  • 4000 Vorhies Road is a 16,000-square-foot home featuring four bedrooms, seven full bathrooms and three half baths on 16 acres. Listed at $10 million by Renee DeKroub of RE/MAX Platinum, it’s MLive’s House of the Week. Homes from across the state are featured each Wednesday.
The home, built in 1994 by architect W. Keith Owen, was inspired by Wright’s Prairie style and the famous architect’s affinity for blending his work with surrounding nature. All but one of the home’s above-grade rooms feature panoramic South-facing views of the natural lake on the property, and a lake-fed spring feeds a creek that surrounds the building on two sides. Interior stained glass decorations and wood furniture further borrow from Wright’s designs.

Wow, everybody has to live somewhere. Just a note to you jealous types out there, maybe this fella built a lot of cars or houses or just created employment for thousands or engineered a new widget that made millions lives more comfortable. We all gotta serve somebody and this home represents a lot of service to a lot of somebodys. $10 million ain't what it used to be.

I think this building is ugly. If money was no object and I wanted to make this building as beautiful as possible on the inside and outside, I'd try to give it an aesthetic almost entirely between Tuscan and medieval Nordic, with Baroque accents, and with no visual escape from detail.
