there are Standard Paramecia user who have more than one characteristics and there isn’t confirmation that Paramecia users can’t have more than one of those characteristics. It would have been a plot hole if it’s stated that Paramecia users can’t have multiple of those characteristics, but that wasn’t the case. Beside Katakuri, there are also other Devil Fruit users that have various characteristics, such as: Wapol having the ability to change his body and creating new things by consuming it, like how he made a steel named “Wapometal” or combining his subordinates; Doflamingo being able to create strings, and transform non-living things in his surroundings into strings; Bonney can make herself younger and older, also being able to change other people’s ages; or Smoothie allowing her to drain liquid from living and non-living things, then she can make herself bigger and stronger from absorbing those liquids. Which makes the argument inconsistent since it’s proven that there are standard Paramecia users who have more than one characteristic, and because there is no confirmation that standard users are only restricted from just one. And based on the One Piece Wiki, the reason why Katakuri’s Mochi Mochi no mi is considered a “special” Paramecia isn’t because of having multiple characteristics, but instead it’s due to him being able to turn his body into mochi, like any other Logia user due to the retcon that has.
    What Pell said about the 5 flying Devil Fruits in chapter 169 will depends on the method of flying which Pell might be referring to, if he was referring to Devil Fruits in general that provides directly or indirectly the ability to fly, then that will be an inconsistency, although if he was referring to zoan devil fruits that allows to fly in the traditional method such as himself, then his argument is still considered as consistent since currently there are 5 confirmed zoan users who can fly: Pell (hawk), Bian (bee), Kabu (beetle), King (pteranodon), and Marco (phoenix). It was stated by Morgans himself that he can’t fly in chapter 872, and it was mentioned in the SBS from volume 93 and chapter 997 that Kaido doesn't fly in the traditional way but instead walks through the air by creating Flame Clouds.

