  • I'm back! Sorry it's been so long. I've been working on many other things, and only just had a chance to do some work on my models! The Capitol Limited/California Zephyr project is finally complete! Interiors painted, lighted, figures fitted, and locomotives detailed.
    Enjoy!

    You are only missing the transitional sleeper/crew dorm between the sleepers and the baggage/engines, but I agree you should get the Material Handling Cars(MHCs) as well as the crew dorm I mentioned earlier. There was ,at one point, where the Capitol Limited(Amtrak train 29/30) had 6 to 8 MHCs.

    TOP WORK man...beautiful train overall! Phase III (and dare I say III "b") was a very clean scheme. I also treated my Athearn P42s to the same detail effects...in particular the black trimming around the inside of the headlight enclosures to simulate / give the look of a gasket / seal. My P42s feature the Ph III scheme with faded stripe that have varied pixellated dots designed to simulate a ripple effect of a waving banner / flag to the eye of stationary onlookers as the locomotive passed by.

    EMD F40PH also called the Pooch 40 served Amtrak from 1972 to 1995 it has since be replaced by the GE P42 DC also called The Genset these engines are on every Amtrak train from The Builder to the Zephyr.

    • @iliketrains839

      This is incorrect, the Pooch nickname was for the GE P30ch and also they weren't replaced by the GE Genesis, they were replaced by the EMD F40PH

    Hey there, thanks - glad you like it! Yes, the interior details are really fiddly. I actually used very small pieces of masking tape on every single seat on the whole train. Took about 3 days of evenings to do the whole thing - I had a pretty quick production line rolling! Once the base color was down, I painted each of the seats (again, masked, it may not seem like it, but it saves loads of time) and then I painted the armrests, and anti-macassars. Worth the effort, I think!!

    I love the Amtrak Superliners and Viewliners/Amfleet IIs long distance "hotel" trains with the sleepers, diners, and lounges. The Superliner sightseeing lounge/lounge-cafe are beautiful cars. On a long two day trip through the mountain passes they are a treat, you won't find a better seat to watch the scenery anywhere. Nice consist order too, after the loco the baggage car if there is one, sleepers the first behind the loco being transition sleeper/dorm if there is one, diner, lounge, then coaches with the baggage coach first behind the lounge. The Coast Starlight with the Parlor car in front of the diner after the sleepers. Amtrak likes to use the diner as a gate to the first class sleepers. Are you using Kato or Bachmann EZ track. and of what radius curves for the Superliners?

    I actually have no idea! Fortunately, LEDs like these don't draw too much current, unlike incandescent bulbs. That's why most new models have LED lighting kits. The only thing they change is that they make the trains *much* heavier - especially when you're running consists of 8 cars!

    StreamlinedTrains, excellent job! The white "towels" on the seats are called "Anti-macassars". Way back in the day men used Macassar oil for their hair, which resulted in railway car seats being stained. Hence, the use of those cloths to protect the seats from hair oil. How did you paint yours so nice and straight? I find it challenging.

  • @streamlinedtrains
    @streamlinedtrains  Před 11 lety

    Hi! Right, yes, Walthers do make the El Capitan coach, but unfortunately only Phase I and II. I've read that they don't plan to make Phase III versions, since that would involve retooling... Well, perhaps I'll just buy one and paint it myself! Watch this space...

    Hopefully someone can help me with this. I'm just getting into model train building, been wanting to do it for awhile. Today I received my Phase 3 Walthers Amtrak Superliner Dining Car. The rest of my set is the KATO Phase 3 Superliner.
    I'm sure it's an easy fix, but, the Dining Car couplers do not match with the KATO Superliners. Is there a set of couplers that I can buy so I can mix KATO and WALTHERS cars. I really don't want my money to go to waste because I have two different types of cars.

    • @mikeingeorgia1
      @mikeingeorgia1 Před 2 lety +1

      You’ve probably already fixed it, but just in case you haven’t, I’d recommend buying the Kadee coupler height gauge. Then you’ll know for sure which cars should be adjusted and in which direction. You’ll definitely appreciate being compatible if you ever run your equipment on another layout such as a club’s.

    your two coaches and four baggage cars short of a consist I have seen Zephyr go up and down Soldier Summit for 26 years and your consist is incomplete. Amtrak and all heritage railroads have cars they hook to the train so it can travel the country non stop. first is the Baggage Car this car is behind the engine and stores the bags. in front of the baggage car and sometimes behind the train is the Railway Post Office Express Boxcars everything from reefers, express mail, packages, and classified cargo is transported in these boxcars. behind the baggage car is the RPO also called the Railway Post Office this is where the crew lives and where the mail is sorted. behind the RPO is the Boiler Dorm Generator this car provides power and steam to the coaches. behind the Boiler Dorm is the Transition Coach there are two on the train one up front and one on the rear they allow passage to the other cars. then the sleepers, then the lounge,, then the observation car, then the dinner car, and the coaches and the inspection car are on the rear with a transition car connecting them.
