The amount of sugar in a bread affects how quickly it will brown in a toaster. I make a zero sugar bread that could probably go 3-4 minutes without looking toasted (but would be crisp), whereas that bagel was obviously a sweet, high sugar version, so it is no surprise it toasted quickly.
I never even thought of this, good info!
That was my thought as well
Makes sense
You learn something new every day.....
No, it toasted quickly because the temperature is high
I LOVE my Dash oven! Had mine for a little over a year. Actually got two so I could have one in my classroom office for lunch time. You can absolutely cook meats in it. I've done salmon, chicken thighs, hot dogs . . . I even prefer to reheat food it in rather than the microwave. Just get some parchment paper for the little tray, or better yet, go to Daiso and get a silicone baking dish for a couple of bucks. I use mine everyday in conjunction with my Dash Egg Steamer. (I love making eggs, rice, and cake with the egg steamer!) After you use it a few times, you get used to how much time you need to set it at for each particular dish. Foods cook QUICK since it's a very concentrated 400°F. So glad to see my favorite reviewer doing a video for this oven!
I have a couple of silicone ice cube trays, but I didn't know about the silicone baking dishes. Thank you.
Can you do biscuits?
@@cindybell3694 I haven't tried making biscuits in the mini oven, but again, it reaches a temp of 400° so I'd guess they'd be fine in there
I’m a truck driver and I had one of those on my truck for years and used it almost every day. I loved it!
I knew I'd see it being used in trucking in the comments. Do you think this was marketed towards truck drivers?
@@johnfury8834 I don’t know if it was or not but I got three years out of it and it still works. I keep it at home now because my son bought a small toaster oven for me that I can also bake in.
stuff like this is why I watch this channel. I'll never buy this, but its so cool that it exists for the small number of people who would like it
Regarding the personal pan pizza you cooked in this oven. Please note that you smooshed the pizza up against the side of the oven on one and and left air flow on the other side. This would make a difference in the browning with no side airflow on the smooshed up side. Just a thought. Make sure to center all items to be cooked whether on the rack or the baking sheet. This goes for a regular oven, as well.
Thanks dude. You actually have explained to me why so many times now my fat ass has tried a pizza too small for my oven so it doesn't get to heat up the middle. I have a peasant oven. It's gas and in a tiny apartment. About twice the size of an ezbake oven extreme 2003 edition
I can't even do the totinos ones. They fit, but they don't cook right. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG WITH PIZZA?
@@Pr0toPoTaT0 let the oven heat up for another 20 minutes or so after it's done pre heating, cook with the rack in the middle
Better yet cook the pizza without the tray because you can't flip the pizza over as you could with bread, bagels or English muffins.
Yeah, I noticed that as well. I also rotate my pizza in the oven when cooking them as well just in case as I've had similar issues to this.
One issue with your bagel test is it is a fruit bagel, therefore has more sugar content, which will brown/burn more quickly than a plain one
I've had my Dash Mini Toaster Oven for more than three years, and I use it almost daily. It's the best toaster I've ever had--cooks the moisture out of the bread so it's nicely crispy. I also use it to make small casseroles (yes, it is possible!), baked potatoes, and more. This morning, I baked a tiny batch of four homemade buttermilk biscuits. When it comes to pizza, I've tried the singles as you show but I honestly prefer to buy a square party pizza (you know, the cheap ones) and slice it into four parts (put three back into the freezer for later)--one is enough for me for a meal, so I just put some extra cheese on top and it cooks great. I honestly can't say how much I love this little appliance.
i have a tiny casserole dish and i was thinking it would fit nicely in that, as i type this i am making my dinner in it right now in my regular size toaster oven
Hol up... you're saying one fourth of a party pizza is a meal for you? The $1.50 Totino's pizzas?
Each of the party pizzas is like 600 calories. You're eating 150 calorie meals? Are you still alive?
Lol that was the main thing I noticed. How on earth could a fourth of those pizzas fill you up? That's like 3 bites
@@GordonGEICO Actually, yes, it can be because I add other toppings to it. And I have a salad or soup with it.
