      I think they should get 1 member of each house. They have plenty of power already in other areas. And they are not a state.

      P.M. Laberge
      How is the individual citizen in DC, paying taxes less equal as a human being than a citizen of Texas or Wyoming? They have more people than 3 states and they have zero reps in Congress, they deserve 3 to fall in line with the 14th amendments equal protection clause.

      I think it is time to abolish DC and reincorporate it back into Maryland. This would solve all the issues of citizens rights as well as remove the congress from the role of administering DC. Remember that the southern (Alexandria) portion of DC was returned to Virginia in 1846, so there is a precedent. Since DC is mandated by the constitution, but not its size, all land except the area directly under the Capitol can be returned without requiring a constitutional amendment. And since there are no permanent residents in the Capital, there are no citizen rights issues.

    Do you think we should have the states ratify the 1978 amendment, or should we go forward with H.R. 51?

    I believe their non-voting House member serves on committees, and is treated like any committee member, BUT cannot vote in floor votes.

    Why can't we just have a voice? I'm tired of our congresswoman always yelling! She lives on the same block as my friend. We need a voice we have more people than 2 states. Just give us representation

    In 1790, the U.S. capital moved from New York City to Philadelphia; then in 1800, the capital was moved to Washington, D.C.

    • @Romanellochw
      @Romanellochw Před 3 lety

      It wasn't moved to DC. DC was CREATED. Also, since DC was created out of thin air, why didn't they say you can't be a resident of DC in the first place? Wouldn't that have made more sense?

    As you know we libertarians have a bazillion reasons why voting is a bad idea but if you are going to have a vote, gosh yes they should be included. Not a real important amendment though is it. Would you say this is the least important one? I'd sure like to see your guess as to the subject of future amendments.

  • @3meninaroom

    I would definitely say yes on the house member. So at least one, and of course more if the population reaches the threshold for another, and so on. I thinking no on the senate seats because its not a state.

    I'm not too big on political discussions, but here is my humble opinion:
    Though I feel that all citizens have a right to representation, I am wary about giving too much power to any single urban population. If growing up around Detroit has taught me one thing, it is that these groups don't always make the wisest choices. (But then again, the losing 49% often says that about the other half of the nation following each presidential election.)

    • @hiphughes
      @hiphughes  Před 10 lety +7

      Mad respect Mr. Nerd Report but should it matter whether or not you like how a person votes? I don't like how rural Mississippi votes in many cases but I'm not sure that's a sound argument to withhold from them their natural right to fair and equal representation. Although perhaps because I am a member of an urban voting population, so I may be biased..... but I also don't want to lose my vote..... Hashtag Worried :)

    I honestly think that the Constitution bars territorys from having Congressional representation because of the two senators from each state parr of the Constitution. It is really up to the courts to decide. If they say D.C. is eligible to have Congressional representation, they should not have senators due to the "each STATE shall have two senators" part of the Constitution.

    What's the appoint of an amendment when you can just pass an act in Congress? Does an amendment ( not including the bill of rights) have power over a simple act passes by Congress?

    First it seems according to you Republicans or atleast the most prominent ones were for the right to vote in the election for president and all but 2, if im not mistaken, were democrat controlled..
    Also What about a governor? If DC gets statehood then that means there DC needs Sovereignty from the federal government. Also why did they decide to move from New York to a Jurisdiction specifically controlled by the federal government?

  • @nickking9568

    • @thefreelich4875
      @thefreelich4875 Před rokem

      And the runner-up in a presidential election was also meant to be vice president. The Constitution is a great document containing a great system, but it is imperfect. Even the founders admitted as much! Also, Washington DC isn't prohibited from being a state in the Constitution. It's just that the Constitution permits the federal government to directly govern the capital city as a non-state entity. Congress is also allowed to admit new states. Saying that the federal government needs to control Washington DC because of the Constitution is like saying Congress is legally-required to constantly commission postal routes because of the Postal Clause.
