In today's Adobe Illustrator tutorial I'm going to show you how to create a custom typography design. Usually text styles like this would be lettered by hand, but in this tutorial I'll share some secrets on how you can still create cool looking typography by customising ready-made fonts with clever OpenType features. The tutorial will then continue with some customisation of the type to add shadows, offset accents and highlights to create a bright and colourful text effect.

Loved learning how to do something with such an amazing result! For those who couldn't keep up - take it step by step - split screen between CZcams and Illustrator. Worked for me like a charm.
The trick with the brush ellipse made my day, thank you so much! The rest is very interesting, I use the appearence tool to make those effects and it also works wonderful, though it is a bit more difficult to understand and takes a bit of patience to get the trick.

Great video... I'm a novice at this aspect of design and was able to follow your instructions to the tee. I'm glad that I'm solid with Photoshop, because following your quick movements was much easier, whereas it would be much harder for someone without my knowledge of adobe products. I did however find that the curvature tool was easier for me than the pen tool when adding the cyan highlights. Again, solid vid mate.
That was fantastic. Great shortcuts that streamline a very manual method that I've employed for years.

I tried this today with the lobster 1.3 font and had a little trouble with some steps like the brush at the end and the blend with specified steps but I got it. I will definitely try it again with different fonts this was fun to do thank you.

University tutors are far different from Freelancers on youtube, these guys have more experience cos they work with so many Companies so they have a pretty awesome ways of working around the style of teaching cos they deal with it every single day
While most people have commented that you went too fast, I disagree. Granted, I have been using Illustrator for years (lots and lots of years) so I wasn't looking for a beginner tutorial. So, the pace was perfect. Nothing is more painful than wanting to pick up a couple quick tips and have someone drone on and on about what the pen tool is, and having to sit through 10 minutes of video for a 15 second trick. Nice job overall!

This guy means business! I think he talks clearly, so speed isn't the issue. I'm pausing on every step to follow his instructions :) USA invited the unnecessary narratives on tv-episodes to extend the content.

HI Chris, awesome tutorial.
I am a proper noob following this step by step on illustrator and everything goes south at 3:30 - 'Give the originals a white fill to make them visible again, against the black offset.' I click white fill and EVERYTHING turns white leaving only the thin blue lines used by Illustrator (showing the typography).
I don't understand why the offset is not black. I've completed ALL previous steps. Can you help?
i had the same problem but how i got it to work is you shift select the text so that each point is visible rather than highlight them. I hope that made sense.
Sorry. Didn't make sense to this super-new-noob. Had the same problem as Ando san. Partly because all of my text is connected, so I didn't have the option to do all of the steps the author does (ungrouping isn't an option for me, so I don't have to do shift select).

it may be better to just understand whats needed to be applied, then arrange it yourself. I figured it out

Its a video. There is a pause, playback, and more. Just be glad it wasn't a VHS tape. :D
one suggestion, your talking and doing speed too much fast, this videos as a tutorial, so I suggest speed should slow so that it's easy to capture every step that you doing.
You can reduce the playback speed bottom right of the video window.

I'm liking how you zip through the tutorial without the normal fill talk. Just right to the point where it's very easy to stop the video, mimic the action, and move to the next action without having to scrub through nonsense talk.

Initially I drew them by hand with the pen tool, but it was difficult to keep them consistent widths, then I thought 'why not use a custom brush?!'