You might want to use the tray for bagels. That way the bottom won't get burned and the top can get toasty.
That's what I was going to say! In mine,I like to use the tray and time it for 2 minutes for bagels. Bread is great on the rack though, as are mini pizzas (but not deep dish like his. Think Totino's that are around $1 from Walmart.)
Also, preheating helps a lot.
My thought as well.. You don't need to cook the bottom of the bagel!
I thought the oven would have been still hot from previous test and that's why beagle burnt. Or it had higher sugar content than the white bread
Or just use a toaster instead of this mini broiler.
Easy bake oven for adults.. I enjoy your reviews, you do a great job. 😊😊😊❤❤
LMAO. That's so true!!
I hunted for this remark, lol. I knew it was coming...
The classic easy bake oven I used as a kid literally used a single light bulb to heat things, at least this toaster has actual heating elements
I have to admit that this looks pretty handy and affordable if it is used in its proper capacity. It could be a 'toasted' cheese sandwich monster (not going to say grilled and get into that).
Although I can't really think of any situations off hand where I only need ONE slice of toasted bread.
Maybe it’s just an old school thing, but I LOVE the ticking sound.
I think having so many things heated at once would probably skew the time needed for later things quite a bit because it is still pretty hot after the first few items
James help....I smell toast.
😂
😂 my husband and I quote this every time we get tongue tied
I think that’s a symptom of a stroke…..or possession by a demon.
Do not buy or try to eat red Baron pizza
Weird I Smell coffee
I had one and loved it. I was great for melting cheese on top of tomatoes on toast. I also would cook an egg in a small fluted silicone tart dish. I gave it to a student in the end who loves it. Enjoyed your review. Thank you
I feel like in the search of new and different people forget the beauty of the regular popup toaster. One that size fits 4 slices, cooks both sides, and costs about $20.
You're completely right lol the one and only thing this mini toaster oven can do that a toaster cant is a personal pizza or something. Even then a personal pizza is usually a bit bigger than a slice of bread
Honestly, for $15-$20 it might not be too bad for the occasional small electronics projects to solder surface mount components on a PCB. The lack of temp control might be a problem, but I suppose you could just keep an eye on it…
Hey James thanks for posting so many quality videos! Every time one of your vids appears in my feed I know I have something to look foreword to.
I’m wondering if the unit had enough time to cool off in between different takes of each bread. The super burned bagel seems like an issue of the unit already being pre-heated from the toast 🤔🥯
But there again some people are suggesting preheating before toasting so which is it?
I've noticed on my toaster oven it will reduce the heating time if it's already hot.
Looks like an Easy Bake Oven for adults who are kids at heart!
Me
@@WildlifeWarrior-cr1kk
Going on 48 kid & teen at heart!
Dont open it but flip it half way thru? You know somewhere, someone is going to flip over the whole machine lol. Look for future warnings in the manual lol
Or you can do what ive been doing and toasting it in a pan after I cooked some SPAM type meat. Literally takes like 20 seconds at most in a pan, honestly been my favorite way to toast bread lately.
I have this toaster oven and I like it. It isn't perfect but for the size and cost it was worth it for me. I live in a small apartment with very little counter top space. So, this little guy is perfect. It cooks two single slices of a bagel faster then my old toaster over did. I've cooked all sorts of things in it. Frozen foods, chicken nuggets, reheated left overs. Also, the design is way cuter than pretty much all other toaster ovens.
How do you actually fit two slices in there? It only seems like there is room for only one.
@@__1201 It can only fit one at a time but even then it can cook both slices faster than my old toaster oven with both slices at the same time could.
@@bunnybubs757 The timer is 15 minutes. I might go for the whole 15 just checking in on them making sure they don't get burnt and a flipping sides around the halfway point.
@@brandchan thank you
I've been curious about this toaster for a while. Thanks for reviewing it!
I've seen this toaster oven before and did wonder about it. It looked like something that would be great to have in a dorm room to make breakfasts or late night snacks. Thanks for reviewing it. I really enjoy how thorough you are when you review anything.
Looks nice, but who toasts a single slice at a time? I feel like it would be a lot more practical if it was a bit taller to fit a second rack. A version with a digital dial would also improve the experience.
