    He was phenomenal as Truman Capote in Capote, one of my favourite performances of the last 20 years. That film is mad underappreciated too. A beautifully made & acted film. Crash won Best Picture that year btw in a year of Capote, Munich & Brokeback Mountain. 😅🤦‍♂️

    • @garyspence2128
      @garyspence2128 Před 28 dny +3

      Crash?? People who were in that deny that they had anything to do with it these days. A hysterical mess of a film. Oscars were afraid to give Best Picture to Brokeback for obvious reasons, but Capote probably lost some voters who went for Brokeback. Munich was also a bit too controversial for the room. They defaulted to Crash, and I never hear it spoken of in the last decade, except as a punchline. Sorry that Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Ang Lee didn't get their moment in the sun for Brokeback Mountain, the film that 'should' have won!

    The tragedy of any talent who dies young is you wonder "could he have done...." and fill in the blank. PSH's lead villain in Mission Impossible tells me a lot about his ability to inhabit a cliche and make it seem like it is possible that he could exist in this world. This is terrifying because you never for second believe Ethan Hunt is "out there" but Hoffman genuinely makes me worry that Owen Davian walks among us. And not for nothing, he enlivens the otherwise lugubrious "Synecdoche, New York" to no small degree. His death is a loss, but what treasures he left for us to enjoy!

    • @Micah_4D
      @Micah_4D Před 28 dny +6

      I've only watched the MI with PSH a handful of times, but I've watch the latter movies dozens of times and I recently did a marathon of the films and I realized that I completely forgot how terrifying PSH's villain is in MI3, none of the villains before or after compare. It was the nonchalance, I think, that is most unsettling.

    • @garyspence2128
      @garyspence2128 Před 28 dny +6

      That was an amazing turn for him. Fully committed to the role, and although we don't think of Tom Cruise as a 'great actor', playing opposite Hoffman really elevated Tom's performance in that. Philip's character had Ethan Hunt running scared! You really believed the menace in him. Something similar to his role in Charlie Wilson's War, with Tom Hanks. Just a unique actor. But you also felt the sadness in his manner, on and off the screen. Explains the drugs, but I won't condemn him for all that. Everyone has to walk the path, and find their way thru this world.

      @@garyspence2128 If you think Hoffman elevates Cruise's performance in MI3, which I agree he does, watch Magnolia. It's the best acting of Cruise's career, and I don't think it happens without Hoffman.
      Cruise deserved the Oscar nomination he got for Magnolia. He probably deserved the win; Michael Caine (as much as I love his work) certainly didn't for Cider House Rules. You could make an argument for Haley Joel Osment, who is amazing in The Sixth Sense, and Jude Law is quite good in The Talented Mr. Ripley, but I think Cruise is better than both. I've always thought not winning that award convinced Cruise he would never get one, so he might as well lean into the "Hey, watch me risking my life in ever more ridiculous ways for your entertainment" phase of his career.

    I definitely recommend you check out "Love Liza". If you're into gut wrenching indie movies. It's a movie about this dude whose wife kills herself and leaves a suicide note that he refuses to open and read. He becomes addicted to huffing gasoline and his life falls apart around him as he spirals into depression.
    It's a really sad movie.

    Burr is right. I've met people that say that hate Hoffman because they didn't like a character. That's an indication of a flawless performance. He becomes a character to the point that you cannot distinguish where the character ends and he begins.

      I was also floored at the loss. The one that really messed me up was Michael Kenneth Williams. I actually cried and as I write this I'm tearing up. They touch our souls, I guess.

    I didn't know that a young Hoffman was in a Scent of a Woman and Patch Adams, he was a great villain. He could really disappear into whatever character he was playing.

    To Bill Burr, or anyone out there who loves PSHoffman as much as I do, watch Flawless, starring PSHoffman and Robert DeNiro. Of course PSHoffman is ahhhhmazing in it. This is the movie that I discovered PSHoffman (so maybe I was late to the game). The movie has so much heart and I was absolutely blown away at his performance. DeNiro does a great job too. Really good movie. I miss PSH soooo badly. Solidly one of the greats and the best actor of my generation.
