- Based on the acclaimed book of the same name by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman, HORROR NOIRE takes a critical look at a century of genre films that by turns utilized, caricatured, exploited, sidelined, and embraced both black filmmakers and black audiences.
Featuring interviews with Ernest Dickerson (Bones), Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), Jordan Peele (Us), Tina Mabry (Mississippi Damned), Tony Todd (Candyman), Paula Jai Parker (Tales from the Hood), Tananarive Due (My Soul to Keep), and Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman.

Did y’all ever watch Night of the Living Dead the main character is black and a badass, and that movie is hella old
I've seen it and it wasn't fair that he got confused for a zombie and got shot dead. A warrior like that deserves praises and honor, not a bullet to the head.
@@sarahhenry5788 What are you talking about fair? It wasn't fair they wrote it that way?
I remember the Mist where they do a suicide pact just before the military comes in to clean up.
Heroes are overrated no matter who plays them. I don't care who is the hero or villain, skin color, gender, whatever. It doesn't make me treat actual people differently.
@@Torvar you are missing the point. When they tested movies the test crowd (white back then) wanted the black guy to die cause they didnt want to see a black person as the hero. THAT is the point. Your point has nothing to do with what she is trying to express, im not sure why 2 ppl liked what you had to say either, as it doesnt correlate at all to her point.
@@sarahhenry5788 please read my comment to the other guy you were talking to in this thread
@@whitealliance9540 When a hero dies, in any way possible I find it funny, because it is so unexpected.
Looking at the skin color and deciding what should be done is the problem.
If the viewers wanted an outcome based on skin color they are wrong.
If you want an outcome based on skin color, you are wrong.
If you ignore skin color and focus on the story, I enjoy it when any protagonist dies, regardless of skin color.
She said, "A warrior like that deserves praises and honor, not a bullet to the head."
The best heroes get all 3.
From George Carlin:
"It's always people who've told us to live together in harmony and try to love one another. Jesus, Gandhi, Lincoln, John Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, John Lennon, they all said, "Try to live together peacefully." BAM! Right in the f'ing head."
A bullet didn't remove their contributions to society. It does nothing to hurt the praise and honor.

Then you would have my childhood experience. They never took our shiit seriously which took me out of the good horror vibe many years before it should have. I saw texas chainsaw when i was like 14 and was pissed that ppl found this shiit scary but brushed off our horror movies. I wasnt scared at much anything for years after seeing Candyman and being the only one who liked it.

Yup one of the best horrors and one of the only ones of that time where they actually allowed the brother to survive. Didn't expect that. The 80's was the best time for those gory cult horrors. J.D's Revenge (1976) is another great one as well. But it was still RARE when the black person survived.

This documentary was excellent! The entire history of Black horror stars, films, and creators detailed and credited.
Night Of The Living Dead is my favorite horror film of all time. The original from the 60's yes.
I never noticed it as a little kids but now I see that blacks did have a certain roll in horror movies. I’m a huge horror fan and I wish I was born in the era of slasher films instead of the supernatural and gore we have today.
Look up interviews from past horror movies and you noticed that it was an insider joke to ask a black actor if in this movie “ the brother” lives. If I’m not mistaken the first horror movie in which a black actor had a significant role and survived was Halloween resurrection ( huge Myers fan here!!). I’ll be looking forward to this.
Or it’s just their way of looking at things.
Look at the cast of empire everyone is a black stereotype and black people(mostly ) love it.
Also look at the kill count how many white people die compared to blackpeople?
Then think about this , how many asains, Latinos , Jews etc , have died in an American horror film?
How many black people appear in moves made by those other races?
How many black horror directors exist and why didn’t you see their movies if you knew they existed?
Do you think that you might be in the minority of black people that like horror movies ? If not then ask you family to watch some scare shit.
my family said “hell no “ .
You can't talk about black horror movies without discussing Petey Wheatstraw the Devil's Son In Law,which,in my opinion is one of the greatest! I became friends with Rudy Ray Moore, and over a wonderful dinner one night, he regaled me with stories of the production, and how Jimmy Lynch [another genius who doesn't get the credit he so deserves] did all of the makeups and spfx work by himself!!! I loooooove these movies that these guys made, they had no budgets, but ALOT of creativity and it shows on the screen...How I wish they could have made more and had more success!!!
And,Id like to add that Im totally stoked for this film, its about time we had something like this!
I'm surprised I have never heard of this before. This looks super interesting.
Fuck this is amazing, I love seeing ideas that have been parodied and talked about for so long being tackled in a serious academic manner. :D

Like Voodoo, zombies, witches, etc. But one thing they should have mentioned is I think Michael Jackson Thriller and Ghost put Black Horror on the Map in the 80's and beyond

