Saint JOHN OF THE CROSS (1542 - 1591), translated by David LEWIS (1814 - 1895)
The poems of St John of the Cross, with their mystic depth and spiritual ecstasy, stand among the world's great poems of Divine Love in all traditions. St John is one of the Roman Catholic Doctors of the Church, was a reformer of the Carmelite Order, and co-founder with St Teresa of Avila of the Discalced Carmelites. Teresa invited John to follow her, and in the protocols of the times, also became her Spiritual Director and Confessor. Many of their individual works could be considered the products of their mutual support and inspiration. - Summary by Ed Humpal

Oh bliss to know not; yet through darkness and pain; Oh bliss to know not! Oh Word, listen to my word not in vain? Love infused in light! Love forever reign! Oh bliss to know not; oh bliss to have one thought! Love! A Love that was never sought..is His.

The opening is of St John escaping from the 10x6 prison cell his own brother monks had held him inside the Monastery for over a year. He was cruelly psychologically tortured by them.

I assume this was written in Spanish originally. Why is its rhyme and meter correct in English then?

I believe that GABs title “el poeta de amor y Del dolor “ should more accurately be applied to San Juan de la Cruz!

It is actually a mechanically generated voice. However it is they do that now, using a human voice that has just recorded the words without particular feeling.