The 2 and a half minute bagel is a Bailey Bagel now. I wonder if you could make a grilled cheese in it.
Yes, I make grilled cheese in my Dash toaster.
I love your reviews they are so chill
I thought it was much too small for my needs, but you demonstrated how useful this would be for a college dorm.
Thanks for doing these reviews of undervalued products. I might pick one up for my son.
.. A little oven for one person .. I agree ..
Would it though? It's just so small, I feel like a regular sized toaster oven would be better
A small airfryer would be better
Also, a fish fillet, a chicken breast, some nuggets, a cupcake...
@@NyanyiC I have a small air fryer. They serve different purposes. I can see a lot of reasons why I might need this tiny oven, and a lot of reasons why I need my air fryer
Always love your videos keep up the good work
I’ve had this for a year or two. I use a lot of foil to cover the top when I cook stuff. Counter cooking channel did a few personal meals from raw.
I like my single slice toaster. This oven would need a temp control for me to consider.
As someone who still hates big kitchens, & ovens, this looks perfect! I've used an old mini grill for about 25yrs, instead of full-size thing, but it's all rusted now & apparently the kids find it embarrassing, plus I'm worried its now giving off fumes, so maybe time I (reluctantly) replaced it..
It’s extremely cute but my fear would be that you forget you put something in and suddenly everything goes up in flames, including your kitchen. BTW, that wasn’t a bagel you put in there. It was a bagel-shaped roll. Next time you come to the east coast, get a real bagel!
And thanks for your reviews- you do a great job and are fun to watch.
I love the musician in you that can't resist a good beat in the making 😂
I've used a mini toaster oven like this for years, I mostly baked the frozen Sabatasso pizzas from Costco. I've learned to rotate my pizza around about halfway through because it heats uneavenly. I turn rotating 180° halfway through for anything I put in there.
The numbers on the side of toasters don't refer to time. eg 1) Capacitor toasters-the kind of toasters most of us own-run on a circuit that cuts off once the capacitor (a device inside your toaster that stores energy) is charged to a specific voltage. So, the numbers on these toasters refer to a resistance rate, or the time it takes for the capacitor to charge, in turn changing how long the toast actually stays in your toaster. 2) Bimetallic strip toasters are usually older models, and run on a circuit system connected by a bent strip. When the heat gets too high, the bimetallic strip will bend to a point where it no longer connects to the circuit, and out pops your toast. The numbers on these models control the level of electricity you’re using; a lower number means a higher electric current, which will heat up and cut off the circuit quicker and toast your bread only briefly.
I really love your reviews
The drum beats in sync with the timer ticks was relaxing 😌
I've found with timers like this that you should go slightly past the desired time then back to the time you want. It's like it's a a spring that has to be wound first (past your time) then set to the proper time.
I have that same exact oven in that same color. It's really great for toasted sandwiches.
I love this thing, I have one at work in my office. I have celiac disease, gluten free bread is really not good unless toasted, and it’s safe for me. You have to be careful it really toasts.
I just got one of these and it’s great. I learned to cover food with tin to get things to cook properly without burning. It fits 2 pizza pockets perfectly, that’s all I really need it for lol😊
This tiny toaster would perfect for making smores.....and that's all I would probably use it for XD. Great review my dood.
This would be good for a dorm or at a FLETC facility. Police officers at FLETC stay months in a cramped dorm-like room during training. This would definitely come in handy
It looks like a good idea so long as you only need to feed one or two people in the household. The smaller size is going to concentrate the heat in the chamber and preheat more quickly (which is something you have to consider on larger ovens, but can basically ignore here).
I've experienced that same difference in doneness using other methods, so it's not the toaster's fault. For the pizza, you could honestly flip it over once the cheese starts to brown. Some minor cleanup on the tray is gonna be worth getting the underside cooked nicely.
Flip a pizza? What are you some kind of sadist?
But in all seriousness, yea that would probably work if you dont mind losing a bit of toppings. With this hilariously tiny thing tho I'd just putting it directly on the rack and clean any drippings off the bottom once it cools. If you want to be real lazy you could stick a piece of foil over the heating element and just toss it when done with little to no cleanup required.
