    I am comparing a Martin D-42 to a Motion TD-107.
    Both guitars are miced exactly the same way:
    Same distance to the mic; same angle to the neck; same height, same room temperature; same humidity; same dude playing the songs; same gain on the pre-amp; same output level of the track used in the DAW, same swea... OOPS, DIFFERENT SWEATER!11!!
    What do you listen to when testing guitars? What are the differences in sound? Close your eyes, and give it a test!
    **Preferably listen to it on decent speakers, or headphones**

    I think something important to note here too, and something I had to learn a long time ago, is that even though the Martin's tone is way better, he makes that Motion sounds incredible. A well practiced guitarist can make a $100 guitar sound like a $5000 guitar and an inexperienced guitarist can make a $5000 guitar sound like a $100.

      I agree Frank the Martin is just a bit fuller sounding otherwise not enough difference to justify the cost !! If he can get that close to a Martin for $150 then a $250 or $300 dollar cheaper brand would sound just as full . I spent $170 on my Kramer Baretta re-issue and after a set-up its the best feeling sounding electric I have ever had . I have had ESP , Fenders , PRS , Gibsons all were thousands of dollars and the Kramer I have now beats them all !! Go play at a store before you buy any brand and compare prices . Sometimes your strings , picks , picking style , amp can all make a difference . But today you can get top quality for $300 or less ! Do your research is my advice ..

      WarpRulez I have played for 30+ yrs. and cannot answer that lol A guitar that plays everything you tell it to. The only thing that justifies that kinda money would be a Collectors guitar something the Beatles or Elvis used or Claptons first guitar ? But those kinda things cost way ,way more then 4 or 5 grand anyways ! Im a Metal / Shred player so maybe a very competent Jazz or Classical guitarist would spend that kinda money . I can/have made great sounds come out of cheap equipment I had no choice !

      sweliam1 Interesting. Do you care to expand on your experiences with cheap guitars in the studio?

    • @sweliam1
      @sweliam1 Před 7 lety +47

      Tyler Mitchell Absolutely! My experience as a sound engineer (predominantly in the studio) is that cheaper guitars tend to sound very flat and lifeless trough professional-grade microphones. Albeit that's arguably something that only a select amount of dedicated listeners will hear. However, as an engineer, it is easier to work with more expensive acoustic guitars as they are more harmonically rich and gives me more control over the sound. Oftentimes I'm able to shape the sound of a nicer guitar more without it sounding unnatural, which is unfortunate given that cheaper ones tend to need such correction the most. No matter what type of sound I'm after, it is more often than not achievable with, say, a nice high-end dreadnought. I rarely feel the same about one of lesser quality. In the end, the actual consequences of this is that cheaper acoustic guitars simply don't fit most mixes as good since they tend to have a very distinct sound (for better or worse - often worse) that is not easily manipulated. That is also the reason why the differences would remain even after processing. Perhaps even become more apparent.

      What you're referring to is sound synthesis. That is done separately from recording/mixing, by completely different people with completely different skill sets. No engineer on the planet is going to go through all of that effort to make a guitar sound like a piano, they'll just record a piano... I'm not sure what you're getting at, but it sounds wholly inefficient. Also, as has been mentioned... You can do whatever you want to a crappy sounding guitar, it's still going to sound like crap.

    A good melody is still a good melody even on less expensive gear. A Martin is an investment and awesome to own but you wouldn't take it to a campfire on a humid night. It's all about the right tool for the job. Martin for recording and the other one for playing at parties. The average music fan would not notice a difference. We forget as musicians that most music fans are not cork sniffing guitar snobs. Only us guitar players look at the name on the headstock to everyone else they are both acoustic guitars. Peace

      While I agree that you would not take a Martin to a campfire type setting, I absolutely agree that most people wouldn't notice the difference between these guitars. In the campfire setting, that may be the case, anywhere else and a good majority of people will be able to tell.

I believe there is a very noticeable difference between each brand and price range. Even more so, I tried out 4 different HD 28's at the shop that day. EACH one had their own unique sound. Martin is never ever worth the money for many many years. Seagull and the whole Godin company is a great example for a good cost effectiveness. If you are serious, you can not trust companies like Martin, Taylor and Takamine. Go to the next local shop and try some smaller names.

      Ole Sperber Martin, Taylor, and Takamine are all fine instruments, and to be sure you're somewhat paying for brand power, bt that doesn't mean you're getting a bad guitar. If you have 5k to drop on a guitar go ahead, if not, you can find great stuff for much cheaper.

