I'm with you. RE2 was the game that turned me into a wuss about horror (I watched my cousins play it when I was 7 and had nightmares). 20 years later and I'm watching Johnny's review of it at night and feel good watching it.

In said file (which we get), it's written that he had sexual assault charges dropped because of being "academically excellent".

Meanwhile, I first played the original Resident Evil 2, on the n64, when I was a kid, with my Dad, who loved the game, and RE2(1998), is the reason why Leon is my favorite RE protagonist, even though RE2 was the first RE game I ever played. Because while I wanted to play original RE, I didn't have a PS1, because we couldn't afford it. So while I didn't like the idea of starting off a series at it's sequel, RE2 is a good starting point, because I didn't even know what happened in the first game, but this game made me feel like I knew what happened. Mainly when you play Claire's Scenario, because she's looking for her brother, Chris Redfield, a member of S.T.A.R.S.(which stands for Special Tactics And Rescue Squad),
Alpha Team, Position: Point Man, one of the protagonists of RE1, along with Jill Valentine, (another Alpha Team S.T.A.R.S. member), Position: Rear Security. And while Claire doesn't find Chris she does find a letter in the S.T.A.R.S. Office that mentions that Chris had already left Raccoon City, to go to Europe, to try to take down Umbrella, so while Claire's relieved that he's safe, she's also worried about him. Also, Marvin Branagh, the injured cop, that meets either Leon or Claire, cab also tell Claire about her missing brother, depending on which scenario you played first. Sorry for the overly long comment, but I really love this game, and Leon's my favorite RE protagonist, so I can't help but go into crazy details about my favorite RE games, 2 and 4. Again, sorry!

I can’t play the classic REs for shit I’ve only beaten 4, 5 and Remake 2 but 2 was always my favorite of the classic titles it’s the most balanced of action and puzzles with the best story
Even if I have no confidence to play Classic 2 I still prefer it over Remake 2 which is still super good
The classics are not too bad to get around. The thing is, the game equates moving forward as relative to the direction a character is facing and not the direction of the camera, which is why the remaster of the REmake's redone controls aren't as good. They make it relative to the camera.

"The Second Malformation of G." Perfect song of OG RE2. And THE reason to have the Classic Soundtrack for REmake 2. Seriously, that song just makes G 3 in the lab a MUCH better fight, as the SECOND it pops on for Leon or Claire, you know, that IT. IS. ON!!
The N64 port of RE2 isn't talked about enough. It is legitimately a technical marvel, something that should go down in video game history. People simply do not appreciate how incredible it is that that port even exists.
Honestly I thought the game a and b option was downgraded in the remake. Doesn’t hurt it of course but it’s for that reason that I see the remake and original as being on par.
Check out Ruby of Blue's comparison. He dives deep into the differences and points out a lot of things about the remake that many big youtubers didn't.
I Like a few of the changes in the remake, but I think the original is way better overall.

@@EviltheNub I see RE2R as a design improvement in most cases. I felt the RPD was less linear, the sewers were WAY more open and explorative, the boss fights were better, the story is better paced in ONE individual scenario, and RE2's inherently more actiony design compared to RE1 just flows in OTS.
However, RE2R fumbles the scenario system. RE2OG still has that one aspect where story is much better executed as a cohesive whole across two scenarios and there's some choice and decision-making that RE2R lost. It's not enough for me to not say I find RE2R better, because of the huge improvements made to the Post-RPD portions of the game, but it's enough for me to say RE2R is not a total and complete replacement the way REmake 1 is.

Claire Redfield's jacket has the words 'Made in Heaven' written on the back. This text is a direct reference to the Band Queen and its album 'Made in Heaven'.
During the end boss battle, Ada Wong suddenly appears and throws a rocket launcher weapon that can be used to kill the boss. The same thing happens at the end of Resident Evil 4.
According to the official Capcom page, Wesker was there when Ada fell and saved her. This would make sense as Ada joins forces with Wesker later on in the series.

What I found neat about the game’s writer, Noboru Sugimura is that he also worked on the 1993 film, Kamen Rider ZO. I think it becomes a horror film in later parts of the film

21:48 The reason Mr. X only chases the B scenario is that he’s after the G-virus sample in Sherry’s locket. In Claire B, Sherry has it. In Leon B, Sherry drops it and Ada carries it.
Edit: This can be seen in Claire B where Claire gets rid of Mr. X and causes him to fall into the vat of molten iron by tossing said pendent over the railing in the power room.
For more story that was explained in later games, when USS Alpha Team (the team sent to retrieve the G-Virus that Birkin hunted down) didn't report back, Umbrella assumed their mission failed and would send Mr. X to retrieve the sample. Later turned moot as HUNK survived and managed to retrieve a sample anyway but Umbrella didn't know that until the day after RE2's events.
Another note: The cutscene where Mr. X is dropped into the station shows 5 more Tyrant pods on the helicopter. We would later learn that these remaining 5 Tyrants would be sent to stop a US Delta Force team from getting the G-Virus. Both squads killed each other and their bodies can be seen at the end of RE3 in the Dead Factory. Nemesis gets stronger by reading on one of the Tyrant's mutated bodies.
I love the interconnectivity.
2020 Is shaping up to be a fantastic year with a start like this.

