- Getting into the bright areas of building a model railway. The stand out points when seeing layout for me at times are the lights, join us as we look at options for a model railway and watch as we delve into fitting them to the layout. We are getting closer and closer to running some trains on the layout.

I do love the idea of the interiors being pictures you see through the windows. It lookscreally effective. I know Scalescenes do full interiors, wallpaper, carpets etc that you just print out. Cant wait to see it working and the lighting really does add that extra something.

It's great to see you've made another video. Im also using your layout as a basis to a layout. Its been a long time. I am changing to 00 as i previously did N gauge, and that's been sat in the loft space for over 23 years.😊
Nice video Tris, worth the wait. Nice to see a video on lighting which has many different variations. Often the odd channel will install a yard lamp or fuelling point light, but nice to see the different varieties of lighting available to help with making a personal choice.
I like the interiors you did, they look nice.

Nice walk through on the thoughts and installation of lighting. Looks good. I have found that painting bright white LED’s with clear orange works well for me to give an incandescent look.

Nice to see another video on the shunting layout. The addition of lights, people and backgrounds inside the building is a great effect.
I purchased a couple of 3v / 12v power distribution boards from a certain Chinese website - 24 output ports on each unit and selectable for either 12 or 3v for the unit, power supply taken from my DCC controller. for the 6v LEDs I used a 6v power supply from the same supplier connected to a chocolate block for connecting the LEDs. Made using the low voltage LEDs very easy.
The flickering fire looks good, but it needs a chimney..😊
12:23 LEDS will absorb 0.6V approx each of the supply voltage, so if tailed together in series (one after the other) you have to add up these 0.6V to allow you to find what's REMAINING of the supply voltage-left-for-the-resistor-to-deal-with.
Choosing the resistor value is a process of deciding how much current you want the leds to have (= brightness) and dividing the voltage-left-for-the-resistor-to-deal-with by that current Ohms=Volts/Amps.
This will result in a lower value resistor then the one attached to just one LED - so you then have to source it . . .
If you accidentally connect your LEDs without a resistor then the very low internal resistance of the battery is all that's limiting current to a safe level for the LEDs - which it can't do because it's too small, so the LEDS burn out.
It's simpler to connect them all in parallel and leave the resistors one to a LED. This also means that if ( prototypically ) a LED doesn't work, that doesn't affect the others . . .
Also putting in series means you have to connect the output of one LED to the input of the next - which is counter intuitive because the insulation colours are different.
It's good that you kept this in because it's so easy to burn out LEDs, so you will have helped at least a few others avoid this in the future.
Your lights look great anyway, so good result in the end . . .
I use Tamiya clear paint colours on LED`s that need toning down, Or a bit of kapton tape works to
The lighting sets the scene nicely Tris as do the building interior back drops.
As for loosing your mojo, I think that happens to us all from time to time good to see your keeping going.

I’ve been getting “ shunting layout withdrawal symptoms” so delighted you are back on the project! This is my blueprint for my first layout, and the short vids are perfect to follow and give confidence to those of us new to the hobby. Great video Tris!

I also made interiors for some of my buildings, I couldn't find exactly what I wanted so I made use of AI to generate the images I needed. This turned out to be quite the discovery of the pros and cons of the tool. I needed a flat interior for above a shop. I specifically did not want any windows, even if I said do not add windows the AI on several sites still insisted on adding them. the shop below looked fantastic though 😀

The lighting and interiors really draws me into the scene. Love it
To make overly bright LEDs seem a more natural colour simply place a piece of masking tape over it. It diffuses the light and makes it a warmer colour.

A mixture of colour temperatures. You need the lower end of the Kelvin scale. Somewhere around 2500-3000K.

Good to see this layout back on the channel, Tris, and especially good to see it lit up! You may have gathered that I'm in the "lighting is good" camp. Although I might reconsider that after seeing your struggles this episode...!
Incidentally, I don't know if you have any Tamiya Clear Yellow/Orange knocking about but that works well for me on LEDs.

Hi Tris just a thought you could use an Arduino nano with a PCA9685 board to control the lens this would make them disable.
