What I've tried that usually works is try using steel wool. Use the correct size of Alan key to sort of push the wool into the stripped out portion of the hex. The way it works is that the wool helps by making the key fit the stripped hex a little better, but also because it's coarse, grabs onto whatever it can in the hex. Of course, be careful to keep it away from the pick-ups.
I'm building a 12 string electric cigar/shoe box thingy and the neck I ordered came with a gooched nut and a back bow. This has given me hope. Cheers Dave!
I may have goofed. Apparently it's not Gibson-sized, it's 9/36" or 8mm for your domestic viewers. I considered the steel wool trick but am glad I didn't go through with it now that I've actually found SOME detailed information on these old Kays. Thanks Davey!!
Dave - Alway good / fun information ! On your " Stripped Trussrod Nut Removal " video you mentioned that one might get ahold of you with ???? . I have a barrell / hex nut ( as in the video ) that is bottoming out during tightening . Can I remove it without getting myself in trouble with the truss rod itself . . . then either shorten the barrel by cutting off the bottom , or . . shim it up so that it will tighten further . Thanks for your help , and your sense of whimsy !
Hey Dave, I'm a machinist and have seen my fair share of those 'gooched' nuts and bolt heads :/ On the allen nuts, a torx driver of the right size usually works better than an extractor!!
I've had a lot of luck using the next size up TORX bit. You have to be gentle though, the torx bits are slightly brittle and if the nut is cross threaded it can snap off.
My barrel nut from my truss rod isn't striped yet, but it is seized up terribly. It won't turn in either direction. Liquid solvents aren't working yet and I've even released tension by removing the strings. This is on my Epiphone PR-100-12 (12 string acoustic) and the nut is in the headstock (truss rod is adjusted there, not inside at the neck-body joint). What can I do? I could probably treat the nut like it's striped and pull it out that way but all I need to do is loosen the truss rod just a little bit.
Thanks for making this video Dave, but I'm wondering what to do about the black rubber plug on an MIM standard. The rubber bit prevents the barrel-style nut from coming out all the way, so how should I go about removing the rubber piece?
What’s your opinion about a similar truss rod nut that won’t move at all in either direction? Even with the normal stuff everyone tries first. “Helping the neck”, penetrating oil, heat, that runaround.
I managed to take a slight bow out of a Epi Les Paul Custom with a T25 driver. Have you ever worked on one? I would like to replace the nut but they seem to be different. The nut seems to be encased in a shaft and I don't see any replacement information on line anywhere. Love your videos. Spent about 2 hours watching last night.
Hi Sir, please help me.I have an acoustic guitar i need to adjust its action but i saw the truss rod nut and i think its stripped. That is why 4mm and 5mm aren't working. I saw that their was nothing to grip the suitable screw driver tool. Is there any way to fix it because its an acoustic guitar. Thanks
Is this possible on a a dual action truss rod? I've got this exact problem & the neck I need to work on allegedly has a dual action rod. The barrel nut will move using the flat head screwdriver method but I haven't tried yet as the replacements not yet here & wanted to double check before it ends up with even more goochery.
Thanks, Dave. I've got a Larivee acoustic guitar with a very loose truss rod. I tightened it a bit too far clockwise and I fear it may have broken. Is this a situation where a luthier needs to remove the fretboard to replace the whole rod?
I have a Ibanez Bass guitar GSR 190 GIO, I removed the stripped nut, but I don't know if there is a new replacement. I read in some forums that the one that fender makes dont work, it something with inches and metric system. the thread and nut size is the issue. Could you please help me?
@davey4557 will it make a difference if ur truss is adjustable both ways? or will that just bum the neck? also where can u buy new ones of those "barrel nuts" and are they universal?
So, if that screws into the trus rod, and you turn it counter clockwise (as if you wanted to add relieve), at what point does it stop turning the trus rod and is starts being removed from the trus rod?
Hi Dave, I believe I broke the nut but the other way. May I send you a picture? I am talking about acoustic Epiphone. I put lighter strings and when I was adjusting TR something bad happened. I got this nut in my hands, tension of TR is ok, but I don't understand what happened and how am I supposed to do adjustments next time. S.O.S. Thank you for being here.
Put duct tape onthe end of screw driver. Sometimes the right wrench can mess up the nut. They make the nuts out of really cheap metal ,so it will be easy to remove if the threads get crossed on the truss rod.
Hey Davey, I have a Kay Vanguard with a 5/16" hex nut (Gibson-sized) nut that came to me stripped. How can I remove it without giving stewmacula any of my money?
Hi Dave! please reply with your email add. so I can send pictures of my guitar with the problem. Have a problem with my strat neck truss rod... too straight. No relief... I tried to adjust the truss rod CCW to loosen it. It's loose all the way till nothing seems holding it anymore but still the neck is deadflat straight... it's not broken cause I can tighten it in reverse (CW). what can you advice me to do... thanks in advance!
hi- i want to replace my truss rod nut -it it turning ok at present but i want to put in a new one,if it loosen it the whole way will it come off and then do i get screw on the new one --- thanks sean
Dave my hex truss rod nut on my Epiphone Zakk Wylde has stripped I can't adjust it at all now. I can't find any information at all on this at all can they be replaced on a Epiphone? Any help will be appreciated.
I sorta' buggered up one-not severely enough I couldn't Remove it, though. So I took it out and put it in a Vice, that I put those Magenetic Rubber Safety Grippers onto. Then I Hack-Sawed a Slot into the end, smoothed the edges with a Point-File, and Voila`-it could Still be turned-only with a Slot screw driver, from now on.
What I don't understand is that I was told that my stripped truss rod nut can't be replaced. Instead the whole truss rod needs to be yanked out. This is based on someones opinion who didn't observe my guitar upfront? Is this true as being the only choice I have? I don't understand why can I just take off the old nut and screw a new one on?
Hey Dave, StewMac.com Sells the Gripper Truss Rod Wreches. They are tapered Allen/Hex wrenches, and a similar idea to the tapered extractors/ EZ outs you showed on here. About 13 bucks CDN. Check it out!
Thats how I've managed it too. Epoxy resin on the largest wrench that fits has worked for me. Its particularly handy if its inside the soundhole of an acoustic and the nut doesnt have a deep enough hole to use an extractor. I dont think the screwdriver method is a good idea. It can split the nut leavin you in a worse mess.
It is more problematic when the truss rod is accessed through the soundhole. It seems such a bad design, going through the sound hole. Not bad - spiteful to the human race. As if the devil himself thought it up. I was about a hair's breath away from smashing my guitar. I just barely stopped myself. So, how to remove a nut through the sound hole? Do you think smash the top, burn the fretboard and then use the extractor?
" you can send me a message and i can give you my email address and you can send me a pic of the problem and ..i can reply with , don't upset me and bloody buy a decent new guitar " hehe

