  • Unfortunately, Isayama had issues writing his ending, and as a result he has some regrets.
Attack on titan is the best story in anime, and the ending will never ruin that! Hopefully Hajime Isayama will have his head cleared up about the ending soon.

Idk does anyone else get the feeling that the last few chapters weren't his. It just seems so odd. He clearly laid out the plot and put in foreshadowing that he never followed it up. He never did that before but all of a sudden near the end he rushes it and it has random unexplained things. It just doesn't feel right and anyone with a brain can realise it. It feels like this wasn't his ending but Kodansha/Japan made him ruin it.

You shouldn't have used the fan translation to prove your point, especially since it was already changed in the tankōbon anyway. Saying that he regrets his ending is twisting his words to push an agenda that is blatantly false and malicious. "For lsayama, the last part of the manga is a difficult theme beyond his ability. Isayama feels that he has not been able to fully express these themes with the manga, so he regrets it. The closer to the final chapter, the harder Isayama would try searching for reviews and comments online."
Putting the highly interpretative claim that Isayama became more insecure closer to the final chapter aside, this only means that he regrets being unable to properly express what he wanted to portray, not that he dislikes the major themes of his ending like what you're trying to imply. Huge difference.

Eren, who used to be an angry boy and wants to kill all of the titan, started to learn about the truth about the world. He eventually grew up and did not hate his enemy anymore. He understood them. But since the enemy insisted on the annihilation of the people of Paradise island, he had to do it. Regardless of whether he is emotionally conflicted or guilty, he has taken a stance to do what he needs to do to save his people. That's literally the general theme of AOT. People realize that the other side is just human like them, but they have to do their duty.

And that confession to mikasa was dog shit, for one it wasn’t even a love confession he basically just said he wanted her to remain obsessed with him forever and then he contradicts that by saying he wants her to move on. This ending was so shit and I understand why isayama hates it, people only defend it because they’re in it for ships, which is probably why isayama felt pressured in the first place. Guys you don't seem to understand why half of the fans disliked the ending. We've been reading it and following it for years, enjoying the mind-blowing twists and deep story.
Since Marley arc started, we haven't had a proper Eren POV (except for memories). That's from chapter 91 to 138. Keep in mind SnK dropped a chapter every once in a month.
We only knew for sure he had the obsession to be free and protect Eldia at all costs, to the point of literally destroying the whole world.
Now, personally my thoughts during the final arc were: "Ok, he said Zeke's plan was twisted and he's also going to this extreme for a better outcome, must have something HUGE between his hands. Also Grisha obeyed him because he showed him this future he aimed at, the cost is high but the end must be planned from top to bottom for it to be worth it".
Then chapter 139 came and here we are. Whole plot changed, now it turns out love was the main theme of the story. Forty seven months guiding the readers in one direction only to change it last minute, leaving aside what he didn't explain ("only Ymir knows"). It wouldn't have been such a fiasco if he used those 47 previous chapters to introduce this sort of ending. Don't get me wrong, I love EM but not the way it ended. She didn't free herself from anything, still crying over Eren and wearing the scarf until her last day, the least healthy thing ever.
I choose to believe that Isayama wrote himself into a corner introducing so many themes and had a really hard time wrapping it all up, and did the best that he could. Hope in the future he makes an original alternative ending, because SnK is (or could have been) the best story ever told.

