- Since the late 70s, Dave Gregory, along with Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding as the classic XTC line-up, has influenced countless other musicians.
Dave graciously spent time with us talking about early piano lessons, saving up for his first guitar, school bands, prog rock, focusing on the art rather than the tools early on, delivery driving and then how he finally landed the XTC gig.
Following that we spoke about life on the road and in the studio with XTC, Andy's struggle with stage performance and tour-life, and the eventual disintegration of the band in that form.
Enjoy.
Dave Gregory is simply the most humble, modest and charming bloke. A truly superb guitarist whose contribution to the XTC sound was immense.
Humble, modest and charming, also elements of the XTC song craft. Fascinating how the personality traits of the members translated so well artistically and creatively in their music.
Mr. Moulding's + Mr. Gregory's sense for melody + Mr. Partidge's liking for edgyness = one of the best bands ever.
Agree 100%
@@whatgoeson2201 So true. They never wrote a bad song NEVER
I’m a 22 year old Mailman in Arizona and I blast XTC daily whilst delivering. My 1st
introduction to them was “Reel by Reel” Live in Paris79 version. And I knew right then they became my favorite band for life. Even have a Tattoo portrait of Andy on my wrist. 🎸
You're living the dream right now, my friend!!! All the best from Lockdown London.
You're a serious fan!
Good on you man!
Good for you Isaac! To know that young people are discovering XTC warms the heart.
Such a loveable guy. I loved hearing the stories about the first guitar 🎸 and those early days. Thanks guys.
Thanks for this. With respect to guitars and the uniqueness of a particular guitar choice. selecting a Rickenbacker 12-string and making a unique sound with such an iconic guitar is a great, great example. Dave's Ricky 12 string sound is truly unique, and nobody seems to appreciate that.
Loving XTC’s second life on CZcams!! So much out there to devour!
What a sweet, gentle and unassuming man❤
All elements of the music and story telling that is XTC. Andy and Colin as well, very sincere while incredibly creative.
One of the few upsides of this pandemic is listening to the podcasts that Dave Gregory has contributed too in the last year or so.
What a wonderful, humble interviewee he is.
What a marvelous interview, I enjoyed enjoy second of it! Mr. Gregory's affable demeanor in relating all this memorabilia only added to the enjoyment. Great work, guys!
Perceptive questions, beautifully answered.Thank you so much for this.Dave Gregory is the great colourist for great songwriters.Want to stand you all a pint.
Many thanks for the comment, Paul. The pint is much appreciated! :)
I’m always interested to hear what Dave has to say. Always honest in his opinion. Just so interesting to get his take on the XTC years.
Right? So open and honest, so insightful and generous. A highlight for us without doubt!!!!
Dave says the last live XTC show in San Diego was like Beatlemania, they went over so well.
I was there. It was!
Thank you Mister Gregory, For everything. And Thank you guys. Informative and a great listen.
Thanks so much for listening/ watching!!
Dave Gregory is one of the greatest guitarists for one of the greatest, most underappreciated bands in rock history. Period.
I’ve watched every interview of Dave G. that I’ve been lucky enough to find (to my delight: as of late, there have been more of them than usual on YT). I even had the amazing luck of getting to speak with him on a radio show once. He’s one of my favorite musicians on earth. I just wanted to tell you that this has been my favorite interview of his that I’ve seen because this one covers both his music and his playing and functioning within a band in an uncharacteristically in-depth way that only other musicians could know how to conduct. And the bonus has been that there’s also a lot of in-depth discussion about his GEAR and guitars in general, which I personally dearly love equally. Normally, his interviews have focused on more or less strictly one or the other, with relatively surface-scratching discussion. This one was more like just some musician buds hangin’ and one of them just happens to be Dave (freakin’) Gregory!
So to sum up, thank you so very much for this intelligent, insightful, and absolutely delightful interview.
Good on the 3 of ya!
Thanks so much!!! Delighted to have been able to bring this interview to such appreciative people! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
This is incredibly fascinating. Could watch this forever.
So glad you liked it. More to come soon.
Great insightful interview. Thanks!
Dave is a gentleman and a great musician. I was lucky enough to have a quick chat with him after a Big Big Train concert a year ago. I'm probably the only regular visitor to his 'guitarganouts' website - long since abandoned - but a great read.
Genuinely an old school gent! Thanks for your thoughts :)
I too am a regular reader! As you say, a great read and a great source of knowledge of vintage guitars.
Korea has made some great guitars. My. favourite electric right now is a Danelectro 59 reissue. It cost little, is extremely playable, and sounds fantastic.
Excellent!
Wow, around 1:20:00 Dave actually does a little bit of an Andy impression...usually it's the other way around!
Good to hear so much from him! :D
That was a good 1:56 of my life. Good episode guys. Great insights from Dave Gregory...
Thanks! Just before it we resolved we had to cut off at an hour.... ha ha ha ha. Iron resolve!
Love Dave's stories, great guitarist and down to earth too!:-)
All round great chap!