He who hasn't subscribed,,to Dave,,do so ,the man is a wealth of knowledge on guitars,,,and a nice bloke too boot!
I recently got a 5 string bass in a trade that i came to find out afterwards had a stripped truss nut. Thanks for the helpful video.
What a man! You might have just saved another guitar, thanks VERY much.
Thanks, buddy. Got mine out using your tips.

I'm going to give that a try next time.I use epoxy resin on the biggest key that fits. This works well but takes a lot of waiting. Thanks for that.
Thanks a ton! Tapered flat head worked for me. Took some patience but it slowly rose enough to be pulled out with need nose pliers. Thanks bro!
Glad it helped!
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff Do you think those Fender bullet nuts are better than what comes standard in Squier CXS models? Thanks again!
Super cool Dave. Thanks man. I have a Telecaster TexMex (mex made) so, wish me luck!
yeah... noted. I'll just pop this on my tele. At least it wasn't a waste. Thanks, man!
excellent

I didn't feel it break. It still turns, it just turns too freely both ways.

wow worth gold
You can also try T30 trox key for metric 4mm nuts. Mine has removed with ease
So, if that screws into the trus rod, and you turn it counter clockwise (as if you wanted to add relieve), at what point does it stop turning the trus rod and is starts being removed from the trus rod?
after a while it will unscrew and come out
yes it will come out if you unscrew it.
cool vid. thanx1
How much does a repair like this cost at a shop? I messed my trussrod nut and I need to add relief to my acoustic guitar
Hi, my ibanez jem has stripped rod, however its not like fender like you can replace the nut easily its binded into the rod.

Hey Dave
Does an Epiphone g400 have a removable trussrod nut?
what if ur truss rod is adjustable both ways? will this still work or will u just end up f***ing up your neck?
Where you can you get a Barrel Nut?
Hello may I ask where to buy the truss rod nut replacement?
Most places that sell guitar tools / parts have some. Even (sp)amazon has a few.
I want to install a bullet trussrod nut into my Mexican P Bass. Do I just loosen it till it comes out?
which way to turn it to undo it to take it out?
My feelings are hurt Dave. you didn't mention my method of using epoxy and a sacrificial allan wrench...
I just found out the nut is firmly attached (one peice) with the truss rod? Oh no/
What to do now?

So I have not gooched it yet LOL , but if I loosen the nut and keep turning it should just come out right ? I want to replace it I think it needs one.
not on a 2 way truss rod
