  • Our month of Halloween Horror continues, this time with an extremely long review of The Fall of Delta Green RPG by Pelgrane Press. This adopts the wonderful Delta Green RPG by Arcdream to the GUMSHOE system, and takes players into the 1960s era of Delta Green, right before it was shut down by the US government for reasons I'll leave unspoiled.
As you can probably tell from the length of this video, I like this game *a lot*, particularly as a huge fan of Delta Green. Pelgrane somehow manages to bring over all the defining elements of Delta Green -- the fatalistic 'welcome to the apocalypse' vibe, the Bond mechanics, the three types of sanity loss, and more -- and drop them seamlessly into the GUMSHOE framework. Plus the era of play is a really interesting one, and I'm absolutely giddy with anticipation for the upcoming Borellus Connection campaign, so that I can explore this era in a massive, globe--spanning campaign of mayhem and madness.
That being said, the core rulebook hardcover is currently quite hard to find, and out of stock at Pelgrane, so the best I can advise is to keep searching eBay or elsewhere for hardcopies. Also, similar to Delta Green proper, this game is ultimately very bleak -- there's no way to 'win' ultimately, and there's no 'pulpy' action option. The horrors you'll face are truly awful, and your characters will inevitably decline, slowly and painfully, into madness and death. But your heroic sacrifice will allow humanity to last just that little bit longer. Just check with your player group that they're down for a horror game that depicts not only their character's decline, but the slow dissolution of all they hold dear in the outside world -- Delta Green's take on cosmic horror is a few steps beyond your typical 'purist' CoC or ToC game!
