Rhaenys and Meleys said goodbye to each other before they went into battle. They knew they would not return to Dragonstone. Their death was devastating.
its sucks when we kind of know how the story will go (because of the books), but man.. during the battle.. when you see how she could've fled before that last spiral w/ Vhagar, it just saddens you. Rhaenys could've left with the Green side still taking a huge loss with Aegon and Sunfyre being severely damaged and some ruin to their army.

I loved how this showed how it is when a dragon rider and her dragon are tuly bonded to each other. Not once did Meleys reject Rhaenys' command, even when she knew it meant they'd both die. They had harmony, and they danced together in the skies till the end.

Had to put my pup down recently and he gave me these same eyes. Was a sudden and I'm sure scary death, but I hope being there kissing him gave him some comfort.

When they started spinning in the air, I got chills down my spine and each freaking vertebrae.
When Sunfyre got beaten by Meleys, The Red Queen... I was saddened. I never knew I would have so much sympathy for Aegon II (Alicent can't go on a day without being a terrible parent).
When Vaghar bites onto Meleys neck and she looks at Rhaenys one last time... my poor baby. My poor Sunfyre, my poor Meleys, my Vaghar... they're all innocent.

The thing that I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE about Tom Glynn Carney as an actor is that when he’s in his character, his eyes are so expressive of Aegon’s doubts, vulnerabilities, and insecurities of being King. Even in a scene where Aegon is angry, you can still see Aegon’s insecurity in his eyes. I LOVE that about him!

I sobbed when Meleys looked back at Rhaenys and cried again each time I thought about it after the episode was over. This is a level of the dragon bond that we haven't seen before, and it was gut wrenching. Also, the genuine smile from Aegon when Sunfyre booped him was so nice to see, you could almost imagine the fun they had together as they were growing up.

@JamesDeBall super sad how Aegon threw their lives away. Drunk driving in their FIRST battle against a much bigger and battle-tested dragon. Meleys brought her WAR FACE, ready to die if she has to. Aegon went drunk and scared.
Sunfyre was so cool and loyal to such a POS. I think we all felt awful watching even a fantasy creature go down like that.

He really was. And he hatched with Aegon, so they’re the same age. He’s just a baby boy who probably only ever played and then boom, made to fight and get permanently handicapped. None of this is nice. The succession business is a nasty, deadly game that has killed many people.
I was NOT in a rush. In fact, knowing this kills their house gave me anxiety. I knows dragons aren’t real, but, if you’ve ever had a pet who was hurt, the sound was the same. That limp body after her neck was broken and her eyes shutting was so fucking triggering! I don’t think I can keep watching.😢😢😢

Not only that, but also the fact Rhaenys was battling Laena's memory. Sad.

Daemon had YEARS to "take" the Throne if that's what he actually wanted.
What he wanted was for Viserys to want him as his Hand and for them to rule together.

No no no, Gray, I don't think they are implying she is Daemon's daughter. I think they are just saying that his support throughout the years is what made her the queen she was. He is the one who opened her eyes to the way the smallfolk the royals, he's the one who kept suggesting that she make certain moves to secure her future as the heir, and when she needed him the most and said she could not defeat the Greens without her help, he is the one who found a way to get her out of her marriage to Laenor so she could marry Daemon. Without him as her king-consort, she couldn't have held out against the Greens because no one will DARE to mess with Daemon. And remember, this is a hallucination from his own deep dark thoughts and feelings, so from his POV, I'm sure HE thinks that he "created" the queen that Rhaenyra has become. He's heroic and villainous all at once GRRM says, and that dichotomy is really warring inside him.

It looked like Rhaenys died at around the same time her dragon did rather than dying from the impact. The mystical dragon bond was just that strong and it’s really nice to see that represented in the series.
God she went out like a straight G! This show is the perfect example of how to write Badass Strong Female Characters! Hollywood needs to take notes cuz this show is full of em.

It made me cry when Meleys looked into Rhaenys eyes when she knew it was all over.
Vhagar and Meleys were the mounts of Baelon the Brave and Alyssa, the parents of Viserys and Daemon. Soon Vhagar will have to fight to the death with another “spouse”.
I hate that they made Rhaneys basically suicidal.
Edit: now that I’ve heard your explanation of her wanting to end the war, it makes so much more sense. And now I understand the behavior and it’s gut wrenching!

She could've burned them all to a crisp during Aegon's coronation. She didn't.
She wanted to correct the mistake.
Also, if she killed Vaghar, Rhaenyra could've flown to the capital and ended the war right there.

She went out like a G!! I knew she was going to leave us but I must admit she went out how she should have. She knew wasn't a good reason to go home, she just needed to continue. for the time she could have ended it, for the times she tried to find a good ending. She left it all out on the battlefield and I cheered her the whole way, even when she realized she was done.
damn... the way you broke that down made so much sense. probably felt some guilt from not burning them all when she left the dragon pit, so instead of running again just leave it all on the battle field, regardless the outcome. she punished Sunfyre, before Vhagar burned her. & Rhaenys def had time to flee tho, hate it was written this way.