@@adamgenard3188 lol yeah I like the crispy cheese bits that touched the pan
when you were comparing the muffin to the bagel, i'm guessing the thinner muffin didn't cook as fast because the bagel is thicker and closer to the heating element
Oh this looks like it would be nice for polymer clay or shrink plastic.
'Small issue...' "it's cramped in there". LMAO
I'd prefer a small air fryer over this as it seems pretty limited.
I agree, we bought a 25 litre air fryer on clearance, we were able to roast meat, rotisserie chicken, toast enough toast for the whole family in one go and it's got a pizza function that has produced many crispy Pizzas.
@@inkavanderbijl7504 25 litres isn't a small air fryer, by any means. Especially if it can fit a whole pizza, that's an oven brobro.
@@UserName92149 Haha good one!
@@DylonsBBGorl I bought it for about 150, so the same cost as this "toaster".
I've used mine to make cupcakes before. Has to be shallow to avoid burning as it rises, but they can be wider than a normal cupcake, so about same size. Definitely fun, but the high heat makes it an adjustment, since things tend to burn.
I’m impressed. That’s a pretty perfect toasted piece of bread for the first trial.
Thanks for helping me decide not to get it after all. I've been thicnking about it for awhile now, but your assessment about how hot gets was the deciding factor for me. I'm a massive stroke survivor w/ right side weakness. Also I'm in wheelchair. So I have 1 strong hand & the countertop is higher for me then most; both of those things could pose a safety risk for me. I'll just keep using my regular toaster. Thanks for helping me come to my final decision. Much appreciated.
Air fryers don’t really
get hot on the outside and really only need the use of one hand. You can adjust time and temp. Mine is Cosori. I love it but costs more than this
@@GatorGirl123 - Thanks! I've been considering getting an air fryer too. I think that would be a better option for me then this product.
I agree with @maryhand4088 - from a safety standpoint I think an air fryer would be better suited for your needs. Plus even an inexpensive air fryer can do so much more than this thing. The size and lack of temp control makes it way too limiting.
Lol. When you came in with the Tongs it was a shock 🤣😂🤣 They looked monsterous 😂
Great little toaster for a camp trailer with limited space. Thanks for the honest review ❤
Thanks for the demonstration. Seems like a pretty cool item. I would use that if I needed it.
(the voice of Genie in Disney's Aladdin)
PHENOMINAL HEAT OUTPUT...
Itty little tiny space.
I’ve had a couple of Dash products and really love them. The Air Fryer is my fave. This would come in handy if I were a college student or single. I’m in my 60’s, so I don’t eat large portions. My hubby does though.
Thanks for another great review!!!
I use mine for those eggrolls you buy at the store that get all cold. It's perfect for getting the crunchy back and heating the insides back up. In fact, I'd say it's perfect for keeping a crisp texture crispy on reheat. I also used mine for a sliced in half baked potato.
3:33 - The 2 dimples in the back coupled with the slice of bread makes it look like a 😀
Nice Soupy Sales hand gestures. I like the 2 1/2 minute bagel. Great review!
I'm not a scientist, opted for physics instead of chemistry but I imagine the bagel has more sugar in it so I'm sure that aids the toasting.
I personally use a larger toaster oven that has replaced my regular oven. It can do everything I need from an oven without using as much power/time to do so.
I can throw a piece of bread in there at 450 for 5 minutes and it'll be perfectly toasted every time. In that time I can also have my eggs cooked and plated up for breakfast, so it works out great.
That thing is so laughably small, once I saw a slice of bread in there, it gave me a good chuckle.
I have this toaster oven at my office. My favorite thing to cook in it are breaded chicken tenders. The Perdue ones in the refrigerator are the perfect size to fit three on a tray. They do get sticky, so I cover the tray with non-stick foil. I also have had success making a grilled ham and cheese and breakfast sandwiches using ham or canadian bacon.
my favorite person to watch for reviews!