I always thought it was strange that there have never been mutated rats as well. You’d think it is a no brainer especially in the sewer areas.
It’s crazy to think I discovered this channel in 2010. It was the first channel I got into that had anything smart and heartfelt to say about old games. The channel is still very CZcams 2.0 but I love coming back to it. Best of luck to you in the new decade Johnny!

The reason why the N64 is such a technical marvel is because Factor 5 helped with the compression technology. They're the people behind Star Wars Rogue Squadron, which are some of the best looking games on the N64/gamecube.
Sadly they went bankrupt, but it's impressive nonetheless. Anyway, great review Johnny! Keep em coming :)

Actually, the main reason there were 2 discs was because the planners overestimated the file size of the audio algorithm. In truth all 4 scenarios could’ve fit on one disc.

John no one is looking forward to dealing with Nemesis in the upcoming RE3 remake. You know what happened to Mr X, he's aggressive as hell, can chase you throughout the RPD, tank almost everything you throw at him, and can make the player waste resources. Nemesis is much more dangerous due to the fact that he has the ability to use heavy weapons like rocket launchers, have tentacle whips, and a bunch of other shit that will run circles around Mr X. Like I said, no one wants to deal with Nemesis.
PO801 _ but thats what made Nemesis so great! He stands as one of, if not my favorite enemies in all of Res Evil JUST for the things you pointed out. Its tension in a boss battle done right, and if you do actually manage to bring him down, the rewards are so beyond worthwhile. I hope they carry that over into the Remake, and i cant express how excited i am for this remake in particular.

Great review! I only played the first Resident Evil back in the day, but I do clearly remember the hype for Part 2. I may have to pick up a copy some time and try it. Looking forward to the review of Part 3!
The older RE games have aged exceptional well despite an outdated control scheme (Which I do like). I played RE3 Nemesis for the first time a few years ago and damn did I love it so much it came close to being my favorite. Really looking forward to the Remake of 3.
I think it's because of those antiquated controls that they've aged well. Because when you play an early RE game, you know that what you're getting isn't going to be modern. Kind of like an old independently made classic film like Evil Dead, you know it isn't going to always look the prettiest technically, but the clear love for the movie is felt in every frame
I will argue that "outdated/antiquated" is not the right word for the controls. Tank controls weren't a result of technological limitations or standards of the time, tank controls were never standard 3D controls. They were an intentional design decision against the grain of what were, at the time, modern 3D games like SM64 and whatnot controls because of the fixed camera angles. Tank controls simply are the most obvious solution to a problem offered by fixed camera angles: How do you make sure your character has consistent control across all changing angles? Easy, make the control centered on the character, rather than camera, and have left and right turn the character. Tank controls.
Even the fixed camera was not a technological limitation or design choice of the times. It was a result of RE being, blatantly, an attempt to mimic and improve on Alone in the Dark. Granted, AITD used fixed angles and pre-rendered backgrounds itself due to tech limitations, but RE saw them as an intentional design choice, a chance to create a different kind of horror. And in RE1, I'll argue that still holds true. With RE2 and 3 going more action-y, I will admit it becomes less essential. Still fine, but an OTS 2 and 3 makes sense in a way that an OTS RE1 never could IMO.

Fun Fact: Angel Studio, the guys who produced the N64 port of RE2, would go on to partner with Rockstar and develop games like Smugglers Run until eventually becoming Rockstar San Diego in late 2002.

20:30 it actually because Capcom realized that the voiced audio took up too much space to fit on one disk. Supposedly they could have found a way to fit in all on one, but they noticed this right at the end of development and had no time left.

This double marathon is both a blessing and a curse. I know we'll get a Kirby video next, but I also have to wait twice as long for the next Resident Evil review... At least Johnny probably isn't getting burned out on Kirby games though, so that's good.
This might be my favorite Johnny Vs. video. I dunno why, but more so than most others, i find myself revisiting this one in particular multiple times.
Despite me loving the remake much more, I still think the ps1 classic is still worth playing besides they are both so different that I cant hardly call them the same game

There's a possible reference to this in Super Gem Fighters aka Pocket Fighter in Japan. Akuma's ending has him being lead by Hi-senko to a graveyard to train. The final scene has him declare the graveyard as a perfect training ground.
The 1.5 Resi beta reminded me of when the Gold and Silver Spaceworld demo was found back in 2018. God, I love it when prototype stuff is brought back from under the dust and everyone can now experience it and see what could've been.

Yet another great review as always, i'll be honest you and your playthroughs are a big reason why i am trying to get into the franchise and so far i've gotten halfway through RE4 on my PS4, i'll look into that price drop you mentioned for RE2 remake if i ever build the courage to play it without having a heart attack.