Def a drastic noticeable reduction in quality pacing/ and genuine amazing moments after the Marley battle arc,m I think the last truly great chapters were basically 119-122 after that yeah drastic reduction seemed like he was just tying to get it to the end , I get his pressure though I just at the very least he had done something like have Historia have had Erens baby after all that way Eren at least leaves something behind and his family line isn't bloody extinct ya know...which it is...Instead Historia has a random baby with some random guy for no reason, still great series overall but for me yeah aside from maybe a few isolated random moments here and there pretty much nothing from chapter 124-139 really blew me away or had me anywhere near as excited and interested as the countless amazing moments from all previous arcs, It really just came off as something like where he just didn't quite know how to end it, but also wanted to get there as fast as possible so thats a not great combo problem to have ya know, I still love the series overall and Il reread and rewatch AOT chapters 1-123 many times in my life, and watch seasons 1,2,3, and 4 part 1 and first few episodes of part 2, but yeah almost nothing has me particular excited after eren is sho and the paths dimension chapters I really do consider those to be the last truly great moments, not to mention Eren is essentiall ya part time character last 25 chapters, but it also means in hindsight Eren shooting him really did have life altering consequences since its implied he was dead in his human form and could not heal his body ever again, was essentially reduced to a head on titan life support. I appreciate the guts that took to do that I mean having your main character get his head blown off with 20+ chapters left takes guts and it was really well done I thought, but at same time well when your main character is like literally arguably the best character or most interesting and one of the main reasons so many are invested in it, well having your protagonist/antagonist hybrid Main star essentially dead forever in his human form and never having a real scene again in reality few exceptions aside kinda hard to write around that and keep the same interest ya know, not that other characters aren't great to many of them absolutely are its not just the Eren show....but was just another major issue of it is all. So huge guts for killing Eren in 119 with 20+ chapters to go, but also well that sucks..killing your main character off with 20 chapters to go lol, and while its not explicitly said or revealed its highly implied Eren insidet he founding titan was just his head and thats it no body healing or etc there connected to the titan because of Gabbis shot and that he could never return to human form or heal his human body ever again and again thats a huge deal huge twist and takes guts to write that in a way its crazy because it makes erens decapitation truly have life altering consequences that cant be undone, But the whole time its not even said outright thats Erens status and the reader is just left kinda confused like so where's Eren lol cause sure his founding titan is there in a lot of background images saw his head in one panel here and there but otherwise thats it hes barely a part time character last arc really, then it makes bit more sense when Mikkas officially kills him in 2nd to last chapter and we see in finale oh ok I guess Gabbis shot really was that serious that really was the end of Erens human life......h was essentially dead this whole time and is stick in the founding titan well damn.....again bold but kinda disappointing to..especially made worse knowing oh so Eren didnt at the very least get to leave behind a child with Historia to at least have a part of himself and his family live on! nope hes just dead...his family line is dead....and he died at age 19 with no girl,no family, no children ,def gonna be in the hiustory books though as a legend for sure but just not very fulfilling and the whole last 20 chapters definately by compoarison a let down and simply forced not as well written and etc overall.....

I think the ending was fitting since eren still had the curse of ymir of living 13 years or die in the hands of mikasa, I think dying naturally would be boring, dying in the hands of your lover seemed more touching. About the rumbling and the release of the titans seemed just right since we wonder as fans of aot of what-ifs. What if the Titans in the walls are released. The final battle is the release of the old wine that has been brewed all along with bitter-sweet ending but kept us drank all the way to keep us watching the series. Becoming FREE for Eren is beyond those walls, and those walls kept the eldians oblivious to the not knowing people exist behind those walls. All people of marleyan are brainwashed that they eldians are spawns of the devil and there's no going around it, it an inevitable war. It is the endgame brothers. It is all fitting too that he has reincarnated as a bird a symbol for freedom, Isayama remained true to the story as it is the logo of the survey corps. Let's just keep an open mind here and not get too attached to the characters of the story as they are just mere ideologies. It's like Isayama saying wake up guys you've drunk too much of it, too admittedly. It's a truly well-woven masterpiece. Freedom is obtained through the sacrifice of the masses for the sake of the future eldians and his lover Mikasa and best friend Armin. Maybe Isayama would offer an alternative ending who knows maybe he would do a rework on it.

I’ve read the Manga x3 over, and I personally don’t have an issue with the ending. I mean, after all, Eren trapped himself and everyone in a never ending time loop that’s all about his quest for freedom.
So literally, there is no happy ending for this story, and there can’t be a ‘happy’ ending unless the chapter in which Grisha sees Future Zeke and Eren is removed, as well as the Attack Titan’s ability to Transcend Time in its quest for freedom. Essentially, he’ll have to redo tons of work over for the sake of appealing to a half of the fan base that hates the ending.
Me and where I stand? I love the ending. It’s hopeless and bleak, just like how the Dark Fantasy Genre is. Eren was never free, being a slave to the idea of freedom and fighting for it; Eren has condemned everyone, friends and enemies alike, in an never ending time loop because of his selfish desires for freedom; each time the loop “ends” the cycle just repeats again and again.
I enjoyed the ending, loved it even. I never expected a “Happy Ending” with Eren plowing Misaka and raising a family of his own with her, and Armin shacking up with Annie. I expected something that will make me think, just as much as this entire series as a whole did up until this point, and I came to the aforementioned conclusion above.
Everyone is trapped in an endless time loop, all because of Eren’s selfish desire for freedom. *_Everyone_* is a slave to Eren.