Toast time really varies a lot on bread because a lot of it has to do with how much moisture there is in the bread. Comparing, for example, bagels are a dryer bread than most English Muffins.
Yeah Wonder Bread!! My grandmother and grandfather worked in a Wonder Bread store.
You could probably roast a medium sized rat in one of these. Of course, you'd need to set the 4 minute timer several times to get that crispy skin we all like.
This would make a great mini reflow oven !!!!
I got this as a gag gift and love it. It makes the best toast and is adorable!!!!
I love the concept and how quickly it toasts, but not being able to toast two slices at once is a deal breaker for me. In theory, it seems like there is enough room to add another level and rack though. I'd rather have two wire racks than the tray.
Would you do review for the Bulls Eye Pro. It's a small thing that's supposed to inflate car tires and other things. Kind of expensive so we just wanted to see if it actually works. Thank you for all you do. It helps so much to see if things work before we buy!
I have 2 of these and have used a company called Rocket Scream to convert them to small PCB solder reflow ovens..
It does have quartz rods, which is nice.
i think its really cool the sell for me is the heating element, if it had an upper and lower iron rod in it it might not be as hot and it would take longer and use more power.
It does have both upper and lower rods. I've had my Dash for years, and it's great.
Your videos are always so much fun! I think the bagal and the English would have been better on the pan over the rack.
now I wanna see Shaq next to the mini toaster oven
I could see someone living full time in a converted van liking this, due to the small size...I wonder how much power it draws compared to a full size one.
It is about 500 watts
I just bought one today 😂 Good timing
lol you shoulda kept goin with the beat with the toaster!
Great so it takes up more room than a 2 slice pop up toaster but can only do 1 slice at a time and it has the added inconvenience of no temperature control or keep warm setting that you would get on a basic pop up toaster.
that's too small. My toaster oven is more than twice that size, and I love it for pizza and toasting sandwiches and burritos and stuff.
Dorm toaster. Dude I WANT that pizza cutter🤣
I love my Dash single, small waffle maker but I think I'll skip this & just keep using my full sized toaster. Good to know that the whole thing gets super hot too, that alone is a reason to skip it for a regular toaster or toaster oven.
Use a spatula rather than the tongs and it will work better.
Thanks, James. Have a great weekend!
Toast the bagel on the tray, hippie 😆
The issue I have is taking a bagel out of the oven without burning the top of my fingers. The wire rack does not easily slide out, and yes, I have used a potholder. Any suggestions.
FWIW, my newest favorite cooking gadget is the DREO Chefmaker Air Fryer Combi oven. I like it quite a bit and I think a review since it's been released would be perfect for your channel. I was lucky to get it for the $199 early bird price for the Kickstarter, but I'd be curious on your thoughts since you've tried so many other items.
Wow, I just looked, it’s $359 on Amazon
@@valerief1231 Yeah, it's not exactly inexpensive, but speaking from my personal use over the last month, it was well worth the purchase price.
Maybe the bagel burned because it had a higher sugar content?
Toasted cheese sammies! That's where this oven is a rock star!
I had this in the color pink a couple years ago. Used at work, only used it for poptarts. Didn't like it. Too small. Ended up giving it to a coworker for her granddaughter to play with. Hope she doesnt burn down the house.
I'm looking at the thumbnail and just thinking "Why, what's the point?!"
Can't say I would have a use for it, but given how small, cheap and effective it is, it's really not that bad of a buy. I'd be curious to see if you could make a 'grilled' cheese in it.
The problem with this is that it's mostly for toasting bread, but a toaster has an even smaller footprint than it and can toast two slices! If you do cook other things with it, then I guess it could be useful. Otherwise, maybe it could help you cut down on carbs by disincentivizing toasting more than one slice of bread?
I quite like this… I heat up pizza sometimes in the regular oven and seems using a lot of energy to do that task 👍
I'm tempted to get one of these for drying out chemicals when I do my chemistry videos 😂😂😂😂
We have this in our camper, perfect for a small space
No more in-app ads on the timer on James phone is very satisfying.
It had always very mildly bugged me.
edit... never mind it came back later in the video :(
You the man keep up the good work
