Thanks man, going deer hunting for the first time in a couple weeks, trying to learn as much as I can before I go out.
Organic Globe how’d it go?
Critty Cothran it’s was awesome, just spooked a couple though, but learn a lot., Can’t wait to go again this season.
Organic Globe yep just takes some time and you can never learn too much from other people and we’ve all spooked deer but you just take it and learn from it so next time you’ll be more equipped
To think, my first buck was somewhere between middle age and mature. I wish I could show pictures but his neck was huge. Easily over 200 lbs total and a rack score of 168 something. It took me and my oldest brother BOTH to drag him out of the bush. (no quad available) My dad said he's NEVER seen such a big buck in his life! Awesome video. Very informative.
Thanks, Keith. This helped me a lot. I'm glad that I will be able to take this with me out in the field and know better how old a buck really is.
I once saw a monster 12 point buck. Couldn't stop shaking long enough to take the shot.
Been there done that! My ranch boss asked me why didn't I take the shot on that monster he and I saw in the stand together 2018. I wanted him to shoot so I could just keep classing him, he was huge, beautiful, amazing, and I could take make hands off the binoculars long enough to shoulder my rifle.
I know it as "buck fever"
GoGit'r best part of hunting for me is seeing all the deer. When you that big boy in! Wow.
I have been watching an older doe and her smell seems very advanced. She has a younger deer that followers her and one time gave a bark sound when she either spotted me or smelled me. It was quite exciting to see and hear. The younger doe is always behind her have you ever seen anything like this before?
Great summary of what to look for! In my observations of WT I identified two features you might expand on in another video. Younger deer have more of a bottlenose snout, mature deer have blockier heads akin to Labrador Retrievers and a toupee.
Thanks for the video! I’m a new hunter just starting and had no clue how to age them.
“Help you learn more accurately how to determine the age of a live deer” zooms out to deer skull lol
Simply put Keith!! Thanks for this valuable information!!
Good advice. I spend time with deer daily and have all the different ages close by, but for really mature bucks because they have been driven off by mature does in the area.
You cut it in half and count the rings. Everyone knows that.
@Frank Stevens he was joking...
LOL
Not a tree
Haha
Very helpful lesson. Could not have beem explained better in a video
Thanks for this video. Helpful. Saw eight deer this morning and didn’t feel right taking any of them. Glad I waited.
Amazing advise, thanks.
It’s so cool to to have a place I can see all tree phases I’d a deer life as defined by you
I hope every hunter has the chance at some point
This helped I am trying to figure out a good way to determine if certain deer make good meat deer. By this estimate the last one I got was about 100 pounds but around 2-3 years. I am aiming for something with a little more meat on them though and a button I seen a few days ago looked almost as tall as the 5 point buck I got. This is a lot easier to determine than going off antlers.
Big thing I tend to look at as well is the hips, older deer always seem to have more defined hips because once that belly drops a bit those hip bones start to become more pronounced and defined and more noticeable then that of a young buck, same can also be said for does
Good tip, thanks!
And their butts are slightly bigger than front shoulder
Thanks for the information, I love your shows
Thanks for watching!
Very good description. Thank you sir.
That was great explained I did not know that, looking up more video Keith Warren thank you..
Make sure and subscribe to our channel.
Good info. Thanks Keith. I have recently been recruited to help manage the herd on a good ranch here in Texas. I have been culling but I can now do so with more confidence. Thank you sir
Good stuff. Thanks for the video.
Very informative, I've worked as a Deer Aging Biologist for the Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation at Deer Check Stations. All hunters were required to check their Deer after harvesting. We would extact the lower jaw and determine the age by dental formula and by wear. Of course that doesn't help a hunter in the field when the deer is in the scope.
Thanks for this! Where we hunt the deer never seem to reach maturity. We see some 5-7 pointers, but if we let them go, they will be dead by next hunting season. Rules in the hunt lease are "two on one side, 3 points total" as a minimum; and there is dog hunting in the lease too. I sure would like to hunt some mature deer, but those leases are REALLY expensive, unfortunately.
Keith, how does a hunter most accurately field score a buck on the fly, now that they know how to age the buck ? ? ? Thanks for the video, great content as always......
extremely helpful thank you
Thank you for this information. Very helpful. Very interesting. I am a sculptor, not a hunter.
