Your reason for loving Slam Dunk is the reason I love Hajime no Ippo; I have had the pleasure of re-watching that anime over and over and I still hold out hope for another season! You will grow to love the protagonist and you will learn the sport of boxing through a true beginner as well. The cast around him are just as great and I would say that Takamura is one of my favorite characters in any anime. He exposes himself to be the greatest person, you just need to see it happen.
I’m not huge fond of many sports anime since mostly it is overdone with unrealistic super sayian POWWEEERRRRR and but DAMN, after watching Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo, Aim for Ace I fell completely in love. I lost interests in most modern anime but discovering vintage anime. Man, it just hits different
Slam Dunk is an actual basketball sports anime. Kuroku's basketball is a shonen anime featuring basketball. I much prefer Slam Dunk's more down to earth approach.
Basketball wsn't a really popular sport in Japan at the time so the series had good reason to want to have newcomers follow along. I love authors like Inoue who like to introduce their own , relative, eclectic tastes and ultimately succeed in making their interests more popular.
Ask a filipino if he/she knows Slam Dunk old or young. You would be surprised on how many people have this childhood. And honestly rewatching it right now makes me appreciate the passion of kids and adult people on the street wearing a shohoku jersey.
Ashita no Joe is amazing, but it's not great because of the boxing, it's great because it has a really well crafted story and consistently written, well developed characters. The sport of boxing takes backseat to that, and it shows in how much the series likes to gloss over a lot of Joe's actual career. Hajime no Ippo on the other hand is great because of the boxing element, because, similar to Slam Dunk, eases the reader into the sport before throwing more complex and interesting strategies and skills into the equation. Contrasting with Ashita no Joe however, its writing is lacking especially in the later parts of the manga/anime, and its characters are more or less your boilerplate shounen characters. But that shouldn't matter too much unless you're a grumpy fuck like me who is tired of Shounen Manga tropes.
You should read REAL, another work by the same mangaka as Slam Dunk that, in a way, represents his own Ashita No Joe version of Slam Dunk, if that makes any sense. Basically, the sport in focus is cripple basketball, however, just like ANJ, it focuses more on the politics and lives of these players.
Slam Dunk is literally one of the greatest spokons of all time. Only spokon I’m taking over it is Ashita No Joe. Ironically speaking those two mangas are so good that relegating them just to the spokon genre is unfair.
Slam Dunk is the only sports anime I've watched and really cared about. One thing that makes it so endearing is the characters, their backstories and interactions, not just the sports.
@@matthewjutzen424 Haikyuu is a relatively mediocre show with hot dudes, not just in the realm of sports animanga, but in General animanga. I have seen all 4 seasons and movies. Kuroko no basket literally treated basic basketball moves like they were something in dbz and made up some really stupid shit that is insulting to the sport. Despite all that, yes, it is pretty. But damn, it is also really stupid.
@Verde ICe - Similar to Haikyuu where they treated the basic Volleyball moves too and even they made up some really stupid shit that is insulting to the sport in Volleyball game
Because Slam Dunk is grounded in reality. It's was done by the author out of the love for the sport and he made a conscious effort to explain the rules and make the games as real as possible.
I remember not caring for sports until I sat down and actually learned it from someone. It's really simple to learn and it's really fun to watch every once in awhile. After learning about sports and not caring prior I can't stand when people call sports stupid or pointless after they don't understand it because it just makes me feel like me when I was ignorant and called sports dumb. Once you learn why people enjoy it you can understand why it can be exciting.
As someone who loves basketball, growing up with Slam Dunk was part of it. For me it was an anime about one of my favorite sports that was grounded in the game I watched and play back in the day but also had great characters you root for. To this day no other sports manga comes close IMO to showcasing the sport itself while making a great story.
I wanna add that Slam Dunk teaches you and makes you love basketball. Ana as a fan of the sport there is a lot to enjoy and pick up on in the games themselves.