    Before the time skip, there was various moments that demonstrated or mentioned the various usages of Haki, having the term of Haki (覇気) being first introduced in the Japanese version of the manga in chapter 234, when Kurohige discovered Luffy's bounty and before the Straw Hats arrived to Skypiea. Conqueror Haki was shown: during the meeting between Shanks and Shirohige in chapter 434, Luffy stopping Motobaro in chapter 495, Rayleigh knocking out people in chapter 500 and 503, Luffy using it to stop Sandersonia from injuring Marguerite in chapter 519, Luffy knocking out the wolves in chapter 536, or Luffy stopping the executioners from killing Ace in chapter 569.
    (edited)
    Observation Haki was shown: when Zoro dodged the stones falling into him because he knew where the pieces wouldn’t going to fall, and exactly knew where his sword was located under the pile of rocks in chapter 195; Satori predicting Sanji's attack in chapter 246, Mantra is explained and Enel mentioned Shura's defeat in chapter 257, Aisa hearing people's voices disappearing in chapter 264, Aisa using Mantra in chapter 265, Enel heard that Raki said in chapter 270, Ohm heard one voice disappearing in chapter 271, Enel sensing someone in the edge of the island in chapter 272, Aisa telling to Luffy about hearing two voices in the island in chapter 277, Eneru predicting Luffy's attacks in chapter 280, Sandersonia knowing where Luffy was going to attack in chapter 519, or Koby being able to listen the voices of people disappearing in his head in chapter 579. On different occasions, Zoro has mentioned that he can sense Sandai Kitetsu’s curse: one of those occasions being when knew that Chopper was carrying one of his sword in chapter 363, and he was able to sense it since the first time he was it in chapter 97. And if the Kami-e (Rokushiki) has some implementation with Observation Haki, then it can be considered as the various usages of Haki before the time skip.
    (edited)
    And Armament Haki was shown: probably when Lucci used the Rukuogan, a technique that resemble the advanced Haki, in chapter 425; Garp punches Luffy in the head in chapter 431, Rayleigh destroying the collar that was in Camie with advanced Haki in chapter 504, Sentomaru stopping Luffy’s Gatling Gun with advanced Haki in chapter 511, Rayleigh stopping Kizaru’s attack in chapter 511, the Kuja putting haki in their arrows in chapter 515 and 516, Marigold using her tail to effectively damage Luffy in chapter 519, Hancock kicked Smoker in chapter 559, or the 3 Admirals blocking Shirohige’s shockwave with advanced Haki in chapter 564. And if Tekkai and Rukougan (Rokushiki techniques) has some implementation with Armament Haki in it, then it also can be considered as the various usages of Haki before the time skip, such as: Blueno using Tekkai to block Luffy's attack in chapter 348, Blueno blocking many Luffy's attacks in chapters 383 and 387, Blueno attacking with Tekkai to Luffy in chapter 385, Fukurou blocking Franky's attack in chapter 402 and 404, Kumadori blocking Chopper's attacks in chapters 406, 407, and 408; Jabra blocking Sanji's attack and attackin him with Tekkai in chapters 414 and 415, Kaku using Tekkai to turn into a cube and blocking attacks in chapters 416 and 417, or Lucci using Rokuogan to Luffy in chapters 425, 426, and 427.
    Crocodile isn’t confirmed to have Haki and it seems like possessing Haki isn’t a requirement to become Warlord of the Sea, as it was demonstrated with the other members with no confirmation of having Haki: Kuma, Moria, and Buggy. Not all the places have Haki as something extraordinarily important, an example will be the entire saga of East Blue, it didn’t have that much of relevancy until in Grand Line: when Zoro used it against Mr.1 and in Skypiea with the Mantra. Something similar thing happened with the Devil Fruits, initially it was treated as not a common thing and a big deal when someone had the ability of a Devil Fruit until the arrival to the Grand Line: like how Alvida’s crews said that Luffy is not a human in chapter 2, Morgan saying that Luffy wasn’t an ordinary human in chapter 6, Nami calling the stories about the Devil Fruits as a myth in chapter 11, Mohji surprised that Luffy has a Devil Fruit in chapter 13, Kuro’s pirates being impressed about Luffy’s powers in chapter 35, same thing happened in Baratie in chapter 52, or Sanji not knowing that Devil Fruit users can’t swim in chapter 66.
    In the Vive Card Databook has mention that “the training required for the acquisition of both mantra and rokushiki is akin to that used for acquiring haki”, following by demonstrating a panel from chapter 418 of Lucci using Tekkai to block Franky’s Strong Hammer, which might imply that the Rokushiki techniques are related with Haki based on how some of the techniques has some resembles with the types of Haki: Tekkai with Armament Haki for similar offensive and defensive usages, Kami-e with Observation Haki with both of those techniques used to dodge attacks, and Rokuogan with advanced Armament Haki that creates a shockwave to cause internal damage; and since it has mentions about the training to obtain the Rokushiki techniques are the same as the one to obtain Haki, which means that the agents of CP9 have been instructed on the art of Haki.

Sanji would most likely skip directly to the entries and look at the cool fruits, then eventually find and read up on only the invisibility fruit which wouldn't have the general weaknesses of the devil fruit since it's already been stated earlier in the book.

    About Haki and CP-9, there's actually a lot of discussion if their techniques aren't actually derived from haki use.
    The ones where they harden their body to resist attacks or use their fingers to pierce it could have come from armament training, while the one where they evade attacks like a paper sheet could be observation. Luccy's special attack where he impacts Luffy without touching him could even be the special armament we're seeing now in Wano. Specially because Luffy shouldn't feel pain from an impact based attack, unless it had haki on it.
    But yeah, I do agree that haki should have been more prominent, specially with Crocodile. And it's not as if Luffy wouldn't have beat them if they've used haki, OP's fights are not a matter of "who has bigger haki wins".