I just ask them for their ID
34 and new to hunting. Thanks for the education
I would have liked nevertheless to have had some indication as to when a deer starts to grow antlers that have many points. The video is yet very instructive. Thank you.
Good job Keith.
Thank you for the information loved it this will improve my hunt
VERY helpful
very use ful information
When you see a 2 1/2 year old with 10 points you know you’re hunting a high fence ranch.
Depending on the size of the ranch, myself I dont like game ranches, I've had a few nice 2.5yo 10 pointers on our low fence ranch.
@@user-ib1jy3ub1i are they naturally fed or do they get feed all year round?
@@ryana3679 I only feed them corn and blocks about 2 months before season until a month or so after. No protein feed by my part anyway, im not saying they are 'Giant' 10 pointers. The ones I've let go of course were around maybe 13in inside spread and g2s were about 7-9in. Ive been managing the ranch for about 25 years, that probably has a lot to do with it. Only family or close friends get to hunt but you are right on some of those game ranches they have Ridiculously Big deer. The game ranches have taken the fun of family get togethers/education of our children on hunting "survival" and turned it into all about $$
Antichrist I completely understand. You’ve got a big enough spread that you’re able to manage the deer and harvest what you want. I’m a lil different up here in Ontario Canada. Have a small farm to hunt and a couple other spots to hunt. That being said some years the monsters will be in the area and sometime they won’t. Last winter was a hard winter on the deer and we had a ton of winter kill that
sadly killed a bunch of large bucks that were too preoccupied with the ruts to eat much and had lil to no fat on them heading into the harshest weather.
La Grunta
Good video sir thanks
I hunt state land in south eastern Michigan I have ran across a few mature bucks in my time something always happens to where i have not harvested the larger ones examples my daughter being there and wanted to commentary for her go pro while a 180 class buck is 15 yards away lol. but I did take a doe that DNR aged to be 13 1/2 years old and the amazing part about this story besides living that long on heavily hunted state land was the tracking. She ran a total of 150 yards with a well placed shot but when she got out of sight she ran and then back stepped on her blood trail 20 yards and leaped to the right so her trail of blood would miss lead me but as I taught my 11 year old daughter you owe it to the animal to find it no matter how long you have to look 3 hours later recovered. The meat was not to bad i was expecting tough and maybe a little gamey, but was just as tasty as my usual 4 to 5 1/2 yr old bucks very dark meat tho. Thank you for the tips and shoot str8.
Information starts at 2:19
omg thank you
This video helped me a lot thanks
Absolutely agree!
This video was more regarding the age of whitetail "bucks," than does. The length of the snout and legs are a tell tale sign for does.
Good stuff.
I'm glad I separate them at 2 1/2, and 4 1/2, and older. I think these are good markers.
@kevin. What about the deer horn dose that tell the age of it??
I look at the horns and the say damn what a cow horn then smack 300 win mag to the aorta pump..then inspect the fat on the tenderloin, the hardest decision any seasoned hunter will face is do i use garlic or do i not use it this time.. good luck to my fellow hunters this season..
Keith what about does, there is a lot on bucks but how can you age does? when is a good age to take them?
The information is the same for bucks and does just pay attention to the body development. Once you take a good look at enough deers it becomes very easu to determine basic ages. As a hunter we should all use good management and only take mature animals.
Keith very good video I have 4 bucks in 250 inch class a1 close to 300 inch life-size all of these are over 5 years old my problem on my property is low fence as soon as they jump fence my neibor shoots them so we need more hunters that let the 2..3..4..yesr olds grow up I guess I'm going to high fence since in never use Pope and young love your videos I just built a 50 cal for My ar15 really like it going to do a video soon...
So how old was the European mount when harvested?
Young deer are skinny and “pretty”. Older deer have some wear and tear on them.
2 and a half to 3 year old deer, I'm talking about the rack and skull you was holding.
yes
How do you tell a management buck
Does this apply to doe as well?