I also love the art style of slamdunk. The mangaka can give characters the same hairstyle but you can still tell them apart because of the amazing differences in facial feature... example is the team of sannoh.
I think this is one of the best anime to ever exist. It's not unrealistic, which I find a hard to find quality in all anime and manga shonen. If you read the manga, they don't actually win anything and just end up being passionate about the sport and be good players but not the best. I found that amazing. It makes it relatable to a looooooooooot of basketball amateur players like me even in their 30s or 40s. It perfectly resonates with our own basketball sport love. When I first started playing , I thought I was gonna be amazing at the sport and throughout school and college I grew to be a very good player, a good team player, a consistent player with technique. All this happened through a lot of defeats. There was one thing that always latched on to me though, and I felt this more so in basketball than any other sport. I'll never be in the big leagues and I could never be the best. It just isn't going to happen even if I played 24x7 for the rest of my life. At some point you just accept that and realize that it isn't about winning or losing anyway or being the best. It's about the sport and the love of it. The rush you get on the court when competing against another team member or the opposing team's counterpart. This anime and manga put that feeling into art more so than any other shonen. I've never felt an ounce of relatability with goku or naruto because the world they live in and the things that happen in those worlds are so far away from reality. Even if I learned how to fight, the real way to win a fight is to run fast and away from it. This anime/manga could've easily gone the other way if they just unrealistically showed shohoku winning everything and going on and becoming national champions. It's a manga that isn't about winning or achieving your dreams, it's about the journey to achieve them and how fulfilling it actually is, regardless of victory or defeat. It's a good lesson about the real world and how in life you're going to never be the best at anything really, there's always going to be some person better than you. But it isn't about that at all. It's about giving your 120% at something you're passionate about and that alone is the best fulfilling victory you can get. It got critical acclaim, but sometimes it hurts me when reviewers just always see the literalness in it and never actually think about the actual philosophical lesson in the manga that Inoue put in. This isn't a one of guess because you can see that theme in almost every manga he has written. It's not a surprise because Inoue's own life has been like that. He was extremely talented but in no way the best. he got a lot of money, fame and recognition but still never got the chance to be one of the manga greats. Life just isn't like that. But it doesn't matter. As long as you get to play. You play hard.
That's another facet that adds to the realism of Slam Dunk. Non of the characters became champs or anything of that sort. But they all sure loved the sport. Most sports manga follow the traditional escalation formula of making the MC team become better and better and winning more and more games and titles. Slam Dunk doesnt go that route and keeps it grounded in reality. IRL no deadbeat team is going to win it all even if said team has promising talent. It takes time for that too develop and it's a good life experience for the kids to learn early on.
Honestly, i don't watch anime, mostly because i enjoy reading manga more and Slam Dunk in particular is where i've to praise Inoue Takehiko, he actually made what exist in those old papers alive and have feeling of their own. Aside from that, SD anime has good opening/ending songs, they feel 90' and one of them, Kirameku toki ni Torawarete by Manish made me shed a tear, can you believe it?

The character development of sakuragi is one of the most amazing thing in the manga/anime. Besides... all characters are memorable, even the side characters. Even the RU.KA.WA cheering squad is iconic. That is what KNB lacks.
The anime goes into every excruciating detail of the basics of basketball, almost like an instructional video for 4th grade PE class. The lead character is also a novice but it takes him over 40 episodes to score his first point.
I think Slam Dunk's strength (not just because its funny and makes u cry at the same time, and oh Inoue is just a master story teller) is also that we feel for the various side characters in the main team and also other rival teams, and heck even Sakuragi's gang. I started watching Kuroko's basketball (possibly biased review because I just watched like 10 episodes) and i dont feel the same character development (thus far) as compared to Slam Dunk.
