- Is the Nikon Z9 the best camera for sports photography? Pro Photos LA based out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana tested the Nikon Z9 shooting a college football game and provided an honest analysis based upon photos acquired by the Z9. Views can watch the Z9 settings on the video along with viewing still photos taken and cropped photos to see the focus accuracy.
Totally agree! I started my career in 1983 with Canon and the first Nikon I ever bought or used is the Nikon Z9! it is by far the best 35mm camera I have ever used for stills but what actually made me start to invest in Nikon was with the change over to mirrorless, I basically could choose any system but it was those Zs lenses that spoke to me better that Canons RF lenses. the icing on the cake is that my favourite EF lenses work fantastically with the Fringer adapter on the Z9.😎👍🏾🙏🏾
Wow... that was the best hands-on Z9 video I've seen. I'm sold on it! Also, great captures at the game. Bravo!
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching. The Z9 is a great camera!
@@prophotosla7784you’ve gotta come back with some more Z9 content brother🤙🏽
I will. Thanks.@@ItsJaeLaw
This is a great demonstration of the Z9 AF and AF tracking system - I have suggested this video to many that either doubt the Z9 or are just inquiring about its capabilities - well done!
Thanks for telling others. Yes the Z9 autofocus is second to none!
From one Baton Rouge shooter to another, much appreciated. I shoot marathons and weddings with similar results, even better now, with the v3.01 firmware update.
Baton Rouge in the house!! Maybe we'll bump into each other one day. Thanks for watching.
Great work and great post. We need more content of this kind for the Nikon community.
Yes we do mozman.
what is your shutter finger broken, go make some great content lol
@@longrider9551 I have a full time job, I'm not retired yet :P
Great Video >> most welcome here in South Africa
This is without a doubt the best tutorial on the Z9 I have seen, well done.
A great camera in the hands of a seasoned pro and this is what you get, perfection.
Getting low for the shot is part of what makes this sooooo good.
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching.
Outstanding craftsmanship sir!! Super Well Executed as Well!!! You truly Demonstrate the power of a super machine in the hands of a true professional!! Yes It’s The Best Machine Out there right now!!
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching.
This was so helpful. We just started using the Nikon Z9. Figuring out the auto focus has been a challenge. This video really helps show how it works. Thanks!
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching
Awesome work…love my Z9. It has done all that I have asked of it and more…subscribed
I have had a different journey to the same point - had an AE-1 for film, then went to a point and shoot Sony before moving to Nikon with the D7100. Latest was the D850, which is an amazing camera (I did keep it...), but decided the Z9 was the mirrorless that could finally give me what I had in the DSLR. And, like you, I've found that it does everything I need it to (I'm a wildlife/bird photographer). Amazing all-around camera. Thank you for the football demonstration - great shots! I haven't worked with people, other than family, so it's nice to see it on your Atomos shooting sports! Nice video!
Thanks for watching. Glad you liked the video. You still have your Canon Ae1?
@@prophotosla7784 I don't have the AE-1 anymore. I succeeded it with an A-1 (wanted that shutter priority, too), and do still have it! Haven't shot it in over 20 years, though!
Diggin those high burst reviews.. Thanks that was a big help!
Great video. Definitely want to see more of this from you.
Excellent video and informative as I also have a Nikon Z9
Glad it was helpful!
This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Great video which proves that the person behind the camera is more important than the camera itself. Does seem like an awesome camera. The focus switching speed between subjects is sick. 😮
Great shots and nice review. Really curious to try it now. I'ts been a while since I have had a Nikon!
Simply thank you!!!
Wow!!! Crazy good.
Sir, you are a Master. Camera is great too - Love mine - But YOU are a Master!
Got my Z9 2 weeks ago. So much better than my D4S. I honestly didn’t think it could get much better than the D4S. I am amazed at how good the auto focus is on this thing.
Yes the D4s is great! I forgot to mention how great it is in my video but you are so right, the Z9 is much better.
Wow what a great video about the Z9! Most comprehensive video from anyone IMHO within the sports side.
Was the transition from the D5 to the Z9 difficult?
Is the upgrade worth the expense?
Do you wish that Nikon would make a baby Z9 like Canon has with the R6, R5 from the R3?
Have you ever tried a Canon mirrorless for comparison?
Thank you in advance and I look forward to watching more of your videos!
Hey Okoye: Great idea attaching your Ninja to give us this fantastic view of how you shot the game. Thanks so much! Apologies if I missed it in your run-up to where the game starts on the video, but what lens were you using? Also, looks like I'm your 52nd subscriber. Keep this good stuff comin'.👍
Oops, got it part way through... a 400 2.8 So obviously with an FTZ then. Where were you on the field?
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching David. I used the 400 2.8 G and z 70-200 lens. I shot from the corner end zone on both ends of the field.
Great video and photography skillz! I want this camera!
Thank you for this. I have wonderful INITIAL experiences with my Z9 (weddings/Events) and Wildlife (Birds in flight for myself for fun), but seeing "down-n-dirty" real life, and not "curated" usage in a high-pressure environment like yours really puts it all together for me in terms of what the camera in my hands IS capable of. Truth be told, I've gotten GORGEOUS results going back to my old D90, and still do with my Z6 (OG), D800, D750, & D500. But none of them have gotten me the consistent in-focus shots of Kingfishers and hummingbirds at 20FPS for that "seminal moment" that makes it CLICK... All while I'm still learning the basics of getting around the body and its quirks! (EVERY camera EVER has quirks, you just learn to lean into them and squeeze the best performance out of it that you can.