I honestly feel like that was the most realistic ending in world view.
Mikasa keeping the scarf on was realistic as people truly can't move on from someone they love their entire life when there isn't a closure talk to talk in person.
Also the marley and eldians in the islands will always have bad blood and would be in arms against each other no matter what even of titans vanished given their history. Also not to forget the world wanted to capture the mineral deposits down in the islands so they would have attacked eventually. Also the other characters going on with their life doing their best to survive through whatever means truly speaks a realistic value. So overall it's a ending that we fans might not have wanted but it sure is a realistic one.

That's why I hate when the stories are written organically. When the author doesn't know how it will end and just adds cool things without thinking about what it will lead to.
I mainly blame the industry itself, not authors: authors often do not know for how long their stories will last: publishers could tell you to wrap it up early, or demand that the story needs to be longer that it is necessary.
So all of this leads to the sloppy endings. It's especially painful when an epic story spanning years has no satisfying ending.

I think his ending was actually written well in terms that it made sense with everything that had been established to that point… minus there being enough titans within the walls to encompass every part of the earth (realistically, they would have become spaced out enough while walking out from paradi that much of the world would see only one Titan or none by the time they came by). It also wasn’t realistic that 80% of humanity was killed off either unless that was due to ripple effects from destroying the ecosystem and other life around the area. Eren’s actions and motivations though, as well as many other characters actions and motives, were very understandable until the bitter end.

Is there even a freedom in the first place or everyone is a slave to something? And we know Eren kept on moving forward to go through a living hell which is his war against the whole world, what did he saw beyond that hell? Is it hope? Or another hell? Did he really do the rumbling for the sake of the Eldians? If that's the case why did he even let his friends have the chance to stop him? Isn't better to just end everything? Or the miniscule of humanity within him felt an extreme sense of guilt thus he gave his friends the chancen to stop his henious actions? If he didn't do the rumbling for the sake of his friends and his fellow Eldians then what is his true intentions behind the rumbling? When Armin asked him if its necessary for him to go this far? He simply answered He don't know. Is it because his emotions and thoughts are conflicted because his actions breeds more than one intention and emotion to him?

Also I feel like he could have put things even more well together(a lot of people think the stuff about Eren calling himself an idiot is dumb) maybe if he had time, I am someone that has been able to understand the ending and the time paradox created with Eren’s power but yea, it seemed like the author wasn’t able to make the ending exactly how he wanted it, and he also wasn’t able to explain much of how Eren was able to alter the timeline:
Simple explanation of what Eren did without explaining much of the lore because it would take too long:
Eren uses the founding titan in him to command his attack titan within him to send memories to the past and to himself as well in order to influence the timeline(Ymir broke a lot of limitations on what he can normally do with the founder and attack titan by allowing him to use the founder even tho he isn’t a royal blood because Eren gave her the will to act on her own, a lot of people think that Ymir having the will to act on her own should allow her to leave the paths which isn’t true because she is in the paths because she regretted ever saving King Fritz because the way King Fritz treated her after she saved him felt like punishment and made her lose the will to live because she realized that King Fritz would never look at her the way he looked at all the other woman) and make sure that the rumbling happens, which makes the timeline fixed and there is foreshadowing of the timeline being fixed such as the “dream” Eren has in season one episode one.
I honestly just want to thank Isayama for everything he has brought into my life and for creating this masterpiece of a show.

it was never a happy ending for aot lets just be honest, the ending was predetermined from the beginning of the series and i agree of what you said, eren said it all to armin, also ymir waited for somebody to end this living nightmare because she couldnt do it herself and kept on obeying king fritz for 2000 years, then she saw mikasa who was willing to sacrifice her own love for the sake of the world and broke the curse.

@@Spantzcatdog well up to 131 with the exception of the lazy writing of the alliance, AOT WAS a masterpiece with some of the character development, political conflict, and moral debates.