That method of story telling where the protagonist learns as the series goes on reminds me of how Yu-Gi-Oh Arc-V started with the protagonist learning about how Pendulum summoning mechanic works, albeit in a rather rushed fashion where he "somehow" masters it in the span of a few episodes. Despite this, I feel it did a pretty good job of actually teaching me the method of play in the actual card game where I learn with him rather than him know it already. It's nice to see that this method of story telling is used in more places than I thought. Awesome video as always!

Honestly, i'd love to see more anime and manga recommendations and video essays. Kaiji was a great video, and i'd like to see more of what you read and enjoy so I can pick up some stuff. Plus, as always, they're always well written. I'd recommend a video on something like Dorohedoro, which desperately needs more exposure.
one of my favorite manga/anime series. I wish they adapted the final chapters of the manga. I really wanted to see the final game in anime form. Great video Bit
I watched this anime when I was 5 or 7 years old I'm almost 20 and I still watching it because it so freaking good. Slam dunk is popular a anime in the Philippines and basketball is popular too so kids like me in the late 19s and 20s early in the Philippines who loves anime or basketball LOVE this show
just seeing some of these frames made me laugh out loud. I'm not even done watching your video and I've already decided I'm watching it. I heard of the series through dragonball, being that one of my favorite animators from that show worked on this series, so I assumed it was like any other sports anime and lost interest lol.
I used to collect artworks for Slam Dunk, Captain Tsubasa and Dragon Ball as a Kid ! Brings me Nostalgia whenever I watch these anime ! My Childhood Love
I feel I had a pretty similar experience with the Eyeshield 21 manga. Highly recommend giving it a read, especially since the amazing art is done by Murata, of One Punchman fame.
That Excalibur reference from Fate Zero was so accurate of an example. The first time i saw Saber do it blew my fucking mind it was so amazing and epic, so i continued watching not only be cause I just all around loved what was happening in the series, but for the next time she did it. Excellent analysis as always dude, also thanks for the Kaji recommendation video Its thanks to you that I've started getting into all these different types of board games instead of just chess(which is boring to me.)
I remember when Shonen Jump had chapter 1 of Slam Dunk many years back. I was so surprised how he didn't start put as some prodigy who was obsessed witb the game (which is why I couldn't stand Prince of Tennis). You pretty much nailed on the head why I got interested into the manga. Glad to hear you talk about it!
It's why I really enjoy sports shonen. Most of them aren't really about the sport itself and more about telling the story of characters using whatever sport it happens to be as a medium.
This is a top 5 manga for me and I don't know dick about basketball, seen you're also a fan of patlabor I'd love to see you talk up another one of my all time favourites, great video.
I want to get into this because of the art, and how the protag reminds me of Bouya from Crows, and how people described that manga as Slam Dunk minus the basketball.
Not just because the anime is good but because Sakuragi is lovable that you will get drawn to him easily. He's funny that the whole story is not boring to watch and the rivalry with Rukawa is funny too And the fact that I'm a woman whose not into sports specifically Basketball but these made me watch basketball just to see their basketball moves in reality
I love Slam Dunk! I need to watch the anime, I only ever read the manga. It has wonderful character dynamics, humour, sad moments, and it's all-around great at investing the reader.
And unlike you tho, i don't mind sport mangas, especially about subject that i like like soccer, it takes me much courage to go into Slam Dunk and just like you, it changed my mind completely after finished reading it. One could say that it's an unbelievable experience and i'm glad to have read it. :')
I don't even like the sport back then but when I read the manga and watched the anime I was so hyped it got me to a lot of sports like American football, football, Basketball, Volleyball, boxing and rugby I watched every kind of sports anime because of SLAM DUNK. I use to not care about sports now I'm a number 1 fan of it😁
I hope Slam Dunk get the Remake Adaptation it deserves and Finished it in the End just like in Manga.. I'm sad that they didn't got a Inter High Arc and this is the Peak of Slam Dunk. ❤
Oh please, watch Ippo, please watch Hajime no Ippo, watch it, if you liked slam dunk then you'll love Ippo, you basically just describe the story beats of Ippo, watch Ippo, watch it now,
Hajime no Ippo has a similar way of introducing the sport of boxing to people and having a pretty good story and awesome fight scenes. definitely worth a watch!