Oh-
Slight rant: I felt like I heard you "defend" yourself about camera choices there a bit... I don't think you should have to! All these people complaining about what a particular body can't do that another can, should LEARN ONE and then HOW TO WORK AROUND IT to make it work for THEM. Actual complaint: The Z9 is "heavy". So what? I carry my OM-1 when hiking. Lightweight & 50FPS. Body & f/4 600mm(Yes, "effective" as it's a 300mm f/4 on M4/3) lens both weigh less than the lightest Nikon f/4 lens does by itself, BUT that Nikon lens is IDEAL for my other types of work. Nothing new under the sun. EVERY camera type/brand has "special needs". I don't think you should need to explain yourself for "how gear works". I respect your craft. The gear doesn't matter as much as you do. Don't let people make you defensive. :-) Rant over. And if I was mistaken, I apologize. I don't mean to speak for you. Just don't like to see people feel a need to apologize when they've done nothing wrong.
Oh, and "slow-moving humans" on a Z9? Brides, grooms, and event guests dancing or talking in low/mixed lighting don't come CLOSE to taxing this thing's capabilities! ;-)
Great to see the viewfinder view; thanks
Go Nikon!
Great video👍
👍 Best yet, Outstanding demonstration, excellent! ...Z9 Rocks
Thanks Bob. I appreciate you watching and your feedback!
Great video man.
Thanks for watching.
Just curious and maybe you said it and I missed it but was this with the latest 3.0 firmware ?
No its not 3.0. Haven't had time to update it yet.
Very nice review, yes Z9 is a great tool and with competitive price, compare with its abilities !
A great autofocus system.
That's ironic that you pulled out your AE1. I just happened to be thinking tonight how the AE1 was the camera I learned photography on. And I've been shooting on Nikon since, including the Z9.
I love the AE1. You still have yours? Thanks for watching.
@@prophotosla7784 I think my dad still has it. It was his and he bought me a Nikon N70 my last year of college in 1998. Nikon guy since then...until I tried the Canon R3 two weeks ago.
Okoye,
Wonderful video. I was at that Mississippi Game and got some good shots with my D5. I just went to the Alabama game with my new Z9 after watching quite a few videos and got some great shots, but I was a little frustrated with the selections I had made on the focus side of things. Your video helped immensely. My only question is, which setting do you prefer for the actual game shots. Thanks again for doing this. I hope to meet you on the sidelines at the UAB game.
Hi Camm and thanks for the compliment. Pregame I shoot 3d with people icon. I shoot dynamic area small for all game action. That way I don't miss any fast action or transitions. For example, when shooting football game action, using any other focus such as 3d or auto area is leaving too much room for error because the camera won't be able to differentiate between a complete pass or a interception. I shot a tennis match using 3d with people icon and it locked on the players eye the entire time! I shot with the d5 and it is a great camera. You keeper rate should increase with z9 shooting dynamic area because the auto focus is faster on z9.
I would like to do a comprehensive comparison and review between Nikon Z9 👈 Nikon D6
And the full, deep and comprehensive difference between DSLR 👈 Mirrorless

Great idea!
Good job and yes the Z9 is better than the D6 in good light. 2x Mp 2- fps vs 14, and eye tracking. But in ultra low light the D6 AF wins - dslr does not need as bright a scene as mirrorless do for their af to work optimally. All other things equal I could shoot my D6 With 1-stop lower ISO than shooting with either of my Z9. BUT the far higher resolution of the Z9 and tracking are clear winners. I shoot big cats not sports.
Thanks for watching. I never shot with D6 so thanks for clearing that up.
yess yes
awesome video THANKS ❤🙌
Okoye, I absolutely love this video and you should have a million subscribers based on the production value of this video. Very well done indeed.
I was quite surprised at how well the 3D People detection was doing during the warmups with the State players. I never really thought it would work well with helmets.
So this is my biggest question. I noticed you were shooting with the Z 70-200 2.8 and it looked like maybe you were using an F mount 400 2.8? Knowing how well the Z 70-200 2.8 performs, do you you think the F mount 400 2.8 focus is as fast as the Z lenses for focusing?
Hi Mike and thanks for the compliment. Yes I use the 400 2.8G with adapter and it focuses just as fast as my z70-200 and z24-70. You won't notice a difference. In fact my 400G focuses faster on my z9 than it did on my D5.
Thanks for the demo. You need to join our community on CZcams.
Thanks for watching. I'll join the community.
@@prophotosla7784 we love Nikon content creators. Welcome to the community.
This is great, thank you. Are you using back button focus also?
Yes I use back button focus. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your review. I own the Nikon Z9 for 9 months now, but I'm a bit confused by your photo replays. You say you were in AF-C, Dynamic small (a pretty good selection) but the video on screen seems to suggest you were in Wide Area Small with people face/eye detection - a feature that is not available in Dynamic small. The details around the screen also suggest it was really Wide Area Small, not dynamic. I realize that you have been shooting Nikon DSLRs for some time, and dynamic is and was frequently used. I only bring this up because many reviewers and pros confuse the terms dynamic AF with wide area and combine the terms. They are two separate modes on the Z9 with only Wide Areas and 3D having AI/Eye detection. Dynamic AF works just like it did on the DSLR without face/eye detection. Did you shoot with just Lossless compressed RAW or with JPG backup for quick processing? Have you tried the HE* compression and what software are you using to edit your files (Since C1 at current posting can not handle HE*, but does a better job at noise reduction with high ISO files than Adobe). Thanks for your review.
You're correct I made a mistake labeling my settings on the WR photos. Sorry about that.
@@prophotosla7784 No worries. It's a common issue. Thanks again for your post.
What lens do you use with this homie
400mm 2.8G and z70-200 2.8