Until the Jews condition the Blacks to the point that race war starts
@HorrorFan 1988 oh no
Um Friday the 13th NEVER had a black character die first...
In the 2010 remake the black dude was the 9th (10th if you count the intro) to go...
Even when it’s not horror the black dude isn’t the first to go, like Jurassic Park, which had some random goon. A black dude was the last to die...
There’s also Get Out where the main character survives it all (it’s not uncommon for the main character to get killed off in thrillers)
Get Out was made by a black guy. Also Friday the 13th not having that doesn’t mean a thing. The Token Minority in and before that time was very real. There’s enough films to juxtapose against the earlier F13 movies
part 5 a black kid was one of the main characters and his dad was also portrayed as likable (like most black people in modern movies)
Imagine your own race being that petty
These are 3 films... out of how many thousands of horror films? Lmfao

In the Friday the 13th example, that guy wasn’t actually the first to die in the film. In fact, his little brother, who is black, actually saved the protagonist and was a hero and a survivor. Some horror movies sure, black people may have died first, but this wasn’t the same very every horro movie
Captain Relyk Don’t think they said it was in every Horror movie that they would die.
They used a clip from Friday the 13yh and I just wanted to clarify that the film isn’t racist. Was there a history of racism in horror movies? Absolutely! I just wanted to say Friday the 13th wasn’t one of those racist horror movies, just like there are probably cartoons that weren’t racist back before 1950s
Captain Relyk I think they might have used it as an example of a black man dying first. Although that might not be the case. I agree that just because a it showed an African American dying first doesn’t make it racist. Some people probably treated it as a movie trope.
They actually mentioned that in the documentary. They said that it may feel that way but it's simply not the case. They even gave some examples. I just got done watching it lol.
name one where the black guy dies first, I watch all Friday the 13ths none of them dyed first and in every single movie post 70s ive seen blacks are portrayed in the most positive way.
I'm not even a horror fan, but this looks goooooood!

I’m trying to figure out why people who isn’t black or even part black is commenting and hating on the shit. If you don’t like this documentary then why are y’all even on the video commenting below. I don’t get it. Don’t like it, don’t watch it. Im personally not into anime but I don’t make it a mission to watch videos of it on CZcams and comment something bad.
It's an ad preceding a youtube video I watched. It was an ad for Horror Noire with a black woman commenting on how racist the horror industry has been toward people like her. I honestly hear this victimhood BS day in day out and was sick of it 4 years ago. But they just keep going. So I came in to voice how I disagree. How many "white men were horrible" documentaries can we stomach? Is that just black peoples' favorite past time now is creating and watching shows that cast white people in a bad light? Because that's how it seems....... So hip to hate whites lately. What I'm getting at this documentary is bordering on racism.

And you have a problem with this, now?
Those black actors volunteered to play their roles, you'd think the story would be different if they didn't.
Damian9303 Yes but sometimes black people want the main role in a horror movie where they don’t die. The amount of movies where the black supporting character dies first is disproportionate to the amount of movies where they are the main character

In Land of the Dead the lead zombie is black to suggest the zombies have become the good guys. Romero always understood the aspects of race in horror that this documentary is talking about and subverted them.

Slasher McGirk IQ doesn’t equate to intelligence, it’s just a benchmark. So to say dumbest is a dumb thing to say, and literally had no reason being typed.
Slasher McGirk - I think your comment is a reason why black people “self-pity” as you say. I’d be down too if I had people like you saying stuff like that to me, it’s unnecessary and uncalled for.
@@xtcaudio White people get the most racial hate of any racial group. So don't come crying to me about how black people are "down". Also, yes IQ does equate to intelligence. That's why it's called the "intelligence" quotient. It's a culture blind intelligence test that sub-Saharan blacks do abysmally at compared to other racial groups. Blacks test significantly worse on IQ tests and academic standardized tests. Look up "SAT gap problem" and "IQ by racial demographic".

Tales of the hood was a GAME CHANGER
As a black person I only have to say one thing about this.
If someone representing a popular movie company of some sort asked me if I would like to play in a movie as the role of someone who dies before any other character in the cast first, I would be EXCITED to take that role. I don't really think any black actor that has played the role of a character that has died first ever complained about anything. They're ACTING, in a movie, and getting PAID. Hell, you can ask me to play numerous roles of a black person who dies first all the time and i'll still take it. And after all, you don't HAVE to be in a movie. They signed up for it anyways. Maybe the general thought of black people dying first has been a common thing, and it can come out to some people as "racist" or it shows that movie companies just wanna see black people die, but i honestly think this isn't something that needs to be documented.
When I saw this ad play before one of my videos a while back it caught my attention, and I had to say something about it.