@@whatgoeson2201 he really is, like wow! i knew that a long time ago, now what about colin! he's not so talkative tho, is he, he would be the 'quiet beatle', but his songs really say all that need be said, i suppose!
I'm so happy to have seen this, a big chunk of the XTC puzzle, from the point of view of this amazing guitarist and all-round good guy obviously
What a lovely guy. Great interview.
This is such a good interview! Thank you.
Thank YOU for the kind words! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
wow! flippin' awesome!! i'm so glad i stumbled into this! the xtc , is the greatest band like, ever, yo~
Share with all yo friends!!!!
@@whatgoeson2201 heck yeah, man: straightaway, i'm-on-that then~ thanks, man:: oops, looks like we're workin' with a little bit-of-a-delay, yeah? ha ha~
the blur, are also perhaps one of the greatest as well, i might hasten to add, ha ha~
Such a great interview. Such a great musician. Such a lovely man. Rename this podcast, ' Dreams and Passion' - kind of sums the whole thing up. Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed it.
Great interview, chaps. Looking good Dave. I’ll buy your album!
Amen to that!!
XTC 4 life
XTC's George Harrison - an essential component.
I certainly never confused Dave and Andy's solos. No way~! And I shouldn't, I'm XTC's biggest fan ever - well in the Netherlands at least :)
very friendly and interesting chap
5:02 guitar solos on XTC songs were almost always too short for my liking. They were always so good that I wanted more.
"You're not switching that thing on in this house, boy".
Ha ha ha ha. Can identify?! :)
Dave I remember hearing you play on your first ever work with XTC .....a radio session for BBC Andy Peebles in early 79 when he played one track every night for four nights ....reworked songs from white music and GO2 ......never heard them since but if you’ve kept a copy put them on CZcams please I’d love to hear them again.....spinning top and life is good in the greenhouse I can remember being bowled over by ......maybe heatwave was another .....cant remember the last one though.....never seen them anywhere since though. Lovely interview.
Yessss!
@@whatgoeson2201 yeah:: hey, DAVE~ why not ring up andy, and see if he wouldn't mind if you sort of lay-that-on-us, man~ C'MON, MAN~ you guys're the greatest:: y'don't owe us anything, obviously, but at least, y'might-do-THIS~
HAHA~~~ of course maybe andy's the 'go-to'-guy, yeah?> sorry, mate~
Put me down for a copy of your solo LP, Dave. DO IT !! "Idaho" 🤠
Amen to THAT!!!!
Sad to hear how it ended with him and the band (read: Andy). Wish he and Colin would do something together at least.
without andy? i think that's not gonna-work-for-me, mate~ ha ha~
always great to hear Dave - he is a wonderful chap and a talented musician. The interviewer with the beard was a bit odd, rambling and took up too much narrative space but that's just one opinion. He seemed to really not understand XTC well with his comparisons.
They were always adored in the States by a rabid group of fans. I always thought they were
the closest thing to a McCartney/Lennon/Harrison team to ever come out of the UK.
But it seemed like they were cast aside, rejected, or at the very least overlooked in the UK.
Stories of them being spit on, etc. It's nice to see them finally get props in their own homeland.
I do wish XTC could somehow get back together to record again.
I don’t think you’re alone in that wish!! :)
@@whatgoeson2201 well, y'know... we-all-wanna-change-the-world, man~
Too bad Andy doesn't desire to get back with Dave and Colin. I'm guessing with his neurosis, he's possibly afraid of failure after his stunning career or maybe he's ashamed of the way he treated his mates towards the end. Would travel across the globe to see a reunion. Nice to see that Colin and Terry did some work together. I wonder if Colin approached Dave to play on TC&I. That would have been awesome. Dave was with Tin Spirits at the time (I think) so maybe he was too busy. It's not too late Andy. Make some new music with your mates!
Every good/great(danceable)pop song must have a good/great riff, and Dave Gregory supplied XTC with plenty of them. That said, it would be fun to take a number of songs by the band and guess who came up with the riff--Partridge or Gregory's? A few examples might be: the riff on 'Knuckles Down' or 'Playground' ' I can earn enough for us.'
Hey guys, honest question here: what's the best way to contact Dave Gregory? I really want to see if it's possible to hire him to record some guitars for a project some friends built.
Dave looks young.
Dude, he looks younger.
Would have loved to have seen him in Colin's and Terry's TC and I....What a band that would have been !....Maybe in XTC just to much talent in one group.
Sometimes, it's probably better not to know. Tantalising, but that's often the case. ~Fantasy is always able to out-strip reality because there are no constraints!!
I own his Fender Bronco
Really? That's awesome. How did you get it?
And in the beano ?
I'm curious what XTC stuff some find to sound like The Police lol
well? how about the man-who-sailed-around-his-soul, y'know, from east-to-west, from pole-to-pole, y'know,
with ego as his drunken captain, and greed: the mutineer, had trapp'd-all-reason-in-the-hold, right?
officer blue? we know stew really loves the things-they-do::
The departure of Dave just reinforces to me that Andy was a bully.
Make a new record please.