I now know out of the many deer I've encountered in the woods the very first one ever was a mature buck and I couldnt stop shaking long enough to draw back on him ...only mature buck Ive ever seen
A hunter normally never forgets seeing their first truly mature buck. It is a rare sight for sure
Keith Warren I saw all four of my first mature deer this past deer season here in Texas. They we're all between 40-190 yards away. 1st was 40 yards away walking toward me just b4 dark as I Was scouting, two weeks b4 rifle season. I had my bow but forgot the broadheads! 2nd one was also 40 yards away as I was helping my ranch owner load his 7 pointer, that joker got up from bedding in a open field right by our camp. I had put my rifle in the truck to help him load. 3rd and 4th were 190 yards off, He was so old Keith his coat was black, huge rack, and He turned broadside and looked like a dang stallion! We called him, He looked up at us and darted into a Field with 20 does and three bucks (heavy rut). We have chase got within 400 yards, ranch boss shot and missed because He thought I said "shoot "! I didn't say shoot I said "ooh it's two" They were two bruisers about to lock horns and give me a dream scenario of either my dad and I or a really good friend taking out two bucks at the same time. Well he missed 3 Times at that huge buck and we never saw him on our property the rest of the season. I didnt get not one deer last year but I got 8 hogs so not too bad I guess.
Great video. Thank you.
Question...
I have a buddy who also looks at a buck's snout. He is convinced that an older buck has more of a rounded and more weathered nose.
Any veracity to that idea?
Thanks again!
This is also true, if you rewind in the video and take a look at the hound middle aged buck their snouts are more straight, they don’t really “droop” or “round”. The face on the more mature buck does however
This is more true for older deer in the 8 year old range
I always go by the spread and levelness of the beams, more horizontal and less vertical.
4:19 The age of the deer is on the hoof? Who knew? Wow!!!
Im new to hunting and i got a duel doe in heat call and idk how to best use it can someone give me advice and hunting tips
If you're hunting public land I wouldn't use it unless you're trying to stop a deer because everybody else hunting there is using them as well and it can be like a warning call to the deer like hey I'm over here hunting you lol.
Some tips would be hunt the sign rubs, scrapes, trails, but steer clear of bedding areas because deer will leave the area if they smell foreign odor or see you in their bedroom. Carry toilet paper with you for 2 reasons 1 obvious lol 2 while you're tracking a wounded animal leave some on a branch where you find blood and it will be like a beacon if you lose the blood trail. Hunt safe comrade
Can I send you a picture of one of the Buck's I'm watching
Old enough to invite home for supper
I think the 2x4 rule is the simplest way to determine a bucks age. Imagine you put a 2x4 under the deer in the middle and two guys tried to lift him off the ground. If he doesn’t tip forward he isn’t mature. Pretty simple. To me the hard thing is determining score on the hoof. A ton of outfitters charge pretty significant penalties for shooting deer under a certain score. Usually 140 or so. Where I live 120 inch buck is huge so it’s hard for me to let 130-140 inch deer walk to begin with. I really can’t determine 20 inches of antler from 30 yards away. I wish someone could come up with a quick way to score a deer on the fly.
Chest crest breast bone is usually prominent in older dear it sticks out
What is a good management deer? Is that something the manager will determine or what you will determine
Arkansas Outdoorsmen What exactly do you mean? Like one yo manage population? any species in your area but just try and take an older deer so the young ones can grow up. Whitetail in lots of places are very overpopulated so try hunting them possibly.
Look for traits that are undesirable and try to eliminate that from the gene pool
my science teacher used this video as an a video to help us determine deer age
So how old was that deer? I'm guessing 6.
I don't normally have time to sit there and stare at the deer for long, have to make quick decision regarding shoot or not, usually let the bucks walk unless they are really something special and worth shooting.
What determines how many points a buck has? Is it age,the older the more points?
Genetics and diet. Age too, but genetics and diet are more important.
Should I shoot a middle class deer (doe or buck?)
I'm new to hunting deer so this helps me out a lot
Glad it helped out
It's amazing how a Buck that young can have antlers that big, unless that is a Doe with antlers? Which is very very rare, but it does happen. I have a beautiful shoulder mount of a Whitetail Buck, he's not very big but he has to be older than that thin young Buck they showed. His antlers are small all together a 5 point Buck, but he's bulky enough to be a Buck.
