    America member Dewey Bunnell wrote this song. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times October 1, 2006, he explained: "It was 1963 when I was in seventh grade, we got a flat tire and we're standing on the side of the road and I was staring at this highway sign. It said 'Ventura' on it and it just stuck with me. It was a sunny day and the ocean there, all of it.

    Dewey Bunnell’s autobiographical song recalls his childhood car rides on the portion of California’s Pacific Coast Highway that passes through Ventura, California, appropriately named the Ventura Freeway. This was before his military father was reassigned to England, where he met his bandmates in the school for the children of American servicemen near the base.

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer Před měsícem +4

      Hey John, good to see you on another channel, pal. Quick correction, here, though. The road Dewey's describing is the Pacific Coast Highway during trips in the family car heading south from the city of Ventura, along the coast down to the L.A. beaches. The Ventura Freeway, which does run concurrently with the PCH for a 50-mile stretch north of the city of Ventura, separates from it just a bit south of the city of Ventura, at which point it (the Ventura Freeway) does not travel along the coast heading south any longer, it becomes a major east-west road down in the L.A. area. So the song's not about Dewey's memories of riding along the coast to the L.A. Beaches on the Ventura Freeway, because at that point the Ventura Freeway is not a coast-hugging road, it's inland with no view of the water any longer. Instead, it's the Pacific Coast Highway that hugs the coastline south from Ventura to the L.A. beaches which Dewey so fondly remembers looking out the family car windows to the beautiful ocean and beaches. So in reality, Dewey didn't change the name from, "Ventura Freeway", to, "Ventura Highway", he changed the name from, "Pacific Coast Highway", to, "Ventura Highway". And he did so simply because it sounded better, and he had a vivid memory of a sign for, "Ventura" (the county or city) on the side of the PCH they were traveling. That no such road exists didn't matter.
      Oh, and by the way, if the hosts of this channel are reading this, here's the answer to another one of your questions. When his family would stop for a break on the side of the PCH, he and his brother would look up at the clouds and say what animal shapes they were making -- one in particular he recalled was seeing clouds that looked like "alligator lizards".

I cannot recommend you go watch them highly enough, they are extraordinary performances, and Harri loved them both.

    Dewey Bunnell, the song's vocalist and writer, has said that the lyric "alligator lizards in the air" in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California, where they had a flat tire. While his father changed the tire, he and his brother stood by the side of the road, watched the clouds, and saw a road sign for Ventura.[4]
    In the booklet for the boxed set, Highway, he states that the song "reminds me of the time I lived in Omaha as a kid and how we'd walk through cornfields and chew on pieces of grass. There were cold winters, and I had images of going to California. So I think in the song I'm talking to myself, frankly: 'How long you gonna stay here, Joe?' I really believe that 'Ventura Highway' has the most lasting power of all my songs. It's not just the words - the song and the track have a certain fresh, vibrant, optimistic quality that I can still respond to".[5] The song has a "Go West, young man" motif in the structure of a conversation between an old man named Joe and a young and hopeful kid. Joe was modeled after a "grumpy" old man he had met while his dad was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi, at Keesler Air Force Base.[4] He also stated "I remember vividly having this mental picture of the stretch of the coastline traveling with my family when I was younger. Ventura Highway itself, there is no such beast, what I was really trying to depict was the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway 1, which goes up to the town of Ventura."[6]

    The song's vocalist and writer, Dewey Bunnell, has said that the lyric "alligator lizards in the air" in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California.

    Drove the Ventura Highway many times while on vacations or responding to major wildfires in California.. This song would always come to mind .. Salty air, the way the colors in the sky would change from orange to pink then purple as the sun would set .. From Santa Barbara to the gaviota pass was always my favorite stretch of the highway …

    Aaaaand... nostalgia! My parents bought this album at some point in the '70s when I was too young to remember hearing it. I grew up seeing the album all my childhood, but discovered this song in the late '80s my senior year in high school. I played this track till I thought I'd wear through the vinyl xD
    A departure for me (I was BIG into new wave/synth/alternative dance and rock at the time). I cant hear this song, Crosby, Stills, and Nash's "Judy Blue Eyes" or Chicago's "Beginnings" without flashing back to this time in my life. They were happy times, and discovering the value of my parent's music contributed greatly to it. It also opened other doors of appreciation.
    Speaking of which, thank you for the journey back to that time :D

    YEP! I liked them already, but thought the whole way to concert there is no way that combo will work. BUT IT DID!
    Everyone just jammed with America and their chill vibe and I remember when they finished how good it was live! America rocked!❤🎉😂❤

Listen carefully to all America's music, drums played by Willie Leacox. People talk about great drummers and of course Leacox not being flashy or craving attention, was an extremely accomplished drummer. One drummers can learn from.

    "Ventura Highway" is a song by America that became one of their signature tunes1. The lyrics are about someone called Joe who is walking down a road and is not affected by the snow. The protagonist talks to Joe about leaving and going to Ventura Highway where the days are longer and the nights are stronger. Joe tells the protagonist that they can always change their name before leaving2. The song is actually about the singer having an internal debate about whether he should migrate to California

      Umm, no. The song is not describing the 101 between Ventura and L.A., that road is inland and heading west to east, and not the one songwriter Dewey Bunnell and his family traveled south down to the LA beaches when he was a kid, that inspired this song with his memories of gazing out the window at the ocean and coastline.