    @alessandropianese6127 Před 3 lety +50

    Oda explained cp9 not having haki: they have been undercover at waterseven since adolescence, that's why they have just been taught with rokushiki. That said, there are other hints to haki previous Raleigh's explanation: Zoro cutting mr One at Alabasta is an example of an unconscious form of haki, something made believable by the fact that when Blackbeard meets Rufy at Impel Down he tells him that "his haki has grown" even if Rufy didn't know explicitly about Haki yet. So, we can say that Oda kind of prepared haki's ground well. Even other usual arguments about haki's inconsistency doesen't work: Shanks losing his arm is the most iconic. About that, Oda never wanted Shanks to lose his arm in the first chapter, it was forced by the editors that thought it was a weak first chapter without a dramatic scene. Another argument is Ace not being able to hit Akainu. This has been explained recently with the second level of observation haki, Katakuri's one: Akainu was predicting Ace's shots just like Katakuri has done with Rufy's ones, he just get his body immaterial where those shots where going to land. That's why Ace is surprised when he doesn't hit him, not because he doesen't know you must use haki to hit a logia (he is a logia himself after all). About Crocodile, it's not that wierd that he doesen't posses haki: if you think qbout it, haki is mostly possesed by pirates that are under an emperor, or by marines. That's because those are the siyuation where you get usually taught how to use it. Crocodile was a lone pirate going after the new world powers. It's not that wierd that he didn't learn about haki since his losses against whitebeard'pirates. But after that he just somehow discovered about ancestral weapons and focused on them. If you think about it, previously strong characters without haki that gets their ass kicked in the new world are not rare. Moria is another one. Even a supernova like Bege, which was under big mom, being under her for just a while didn't get to learn it. Like Moria and Crocodile he arrived where he is whit just is fruit. Like I said, those which uses Haki are usually related to marines or emperors (or are incredibly strong themselves) : jimbe learned haki probably under big mom, and doflamingo has been trained, in his childhood, by Vergo, which was an high grade marine. So yeah, I think that haki isn't that inconsistent. A big prove of that is that Oda showed us second level haki since Marineford : second level observation haki when akainu avoid Ace's attacks and when he, aokigi and kizare sense the arrival of whitebeard's ship. And second level armour haki when those three block whitebeard attack creating a barrier posing their hands in front of their bodies.

      @lotusanime8477 Před 3 lety +1

      I'd also argue that there are levels of armored haki, maybe some lower forms that don't coat the weapon black.
      I always find it irritating that Enel used pure Gold as a Weapon (!) against Zoro's named Swords & Near Haki Cutting Techniques (iirc it has been kinda confirmed that him being able to cut iron is a level of haki).
      "The Warlord has to know about haki" is bs imo simply because of Buggi. Dude won't have haki, too much of a joke character^^
      Also, Crocodile was mainly on the entrance of the GrandLine. More inconsistent here would be, that Ivankov knows "Croco's Past". If those two have a history, it is then that I kinda agree with it being inconsistent him not knowing about Haki. Or it is redundant to talk about since he is canonically weakened by any amount of water^^'
      With Haki being the Embodiment of Will and the running theme in One Piece being "inherited Will", I'd say it was planned at the start to show that Will can be transformed into a literal Power, for that I refer to Baratie Arc with Redfoot Jeff talking about how Luffy's "Spear of Guts" / "Spear of Will" was stronger than Don Kriegs Arsenal of Toys, before Luffy beat Krieg.

    i think for sanji, he probably never saw another devil fruit user until fluffy. it's like reading about titration and how the solution suddenly turns clear, then doing the experiment and being surprised by the solution being clear

      I'm reading Whole Cake right now and you're correct. Just read that chapter an hour ago! He even says it aloud to that government chick just to make the peril of the falling tower more understandable.

    I feel with the sanji thing is just tunnel vision, all he cared about invisibility lol

    i will say tbh sanji only says “curse”. doesn’t explicitly state he knows each DF has the same curse IE not being able to swim. perhaps he thought the specific curse for this fruit was you couldn’t swim and other fruits have different curses. but in all honesty that’s just not the case it’s just an i consistency lol
