As a punk myself who's also willing to dive into academia, Dexter is nothing short of inspiring.
He's not punk, selling out to big pharma and comply with the vax mandate is not punk. Then kicking out your band member for not participating in a unproven vax, for financial gain. He's a sell out and definitely not punk.

His insistence that band members should be vaccinated against potentially fatal diseases probably doesn't have much to do with politics or trying to prove that he's punk. He's been a successful performing artist long enough that he really has nothing to prove in that regard!
Remember kids: If you're not poor and stupid then you ain't punk!
One of the few celebrities who actually earned his degree and not given an "honorary" degree and a PhD at best.
Dont forget about Milo Aukerman of the Descendants and Greg Graffin of Bad Religion. The three lead singers of some of the best punk bands all have their Phds.

Brian May is an astrophysicist who literally worked with NASA on the New Horizons Pluto mission, and had two peer reviewed studies published and his thesis was 'A survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud'.
And that's how you know you got old: Dexter Holland is speaking to an audience where half the people have no idea who he is.

So many people in that crowd can’t even begin to appreciate the person speaking to them and it’s sad. That man is one of the greatest figures of the 90’s and has earned his place in history.
This just blows my mind. I remember being in 5th grade back in '95 listening to Smash on tape. Never would I think Dexter Holland would be giving a speech to a graduating class of doctors after earning his PhD himself at USC.

He was my childhood rock hero. I remember some stupid review of an album where the te reviewer basicly called the guys in the band dumb.
I wrote a letter to that magazine explaining that Dexter was a microbiologie student and some other not so nice things.
They looked it up and rectified it :D

A mí me sucede igual. Estoy orgulloso de Brian Keith Holland. Conocí el grupo en torno al año 2.000 y empecé a escucharlos más profundamente alrededor de 2.004 (año en el que empecé a escuchar música punk). Casualmente, al igual que Dexter, hice la carrera de biología motivado por la biología celular y molecular (él también es biólogo). Posteriormente, hice una maestría o máster en formación del profesorado en la especialidad de biología y geología y, actualmente, ando preparándome las oposiciones de profesor. Me siento muy identificado con él en el hecho de qué ambos adoramos la música punk y la biología :)

When I read about dr holland's degree, I was truly shocked. In a positive way of course. Most of the musicians do not have any uni education. And usually, you don't expect musicians to have one, especially punk-rockers and metalists. So to me, it was facinating, how versatile this man is. And I still can't get my head around this. Dude who sang in crazy taxi litterally has PhD.

This is just amazing. Anyone can do anything as long as they push towards what they want. No matter what your situation is. Knowing that one of the greatest bands that ever existed in the 90’s and currently has a singer/guitar player/songwriter as well multiple degrees?!?! It’s fascinating and I’m humble and appreciative To have kept them in my musical arsenal growing up. If I ever had the chance to shake this man’s hand would be one of the greatest honors ever. I have loved this band since I was a kid. Their music got me through so much growing up and I don’t know where I would be now and I can say that with all honesty. I don’t know if Dexter will ever see this, but all I want to say is I’m very proud of you dude.

I see alot comments on the current students not knowing who he is. Reflect, most ppl of our age do not know who The Kinks are. Time is relative and we tend to spawn the thinking to our time. Mind you the offspring, will and always will be, my fav band ever. Does not mean younger men and woman in age will know who is. He wrote a very good speech as he does with lyrics

I had no idea Dexter had a degree in science and I bet more then half of them had no idea who he was. The Offspring has to be in the top 10 best rock bands of the 90's along with Nirvana,Nine Inch Nails,SoundGarden,Alice In Chains,STP,Korn, Pearl Jam ,that's really about all the good bands from the 90's.

Maybe, the band is well known but the members aren't. They have a lot of casual listeners that like their hits but have no idea about who the members are. They don't have big personalities, so they don't stand out much, their music does

@@diogom9480 you are wrong their personalities are grand and Holland's bleached blonde hair make him an Icon of the 90s, their sound is very distinct, you can not know who Offspring is without knowing who Dexter or Noodles is is like not knowing that Cobain was in Nirvana. I just think that the "doctor" crowd are not very into their 90's punk rock music.
