Wow! I thought planting Shiitake was quite easy, much easier than other mushrooms you plant. I usually go to craigslist to find some free logs, many people give out their tree logs free after they cut down their trees. I only get white oats, red oats, and Maples, they are the best choice for Shiitake. You can get Shiitake plugs online, it is cheap, 100 plugs less than $20. After I got the tree logs, I drilled holes in the logs and hammer the plugs in the logs, sealed them with bee wax, and pile the logs up in a shady cool area in my yard. when fall and spring comes, after a big rain I will get a lot of Shiitakes, they continue to come every year, and the log near them even if I didn't innoculate them also start to grow Shiitake. They are zero-maintenance mushrooms.
Thanks for sharing, Ann. This is nature. Wild things need to be taken care by the wild, but often to be cultivated. I also inoculated some logs recently. No video yet, because no results. Right now I can see the mycelium growth around the inoculation point (I didn't use plugs. Rather I used grain spawn to fill a deep cut by a chain saw). But I'm afraid if it can survive the TX summer. Will see. Do you have a clue? Thanks again.
