I am polio disabled in a similar way so can explain what is going on. The fault is not with the polio man or the helper but with the chair. It is a classic Swedish design and is about the worst possible chair to get out of because it is low, the arm rests are very low and it swivels. This is all the exact opposite of the ideal chair which is high, stable and has good arm rests to push up from. To get up using this method you see him first locking his left knee. He has got full calipers also called KAFO leg braces on both legs which lock the legs straight. Then you turn your upper body to face the chair, grab the armrests and drag the other leg across and then push this back by thrusting it up in the air to pull the leg vertical and lock the caliper. The low chair and low armrest mean the height he can get here is not enough and you can see his right leg is jammed under his left and he can't complete this phase let alone the thrusting to straighten the leg and lock it. After that it rapidly goes completely wrong as the chair rotates. He will have been able to get up off the floor with his crutches without help as getting up after falls is something we all have lots of practice of. Even when successful it looks odd to those who are unfamiliar because for the middle phase you are thrusting your behind into the air whilst doubled over holding the chair. Some people often those who are shorter are able to rise forward where you just lock the legs and use the chair to hoist yourself up. we all pick the method we find best depending on the chair.

yes I tried, the brace doesn't work for the crippled left leg. I prefer crutches as I can walk faster. I am sure people looking for me felt it's so bad but at this time, it's hard to fix and I walk faster on crutches.
when I do my mile walk at the marina everyday, I can see the eyes of the people walking wanting to carry me LOL, they know I have no way to stop in that area but to finish the one mile walk which takes me about 28 minutes. LOL
in my opinion i think the helper should held the disabled as soon as he turned to get up and pull him up as soon as he got steady for more support and being held up from the waist and steadily moving upwards would have been easier
This *is* staged, isn't it?? The braced guy would know how to rise, stand and lock his braces without ending up on the floor, and how to instruct the other guy to help him effectively.
No way that this is staged. I have a brace just built for me 2 years ago and I have a hard time wearing it. This guy already passed away and I am sure at that time, his brace was not as sophisticated as compared today.

It takes me 28 minutes to walk in one mile for my daily mile walk. Using my brace, just in my kitchen took me an hour to walk with braces using canes. It is so ridiculous so I stopped using it, as it is not of use for me. Of course for some, it is very useful for them.
