    An officer at our area was recently on the news for trying to do something like this, but it wasn’t for an emergency though. It was for his own selfish reasons. It was reported allegedly that he threw a temper tantrum and threatened to arrest the receptionist. He allegedly caused such a scene that they called the police on him. This happened about a month ago. He still works for the police department, but he is on desk duty. He won’t be out in the field for a very long time according to a few fellow officers. The only reason he wasn’t fired is because of the police union.

    Don't you have to wait 48 to 72 hours to get tested? I was told it takes that long for it to move through the bloodstream and multiply, and if you do it right after, you could test negative only to test positive later.

    • @lindseymcdougall9774
      @lindseymcdougall9774 Před měsícem +18

      Actually it takes a lot longer for you to become positive.
      If you get a needle-stick injury, go get checked. They will do your bloods then and there (main part is to check you aren’t already infected and didn’t know). You then get post-exposure prophylaxis meds. It reduces the chance of developing an infection if the blood did have infection in it.
      If you know who used the needle and they are willing to get tested, then you take the meds while waiting for their results (potentially get them the same day but can take a few days). Stop meds if their bloods are negative. Continue meds if they are positive, and keep your fingers crossed. Get rechecked about 3 months later to see if you have become positive or not.
      If you don’t know who’s needle it is (which would be the case if it’s out on the street), or the person refused to get tested) you continue the meds and get tested again in 3 months.
      Post-exposure prophylaxis reduces the chance of HIV infection and is worth using. Knowing you are already HIV/hepatitis b/hepatitis c positive is worth knowing as you can get treatment fast and protect your loved ones. Getting your second tests three months later is worth it to know you are negative or know if you are positive and get early treatment and protect your loved ones.
      The 3 month timing is from what was done about 3 years ago, It might have changed now.

      Also, there are a lot of other diseases you could get from a needlestick injury. HIV is actually the least of your concerns theses days. It doesn't survive long outside the human body so a discarded needle is very unlikely to give you HIV and even if you do get infected, it may be years or decades before it starts affecting you. In that time, you can take medication that can reduce your viral load so low, you're not only asymptomatic but also uninfective. Hep B and Hep C are much bigger concerns.

      I understand it more as in, he said 'armed police'. They are armed and are a potential danger by staying long so it's protocol to prioritize them (to send them off early) and I kind of accept that. I mean, who wants to be in a place with someone with a gun for hours? Yeah, they can be separated but a hospital also has plenty of hazards that I don't want people getting ideas to mix with guns. Though I know the guy was using it as a prevailege, I can see the logic of the protocol.
