    Ironically, according to the mythology, most of the Olympians (especially Zeus) were TERRIFIED of the underworld, mainly because the only god that could leave without Hades's direct permission was Hermes. Zeus refused to go there at all costs, mainly because he had previously swindled Hades from being ruler, convincing Hades and Poseidon to choose who would rule through a game of chance (Picking Sticks) instead of through age-oriented Birthright (in which Zeus would rule the seas, Poseidon would gain the Underworld and Hades would take over the skies).
    The concept of "Flyte", however, is basically a rap battle in its earliest form--an intellectual debate that had to be spoken in rhyme with a crowd of spectators acting as their judge.

  • @bonnecherie
    @bonnecherie Před 2 lety +13

    This one tickles my interest mostly since it's got Norse mythology and I happen to be a heathen (follower of the Norse pantheon).
    Thor did not crossdress because of a woman. He crossdressed because Mjolnir (his hammer) had been stolen and the giant king, Thrym, demanded Freya before he would hand it back. Loki convinced Thor to crossdress as Freya and attend 'her' marriage to Thrym. When they got to the giant's hall, the giant noticed 'her' red eyes and appetite and Loki dismissed them as sleeplessness and being anxious about the upcoming nuptials. When Mjolnir was brought out finally, Thor seized it and slew every giant in the hall.
    Valhalla is actually where warriors who are chosen by the valkyrie go when they die in battle. Everyone else goes to Helheimr (which is ironically not that bad if you read beyond the hell part of the name unless you were níðingr [honorless]).
    Flyting is actually an art form, basically Norse rap battles (which is apropos considering the video XD). The "Loki must have written your lines" part is actually a compliment considering that Loki was FAMOUS for flyting and actually verbally slayed the other gods in the Lokisenna.
    Ngl, this is one of the best rap battles in the whole of ERB and I'm glad you covered it!

    The giants stole Thor's hammer (Mjolnir) and the only way to get the hammer back was if Freya married the giant. Thor crossdressed (not very well) to pretend to be Freya at the wedding, got his hammer back and killed the giant.

    I certainly enjoy all of your content MrLoyd. I often find your knowledge of all things very vast and informative. That being said might i suggest the breaks in the videos to explain things a little further spaced, they seem to be getting shorter and shorter. Your brain works so fast you are explaining everything line by line before we get a chance to think of the meaning ourselves lol.

    Love your overall knowledge about everything (been watching all your reaction to these battles)!
    Just correcting some here for people who want's to know the story "facts" correctly.
    1. Medusa was one of the 3 gorgon sisters. The mixed human-animals are called chimeras (the same time in the stories Chimera was also a specific creature combination of lion-goat-snake). So technically Medusa was a chimera too but in the battle they refer to gorgons as the three sisters.
    2. Chronos didn't make a difference between a rock or flesh due the fact that he swallowed his kids whole. That was also the reason why Zeus got his siblings out of him whole and grown up (no idea how they survived or ate in there though).

    So in ancient Greece when someone died they would put two drachma on the eyes of the deceased so they could pay the ferryman to take them down the river Styx to the afterlife. Your deeds in life determined which part of Hades you would spend eternity in. I cant remember the names of the realms though.

    The line "You're history, I'll be the first to put it in writing" refers to the Greeks (more specifically, Herodotus) technically inventing history (as we know it). What he invented is more accurately called historiography, it gave us the subject of history as we learn it today which is more than just a bunch of separate letters, journal entries, and chronicles.

    Chronos was a Titan and ate the children by swallowing them whole. The stone was completely wrapped in swaddling cloth when swallowed and his haste prevented him from checking. As to the rescue the 2 most popular stories are that Zues came back many years later in disguise and gave his father a drink with a bitter herb in it that caused him to spit up Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, and the last I can't remember after which they overthrew the Titans, the other story is that after he swallowed the rock he fell asleep from the heavy meal and baby Zues cut open the stomach of Chronos releasing his siblings.

    @styxmadis Před rokem +1

    Just a thought. Is it possible the bar from Thor of "I'll drop you like Greece's GDP" could also be him calling Zues 'morally bankrupt'?
    Greece went bankrupt as a nation (I think I remember hearing about that)
    'Morally Bankrupt' meaning violating ones own core moral values, which does describe Zues.

  • @Koda89

    I am so glad to find a reactor who actually appreciated the Greece’s GDP diss, let alone to the point where it instantly won the battle for Thor. I’ve seen so many reactions to this battle and that absolutely brutal line either flies over the reactor’s head or they at best are bemused by it.

    According to the mythology, Thor's mother is the primordial giantess who *is* the Earth. I forget what the Norse called her, but the Greeks called her Gaia, Zeus's GRANDMOTHER. Which would make Thor Zeus's uncle.

    Great reaction, the mythological breakdown is on point. But the cross-dressing thing was a slight inaccuracy: The giants stole Thor's hammer, and Loki arranged a swap for the giant-king to marry an asgardian woman in exchange for giving the hammer back. Thor doesn't negotiate with terrorists, so he dressed up as a woman to be wed to the giant-king and fled with the hammer while the wedding party was drunk.

  • @ncamon

    The "Thunder down under, nailing Natalie Portman," bit is a reference to Chris Hemsworth (the thunder down under), the actor who plays Thor in the marvel movies being Australian. In those movies, his character is romantically involved with Natalie Portman's character. As far as I can figure, that's the entirety of the reference.