    • @OliverSperber
      @OliverSperber Před 7 lety +5

      I almost agree with you. "All fine instruments" is not right. 1k for a machine-made Martin is not the same as 1k for a handbuild Godin or Seagull guitar. Of course you are paying for the brand.

      I traded a $1500 Gibson for a $650 La Patrie and $800 Simon and Patrick (Both made by Godin) and they both sound far better than the Gibson. Just because the materials cost more and the name is bigger, doesn't make the guitar sound any better. Besides that, 2 instruments of the of same production line will sound different.

      Sound isn't the only thing that makes a difference when playing though. A more expensive guitar is going to be much more comfortable to play, look nicer, be made with higher quality parts (bridge, frets, wood, etc.), and just generally be a better instrument. Honestly, a lot of the time it doesn't even necessarily matter how great the guitar sounds since you can really fine tune your sound when you're recording and micing it up. Just my $.02 as a guitarist.

      That's only true if you don't know if you will follow through with learning.....otherwise I'd suggest anyone serious about learning, should just get a good guitar from the start if they can afford it. The better sound will make playing more enjoyable, which gives even more incentive to learn more. Of course, the problem of durability comes in. Not everyone has perfect climate control nor do people generally want to bother with the upkeep and repairs of solid wood instruments. I don't think people need $5000 guitars, $300-$500 range has some pretty good guitars.

      Really, though, a well-built and proportioned guitar is so much easier to play it's always going to be worth paying more - not 5,000 for sure - on order to reach one's full potential. Plus there is a decent sound difference.

    • @MalnutritionUSA
      @MalnutritionUSA Před 8 lety +1

      This is really the most important factor imo, sound is very important but once you get into a higher price range they will all sound pretty good for the most part. The biggest difference I notice when playing my $400 fender acoustic vs a $700-$800 Taylor or Martin is immense. Playing them is like a dream, which in turn really helps your sound, being able to comfortably play chord progressions, fingerpicking, technical picking etc.
      I played a buddies Taylor that was valued a little over $3000, and he had gotten it professionally set up. The action was insane and you could probably play it with 1 hand on the neck. We had the same gauge strings on, and I couldn't play hardly any kind of solo on my guitar, on his I could rip full solos I normally had to play on my electric guitars.
      I bought my guitar based on features, fender brand name, inboard tuner, shape, color etc. I never played it before I bought it, and it was a huge mistake. The guitar is really nice and a quality instrument, but there were other guitars in the same or similar price range that are wayy better. If anyone's reading this about to buy an acoustic, go PLAY it, then play other guitars in your range, the best one for you will call out to you.

    • @ChaplainDMK
      @ChaplainDMK Před 8 lety

      You can hear (I think I did at least) that as well, with the faster licks sometimes having a few slightly muted notes. It also feels like the Martin never had strings hit the frets or anything like that. Generally it just soudns like the Martin is way way way better "set up" than the Motion.
      Though a lot of this could also be down to him probably using the Martin more than the Motion.

    Just something to add, tone in the fingers/in the money argument aside. As someone who has been on all ends of both the live and recording scene, I can say pretty confidently that compression, reverb, and the mic chosen make a huge amount of difference to the sound quality of a recording. These items can bring life to what would be classified as a “cheap” guitar if they’re any good, and he’s using a neumann mic for the recording which is a pretty good sign to me. On that note, I’d love to hear a comparison of two acoustics using onboard electronics through a DI. Thanks Paul, love the content, and as a working musician and engineer I find myself always coming back to your channel to learn more!

    Excellent video! The Martin definitely had a ‘fuller’ sound, somehow richer and more balanced across its tonal range - the bass, mids and trebles sat with each other with less contrast. It also seemed the Martin had a less buzzy sound with better intonation across the neck.
    But did those slight improvements sell me, and was it worth the price difference? No. Frankly, no. Both guitars sounded great, and for the differences (I can’t speak to playability, only sound) I just do not see $4000 plus difference in them. I actually own a cheap Jay Turner semi that I got off Amazon for about $112 years ago, and having played for 30 plus years and played both cheap and expensive guitars, its one of the sweetest playing, and nicest sounding guitars I’ve ever played. As guitarists, we all know that price tags are often based on the name on the headstock, and, while materials and build quality do make a difference, it’s often not a value difference reflected by the price tag.
    Excellent job, Paul. I really enjoyed this, thanks.
