Something very underrated about this format is how well you and your coach feel each other, the Brain has to think differently than usual. The Brain player doesn't suggest the piece that makes the best move always, if you deem the move unfindable for your Hand player, or if the risk they make a wrong move instead is too big to take. That doesn't take any credit away from Lud, because he still has to execute what Hess is cooking, but it's something worth appreciating. Hess wasn't the strongest Brain in the tournament, Ludwig wasn't the strongest Hand in the tournament, but they sure as hell were the strongest Hand and Brain in the tournament.

It'd be cool but unfortunately it won't work as well, the highest rated "non-chess" streamers will have a huge advantage. The brain has more say on the strategy, for example if the brain says a piece there's at most two pieces to move. A duo with a low rated brain like XQC and hikaru will do really bad because X will make very obvious unavoidable blunders.

this is like my 6th full watch of this video, Lud is just so damn good at commentary. feels like i’m watching an anime, especially with the music
I also accidentally won a chess tournament once. I was acting too aggressively and got my queen and a bishop in a REALLY bad position, essentially guaranteeing my loss, but then I was like "well, if I can't win, I may as well just delay the inevitable and put him in check at the cost of my queen". I moved my queen to take his pawn, then started to say "cheeeccccck..." before realizing that he couldn't take the queen because my bishop was in the same diagonal, and his rook couldn't take my queen because he castled, so it was on the other side of the king. I continued "...mate?", and that's how I turned a certain second place into a first XD

This tournament was straight out of the anime. Ludwig fought against almost all of his greatest chess rivals (we are only missing Charlie) and beat them because of the power of friendship.
This also proves how genius the H&B format is imo. Ludwig isn't the sharpest hand around and Hess isn't the best brain, but u can tell they work really well together. And part of H&B chess is to complete each other. Awesome to see them clutch this!

I honestly hope this vid gets Hess some more clout from CZcams frogs. Lud was spot on when he said Hess is the sweetest human ever. Even if you don’t like/know chess his streams are worth putting on while doing HW or some other activity bc of how positive and wholesome they are. Also he’s the king of dry humor which is why him and Lud work so well together.

Hess is such a beast, finding an opening trap of the opponent and it actually works and also, you need good chemestry to pull this off, like he had to find the best move that ludwig would see, that's an insane challenge, and they pulled it off

I am the most invested when Ludwig plays chess even though I am terrible at it. I'm always on the edge of my seat praying for a win, and we got this big win with Hess

@@MrYounis26 Nobody said 2 v 1. As someone stronger than Andrea, I believe I am well aware of the difference between myself and NL. The issue is that QT is much weaker. NL+Lud can play some good chess but overall QT is highly likely to mess it up and Andrea won't know how to play to her strengths and weaknesses.

Hand and brain is way more difficult than it looks. I (a lowly 1400) played hand in a tourney and the grandmaster I was teamed with gave me all kinds of weird positional moves I had no hope of figuring out. Nothing is more stressful in that situation than some GM being like 'pawn', and you're looking at the board with no idea what he wants while time is ticking down, and an audience staring. Props to all these guys for making it work.
Hess really seemed to know how to help you, you seemed to know what he meant, that was truly fucking awesome.