Jose Colella Ironically I feel like the manga conveys more movement than the anime did. Akin to what this Kotaku article says about One Punch Man anime vs manga. kotaku.com/one-punch-man-shows-why-manga-will-always-matter-1739993533
Maloolz Doesn't matter. It is still a sports anime. Better than Ippo in a lot of ways. Even Hajime No Ippo is influenced by Ashita No Joe/Ashita No Joe 2
as has been said, down to earth, and actually basketball related, not battle shonen with basketball theme, also, I am about as unfit and unwilling to play sports as it gets yet i loved it Pretty top tier
An example of the manga being better than the anime, but the anime is still lots of fun, being an engaging story with decent basketball knowledge. This video was a great look at it.

Slam dunk is popular a anime in the Philippines and basketball is popular too so kids like me in the late 19s and 20s early in the Philippines who loves anime or basketball LOVE this show
Me phil i love slamdunk
just seeing some of these frames made me laugh out loud. I'm not even done watching your video and I've already decided I'm watching it. I heard of the series through dragonball, being that one of my favorite animators from that show worked on this series, so I assumed it was like any other sports anime and lost interest lol.
what a coincidence, I started reading it last week and I love it! Completely agree with you
I used to collect artworks for Slam Dunk, Captain Tsubasa and Dragon Ball as a Kid ! Brings me Nostalgia whenever I watch these anime ! My Childhood Love
This anime made my childhood and I would like to see a reanimation of this more fluid and a more detailed version
Takehiko Inoue is an amazing artist. His work here drew me into the story so much. Love this manga series!
This anime deserves a reboot
It deserved a continuation
Needs a second life like hunter x hunter.
I would love to see Slam Dunk get the HxH 11 and David Pro JoJo trearment
Imagine an SD remake made by Bones or David Productions...
No ... Just rerun it
Nah it doesn't the new art style of anime would ruin it. 90s style is unique and can't be done again
It does now
@@JoEs_Do9 there is no point of rerunning
Nobody really watch tv anymore
I don't even like anime, but your videos are so good, so I always watch them lol
Gimfigle496 I bet you like Ippo then
You bet I do. And what I read of Eyeshield and Initial D before unfortunately putting them on backlog was great. Joe was great as well.
Just finished it after watching ur review...
Haikyuu used to be my fav sports anime now it's slamdunk ....
Hey, Should I watch Slam dunk with English voice or Japanese voice ??
@@gaurav3290 I would say watch it in Japanese...but the English dub is pretty decent too
my fav. anime, i've watched it over 10 times!
Just something about slam dunk cowboy bebop and neon genesis and berserk is just so good idk if it’s the art style or sum it’s just so good
Thank you so much for this one! Laughing my ass off.
this series is an all time fave. sakuragi's growth is class
Great video!
This is a top 5 manga for me and I don't know dick about basketball, seen you're also a fan of patlabor I'd love to see you talk up another one of my all time favourites, great video.
I want to get into this because of the art, and how the protag reminds me of Bouya from Crows, and how people described that manga as Slam Dunk minus the basketball.
and the ending is fucking awesome. the manga ending.
But kinda sad
Slam dunk is the haikyu of basketball. I love basketball and I'm so glad there's a manga that actually uses real stuff unlike Kuroko
Yowamushi Pedal is also very similar but it's about road racing with bicycles.
Not just because the anime is good but because Sakuragi is lovable that you will get drawn to him easily. He's funny that the whole story is not boring to watch and the rivalry with Rukawa is funny too
And the fact that I'm a woman whose not into sports specifically Basketball but these made me watch basketball just to see their basketball moves in reality
I'm not a big basket ball fan but Slam Dunk is my second favorite anime of all time
Inoue is an absolute genius. Slam Dunk and Vagabond are absolute masterpieces with compelling stories and breathtaking art and pacing.
