- Learn how to remove a white background or make it transparent in Illustrator CC in this simple tutorial.
The beauty of vectorizing and then expanding a flat PNG or JPG in Adobe Illustrator, is that it allows you to make changes to the individual components of the image.
In this simple tutorial, we'll use a simple process involving:
- Image trace
- Direct selection
Now, you can bring flat artwork to life and do far more with it, by removing its white background.

Always loved this simple little trick. Hope it helps you!
I did it but the lines around the illustrator got raggedy or jagged, no longer fine. Edit: I don't know if it was better, but it worked for me in Photshop using properties remove background. However, of course, it's PNG, not AI anymore, unfortunately.
So helpful! I appreciate how quickly you cut to the chase, make things super clear, concise, and simple. Thank you!

Great tutorial
Thank you! Very helpful. I remove background (png file) then image trace. I would like to change from solid line to stroke line. What steps should I do in Illustrators?
In the image trace panel click the advanced options, then under the create option check 'strokes' instead of 'fills'
This is great! Saved me lots of time!

woww....... thanks man
Thanks very much.
I am trying to convert my files from photoshop into illustrator and for some reason they do not appear layered at all. When I try to use this method it removes any effects I had on my ps design and gives it a more vectored look. By any chance is there a way to remove the background from images like that without illustrator changing any of the effects of your design?
Good video. Thank you for sharing this video.❤️❤️❤️
You are the goat thank you for clutching up for my uni assignment
Best of luck fella with the assignment. I remember those days, up on Photoshop at 4am hours before the deadline!

I'm a newbie in illustrator. one of the key step, you said, box space. what is box space when you remove the white background?
i have a logo that have white text and black background but when i delete the white text, it just reveals the black background and not become transparent
Super Helpful! Thank you
You're very welcome, glad it was helpful!
Love you bro
Glad it helped you out fella!
i love it
Cheers Roger
Nice tutorial
Appreciate the comment, thank you
Thank you very much bro
Any time fella!
you say use direct select and then 'backspace' but I am on a mac.... so what do I press to remove the white?
Press the delete key, top right often underneath the power button
@@designwithdale When I do this it deletes the entire image. How do I only delete the white?
@@erinbrenner6897 Object > Expand and Object > Expand Appearance
Is this the same process when you have a PDF? If so, I must be missing a step because I am not able to simply cut out a shape from a PDF. Nothing else is on it. And there is no option to expand appearance. When I follow the steps, there is a path created on the shape but no ability to move each individual piece now or delete
Rasterize the PDF first by using the selection tool to select everything then go to Object > Rasterize - from there, you'll have a flattened image that you can go forward and image trace, complete the other steps etc
Failing that, save the PDF as a JPG/PNG via Photoshop or Illustrator, then File > Place in that image instead - these methods should sort you out, let me know how you get on (hard to know sometimes as there's so many versions of Illustrator and not all of them do the same things)
Do we have to vectorize the image first before we can remove the background?
You do, yes. If this doesn't work for you, try instead in Photoshop. I have a video for it: czcams.com/video/Jqpsm3pOhn0/video.html
It won’t let me choose Expand from my object menu. I have the object selected, any idea on why that might be the case?
I got it. I needed to do Object > Expand Appearance and then do Object > Expand
Leaving this in case anyone else runs into the same problem
thanks bro 🥰
You're very welcome!
What do you do if it doesnt come out clear as the original with parts missing and warped
Try in Photoshop - I've got a video for it: czcams.com/video/Jqpsm3pOhn0/video.html
Thanks my friend
You are very welcome!
After I have deleted all the background how can I move the image without just moving small parts of it? (Sorry if I have followed a step wrong)
Highlight everything with the selection tool and group it together using right click > group or cmd/ctrl + g - that should work. You could also use the pathfinder to merge the segements together, but that may mess up colour selections and other things, so proceed with caution.
@@designwithdale thank you!!!
Hello, my image is already a vector therefore did not need to trace. However the expand option is not available for me, it is greyed out. Any tips please?
It's already expanded. Go in with direct selection tool and you should be able to select the white background
I did everything step by step just like you explain it but it does not work for me.Whenever I select image trace then expand it ,It just does not look like the original quality,it makes it look like a drawing ,any tips for that?
same
Can you please tell is this work for any background or just white colour background.kindly guide.thanks 😊
As long as the background is a simple solid color this technique will work the same. It can also work with a more complex background, however, you will then need to spend more time removing specific shapes and areas.
thank you , i did it in 30 sec
Love to hear this Mike, I always try to keep things simple and to the point
Wow
