    Still the greatest movie I ever found, kid you not my group of friends found this VHS in the dumpster behind the library. They used to purge their renting selection of old stuff here and there, we'd score free movies once in a while. This movie was so prolific for us, we turned it into a ritual. It was a product of the times but we'd just have massive weed smoking sessions to this movie, reference it in public obnoxiously, named three weed pipes after the series, I could go on and on. My late brother (Friend) and I loved the hell out of this movie, I hope you're in Crom's halls my friend drinking and being merry.

The problem with most movies now its they care mostly for stunning visuals and much less for a meaningful story with a message. And if it does have a message they basically have to spell it oug for the audience. A lesson told to someone is far less meaningful than the lesson you pull from your own insights, and cheapons its value. Conan holds up in large part because it leaves you to discern its meaning. Yes! I loved that too. I'm all for powerful female characters, but getting bad writing crammed down our spinal columns is not the way to go. Sigourney led the 80s and 90s like a queen, then Geena Davis in "Long Kiss Goodnight" was a gem, but most if not all of the recent power girls in movies just suck. Noomi Rapace and Theron kick ass and will have long careers...I say pay them every dime for their talent.

      You know if this movie was released today Conan would be doubtful of Valeria's skills when they first meet, but then he would be proven wrong when she takes out 7 dudes on her own while Conan stands there dumbfounded.
      And she would be played by a brown actress.

    • @sunsetbilly
      @sunsetbilly Před 4 lety +2

      @Timothy Dexter True, true. (bit of a rant coming here - brace yerself)
      A key thing is that if you want to become a 'good' fighter as a man, you have to dedicate yourself to it. Valeria probably never fought a man who was not a 'good' fighter - she was just better. How was she better? By Sheer. Goddamn. Determination. For a woman to consistently outfight a man she needs to dedicate herself, 100%, to combat. Every breath of every day. Otherwise, she's counting on him pulling his punches, basically. I don't want to sound like a misogynist but .. this is physiology.
      Beyond that - I think this is a connection for Conan. Sure, he likes to soft & squishy girls; but Conan always is attracted, like a moth to flame, to strong women. The tougher, the better. I am always reminded of one of the Savage Sword of Conan comics which features none other than Conan's daughter.
      She'd grown up under the guidance of this temple, her mother some high ranking priestess. Said priestess had run off in her youth with Conan. The daughter is so wild and strong, unwilling to do her lessons like all the other girls - so mother tells her about her father. I'm always struck by one thing - the mother, as a young girl, says to Conan (I forget direct quotes) "say you'll always be with me. Say we'll be together forever."
      Conan refuses, and she gets stroppy.
      Conan cracks it, saying " I cannot see the future, and nor can you. I would rather be honest with you NOW. We share our time together, and then we move apart, or we do not. time moves on. Life moves on. In six months' time, will you feel the same? Will I? Any man who says he will be with you forever and will love you forever is a fool, or lying."
      And these characters could all accept this.
      Imagine Tony Stark telling whatsherface "yeah, totes loved you for a bit, babe, but, like, not anymore."

Not Conan. Conan *briefly* wishes he'd had a gentler life ... but he knows this is wishful thinking. Then he goes on to pray? He knows this is wishful thinking as well. Conan's focus is freedom. He knows, whether he lives or dies, it was by HIS decision. Whether it is a bad decision or not? Irrelevant. He made it. That is what pleases Crom! Not battle - but the freedom to meet your life head on.

But I think you and I have a completely different concept of what the word "great" means if you think it could be applied to this movie. I would reserve the word great for movies that reach a much higher standard like Casablanca, the Maltese Falcon, The Empire Strikes Back, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Those are great movies this barely qualifies as a good one, Arnie cannot act for one thing. His bad acting didn't stop something like Terminator 1 and 2 from being good movies, hell I might even give 2 the great moniker. But that's almost certainly because James Cameron made him say next to nothing and toned down the stupid shit.

    The first CD I ever bought was the soundtrack to Conan the Barbarian. Shit you not. I read all the Conan books when I was a kid so when this movie came out it really kicked ass!

    That first part was a cut that was not in the theatrical release. My version on dvd has it and I recently watched this movie and what a masterpiece! The music told allot of the story!