Masterpiece.
great video
I love Slam Dunk! I need to watch the anime, I only ever read the manga. It has wonderful character dynamics, humour, sad moments, and it's all-around great at investing the reader.
And unlike you tho, i don't mind sport mangas, especially about subject that i like like soccer, it takes me much courage to go into Slam Dunk and just like you, it changed my mind completely after finished reading it. One could say that it's an unbelievable experience and i'm glad to have read it. :')
I don't like basketball but this series is awesome.
Oh please, watch Ippo, please watch Hajime no Ippo, watch it, if you liked slam dunk then you'll love Ippo, you basically just describe the story beats of Ippo, watch Ippo, watch it now,
Duncan Smith exactly. Love Hajime no Ippo and Ashita No Joe
THIS.
Even after finishing the anime and the manga, I actually grew to love basketball even more and decided to go and learn more about it.
The thumbnail for this was beautiful
Another great video, man! Hey, did you know any soccer/football manga/animation series that is similar to Slam Dunk?
Hajime no Ippo has a similar way of introducing the sport of boxing to people and having a pretty good story and awesome fight scenes. definitely worth a watch!
Mahogany Black Yes
Diamond no ace is still the most similar to slam dunk
Slam dunk was a childhood favorite 😭😭😭
I'd recommend Rookies, a great delinquent basketball Manga, and of course Baby Steps, one of the greatest sports anime.
This is the bible of all asian basketball player.
As a asian I can tell you that.
I’m thinking that this is gonna be my first sports anime
Just one advice, read the manga, the anime just adapted half the story!
Then when you're done go read the Mangaka's best work Vagabond
I'd say 4/5 of the story. The interhigh tournament is pretty short.
Jose Colella
Ironically I feel like the manga conveys more movement than the anime did. Akin to what this Kotaku article says about One Punch Man anime vs manga.
kotaku.com/one-punch-man-shows-why-manga-will-always-matter-1739993533
The interhigh tournament is 8 books out of 31...almost 1/3
I'm waiting for Vagabond to end to begin reading it...I think I'll have to wait a long time
similar to captain tsubasa and eye shield21, I have no interest on sports but the manga/animes made me super interested on trying soccer and football.
The same could be said about Ashita no Joe,more or less.
Ashita no Joe ain't really about boxing as much though. It's more similar to Hajime no Ippo.
Maloolz Doesn't matter. It is still a sports anime. Better than Ippo in a lot of ways. Even Hajime No Ippo is influenced by Ashita No Joe/Ashita No Joe 2
I just finished reading the Slam Dunk manga like last month, loved it. Also does anyone know what song was used in the credits?
Its music from the anime
as has been said, down to earth, and actually basketball related, not battle shonen with basketball theme, also, I am about as unfit and unwilling to play sports as it gets yet i loved it
Pretty top tier
God bless u
Im not a fan of basketball at all but this anime is one of my favorite. Probably the funniest along GTO or Gintama.
Come on and SLAM! And welcome to the DUNK!
..
Wait hold on.
Great vid Bit! More frequent videos and you try something new! Those patron bucks are proving to be money well spent :-)
Welcome to the Space jam
You would love Hajime No Ippo - The Fighting. It's great for similar reasons to Slam Dunk.
You should definitely check out Eyeshield 21.
It's pretty damn good.
Hey there! You thinking of making a review (or 'your next favourite') with all the Yakuza games?
2019? Me 🙋🏻♀️
If you love and play basketball, you actually come to appreciate Slam Dunk more. Sakuragi had such a great development.
An example of the manga being better than the anime, but the anime is still lots of fun, being an engaging story with decent basketball knowledge. This video was a great look at it.
If there's a Zone, I'm in.
