      Oh, we've got a real champion for West Papua's independence here! But hold your horses, folks, because there's more to this story. Let's talk about the economic lifeline Indonesia provides to Papua. Without that support, it's like cutting off the Wi-Fi in a Netflix marathon-game over. And let's not forget the political circus that comes with independence. No plan? That's like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded. And guess what? All those strides in social development? Yeah, they could vanish quicker than ice cream on a hot day. Plus, let's talk international relations. Going solo could turn Indonesia into a diplomatic battleground. So, while they're shouting "Free West Papua," maybe they should take a long, hard look at the fine print of that freedom. so yea good luck with that ✊

    Here's what ordinary Indonesian perception is like:
    1. The Dutch promised Indonesian government to give all the land of the former Dutch East Indies to Indonesia in I believe round table conference? (CMIIW). Dutch recognize Indonesian Independence in 1949, creating "United States of Indonesia" which include Republic of Indonesia, States of Indonesia, East Sumatera, Pasundan, etc (which already considered dividing the countries & meddling in other nation domestic affairs) & promised to talk about the rest land (western new guinea) the later year, a year after the transfer of sovereignty. Heck we event agree to pay ƒ4.5 billion settlements to the dutch (but I dont get what for? we're in the minus even before the independence, and they're the one colonizing us?). But up to 1960 there's no talk about the rest of the land and instead the dutch promised the papuans its own independence. No talks, then Indonesia sent armies in Trikora Operation (3 komando rakyat, people's 3 commands; 1. prevent papua become dutch's puppet state, 2. fly the bicolor in the west new guinea, 3. prepare the mobilisation to west new guinea). Then the US with new york agreement and yada yada, the rest is history.
    2. About 1022 people who turns up in the ballot vote I think it's because papuans noken system which all the tribe members will agree to whichever/whoever the head of tribe vote. This one giving Indonesian government a headache even to this day, because the local and national election turnup can goes to 100% even when the one that come to vote can be counted by hand; and the election result can have 100% victory. Indonesian government tries to get rid this tradition but to the last election there's still vast area still practicing it. Indonesian government even passed the law to prevent people in the areas that already abandoned noken system to go back using it.
    note: Noken is a traditional Papuan bag that has become a symbol of being Papuan and is also recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012 (note on the word “intangible” instead of tangible, since noken is deemed to have various social and spiritual meanings).
    3. No, Papuan independence army isn't a single unified group even after 2014. Benny Wenda published demands back in 2022/2023 from vanuatu but objected by several papuan independence groups especially the one in the island. Some even say the one that fled the island isn't true "warrior". Some Indonesian people even hope there's truly united papuan independence group like the Aceh one (GAM / Free Aceh Movement) so it'll be easy to talk peacefully.

    • @FredoRockwell
      @FredoRockwell  Před 5 měsíci +2

      The argument that the people of West Papua WANTED to have a tiny proportion of voters cast public votes instead of a referendum is specious. The problem was not that only a few people showed up to the poll. The problem with the vote was that it was not the one person, one vote, secret ballot Indonesia had agreed to hold.
      I also think it's very slippery to describe all of colonial Indonesia as a single people. The only unifying factors were that this bar territory was contiguous and all colonizers by Indonesia. I understand the post was consensus later determined colonies should achieve independence as a undivided unit, but in Indonesia's case this just means replacing colonizers from the Netherlands with colonizers from Java.

      I agree - it's a particularly cool flag and would look great side by side with the rest of the world's flags at big international events. Regarding unification with PNG, as far as I'm aware - no. West Papua is one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse places on the planet (as is PNG) so the case for unification isn't as obvious as it might seem at first. The ULMWP currently has observer status at the Melanesian Spear Group, the regional international organization, and gets substantial support from Vanuatu. I suspect an independent West Papua would be a natural ally of PNG - but I suspect a state merger is unlikely.

      Thanks for your comment. I address this point in the video. There's a case to be made in international law today that all of the Dutch East Indies should pursue national determination as a unit, but this would rely on precedents that were not yet set at the time. Also, Indonesia would still retain the right to let any of it's territory achieve self-determination if it chose (a right all counties have). Indonesia freely exercised this right with the New York Agreement, which it signed at the UN. It's not legitimate to freely enter into an agreement and then unilaterally change the terms afterwards. Regarding border changes, they are difficult, but not uncommon. The UN itself contains over 30 members with borders that have changed significantly since 1991.

    Not correct. Thank You Fredo, you've done better than most; but there was more manipulation than the public has been told. The 'New York Agreement' was first proposed in May 1959, and Indonesia agreed in March 1961 that it wanted such an agreement, although they did not want the public to know it is a trusteeship agreement.
    West Papua is a victim of OUR governments, on 21st September 1962 our governments voted to give the new UN Secretary General U Thant permission to invade West Papua and appoint Indonesia as the current administrator. Our governments were using article 85 part 1 of the UN Charter to authorise this; article 85 part 2 requires that the Secretary General tell the UN Trusteeship Council about the trusteeship agreement ('New York Agreement') so that the Council can then begin its article 87 & 88 duties making yearly UN reports to protect & promote independence of the colony (West Papua). In violation of the UN Charter, U Thant never told the Trusteeship Council; and nor have any of the subsequent Secretary Generals. António Guterres is in violation of international law that requires he reveals the UN annexation of West Papua to the UN Trusteeship Council; irrespective of whoever the UN has appointed as "administrator".