Calling Jace Baby Breakbones😂 I love it. Also I love how you’re drawing a clear parallel between like “Oh you embarrassed me in front of your bros and a bunch of sex workers? I’m gonna embarrass you in the council room, where making you look weak and stupid ACTUALLY matters, you pathetic idiot”😂 We’ve even seen Jace struggling a little bit with his high valeryian, and she tells him not to have unreasonable expectations of himself, although she was speaking high valeryian as naturally as she did the common tongue long before she was his age-shoutout to Millie Alcock for making it sound so natural! So maybe it’s actually not crazy that Aegon’s high velryian wouldn’t be amazingly perfect and Aemond has a little bit of second son cope, it’s still a really great way to demonstrate who’s in power and more importantly, who isn’t. Which is Aegon. Like everything else important that takes discipline, everything that he isn’t naturally gifted at, like dragonriding, he slacks off at. He even asks his mother what he should do, and she tells him. And he promptly ignores her very frank advice.
That scene was SO GREAT.
It told me all I needed to know, subtly, through sub-text.
Aemond knew how to speak High Valyrian fluently, with Aegon being absolutely clueless (probably because he'd rather drink himself into oblivion than to pay attention to his lessons).
@@Δ-Δ-Δ-Δ yeah even Jace was far ahead of what Aegon seems capable of in this episode, he makes a translation error back to the common tongue in the sentence “he ordered that the trees be…killed?” Which rhaeneyra corrects him as “Felled-T’is a related word.” So he made an educated guess. Aegon doesn’t even seem to be able to produce a cohesive sentence. I literally don’t know what he was asking Aemond in that scene, he was basically submitting to him while saving the only face available to him-the language barrier, but I think everyone on the council could tell he didn’t have the ability to truly reply.
Rhaenys was my favorite character and I am so sad she is gone. I hope the greens pay dearly for these deaths.
Sunfyre reminded me of my first golden retriever when I was a kid. I don't know why. I cried so much this episode.

I cried when Rhaenys and Meleys fell. It broke my heart, I love that character, one of my favs! I thought it was beautiful to show the exchanging gazes between the dragon and its rider and both knew their fate. It was really beautifully done. HOTD has again demonstrated respect for the books, lore and Martin's world.
“River thugs ” had me laughing out loud. Now I’m gonna play Ridin Dirty every time they are on screen ! Thank you for the breakdowns. I feel like you are my escape & best friend , especially after these emotional episodes !
Let's just take a second and think about Meleys last look to Rhaenys.. the artistry behind that beautiful CGI moment where they made a look say so much. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you" " love you forever" and so on. Was so sad and beautiful
This was great and terribly sad. It makes sense how aegon was burned by his brother after humiliating him last episode. I will miss meleys and the queen that never was, the first upclose we see of sunfyre and his bond with aegon. Im sad we never got to see that before now that he will be known as a great chicken (can no longer fly so he's hopping like a chicken)

Rhaenys should have focused on taking out as many soldiers as possible after she got away briefly - rather than going back to Vhaegar! She knew she was gonna die so take out as many as possible in the moments she had

I thought dragon warfare would be cool. But it was actually really sad. Especially when Sunfyre started crying. It's like when your dog whimpers. Definitely tough to watch, which is weird since it's all cgi.
I had to watch the behind the scenes to remind myself it’s all green screen cuz I was in shambles
That's actually a good thing to take away - to the point that it might be intentional on the show's side. A _lot_ of people went to war thinking it was all glory and legend, and what they found was ... not like that.
I liked how Rhaenys+Meleys handle Aegon+Sunfyre with seeming ease and then fighting Vhagar she did damage back, it seems like they're emphasizing experience over size.
Then I admit I got pissed that she stupidly flies over the one place a dragon as big as Vhagar can hide, a place SHE just used to rise up and attack Cole's forces by surprise: the cliffside.
I think she should have died when they fell together, like in the book.
I was thinking the same thing, but I also was thinking Vhagar just fell to the ground. We saw her walking so how did she get back up in the air, fly around Meleys and Rhaenys, just to be able to hide behind the cliff and attack. Vhagar seems too big to have been able to pull that off unnoticed. It doesn’t matter much, we all knew the outcome but I just kind of think they should have survived. Also how does a massive dragon like vhagar fall to the ground with all that mass and not even have a scratch. Amazing CGI though, I couldn’t have asked for better. And to think it was Aemond who burnt Aegon. Chefs kiss.

I thought Daemons dream of cutting off young rhaenyra’s head and her still speaking was saying that violence doesn’t make things better. No matter what he does, no matter how many people he kills, his pain is inside him, and physically killing people does not remove them from your head.

That was the most emotional, but bad ass episode I’ve watched in HOD, and GOT combined. Wow! Then coming to watch your recap afterwards makes it all that much better.