Do they taste any different if so which is the best tasting?
claw247 Sometimes older deer are less tender. It's really in how you cook it.
Keith Warren I know it's wrong but I once heard of somone killing yerlins for better meat?
Does a white-tailed deer ever grow into a great stag?
So... do you shoot the older deer or not?
Yep! Let the em grow if there're young
3
So basically just the size of the body gotcha
You forgot post-mature 7 1/2+
Love to see thisbguy hubt the Adirondacks and see how many 2and halfs he passes up let alone 3 years old
What about how the deer acts
Cal Steffes I made a video on a whitetail's senses. Check it out on the Whitetail Tips 101 playlist.
Deer activity normally does not change with age. It changes with experiences.
As different as a dog from a wolf.
You can also tell by the color and length of there nose
If he’s a mature buck he’s gotta have the dad bod
2 1/2 years old
If its old enough to crawl its in the right position they say
is there any real reason for determining a deer's age? i used to just want a legal deer and i'd punch my tag on it. then, when you finally get a nice buck, i wouldn't settle for anything less than a 4 point. and now, after really learning the deer, their habitat and movements, i am able to locate great bucks. and from those, i choose a rack i really like, and that's the deer i try to harvest. i will go skunked for the season trying to get THAT guy in my crosshairs. so now, i am always playing tag with a particular deer for the season, and sometimes several seasons. but never in my life would i be choosing a deer because of it's age. if that were the case, i would never kill a mature deer and would always be taking a tasty, tender wee one.
Being able to age deer on the hoof will help you manage by taking the right deer. Just because it's brown doesn't mean it should be down.
Hunt for the table. Not the wall
@@HighRoadHunting where I live, it's hard enough just to find a legal buck. nobody's passing on a deer because of it's age.
I shoot first and ask questions latter,,,,,is that wrong???
Nope. If it's brown it's down.
Yea I know this video is dumb who cares about the age if it’s a nice doe and you need meat shoot it, if it’s a huge buck but 2-3 years shoot it like wth.
I always thought to age a whitetail buck, you just look up it’s date? 😂😂😂😜
What about 2 year old
If there's grass on the feild I'm game
Dumbass. If you are gonna write stupid comments you should at least know how to spell. Fields
These so called trophy hunters will shoot a trophy buck no matter what age it is, they do not pass up a trophy because it is young
People were I live shot spikes all the time. That makes me sick.
The only way to learn to age deer is look at a lot of deer. We have no problem estimating people’s age because we have seen countless people of deferent ages over many years. Young children have trouble estimating the age of a person simply from lack of experience. Same is true with deer if you’ve seen enough deer it’s as easy to age a deer as a person you can’t mistake a 15 year old and a 40 year old person if you have seen enough deer you can’t mistake a 3 year old and a 7 year old deer. There’s no more a trick to deer it than there is with people if your having trouble you simply need to look at more deer. Mature deer are unmistakable in appearance, they way they carry themselves, and behavior. None of the skinny six and eight pointers hanging around your feeder at 8 am every day bumping antlers and chasing does are mature they are the teenagers of the deer world.
You're aging deer that have been fed year round and never know real hunting pressure....big difference than a mountain buck who has good years and bad years of mast. I have seen 5 1/2 year old mountain bucks that don't have sagging bellies or huge necks....it really depends on what region and how much they get to eat during their life cycle. You can't compare truly wild deer to deer raised on ranches where they see humans everyday and never have to worry about going hungry...right Warren?
Old enough for me.
I like younger deer.. think the meat tastes better
If you like the look of a deer shoot it!
He is as old as he is going to get.
Very Very Very rudimentary explanation ...you obviously know more why not share the info ?
yeah ok , and i bet you any money in the world that there is not one hunter in this planet that would of looked at the milo hanson buck witch is the world record and would have said ,,,,,ahhh look at that 3 1/2 year old buck pass , ,,,,,,,,nobody because it's almost impossible to believe that it was only 3 1/2
Females vary a little but sounds like you're describing a person.
I just want to judge the age of a deer so I can understand and treasure them not hunt them. Why are all these videos of deer hunter videos -.-
Kinda like women
