Turnhout, Belgium | Jewels of Flanders

Turnhout is a city located in the Flemish province of Antwerp in Belgium. It developed as a result of the convergence of two important ancient trade routes and the need to protect the hunting castle of the Dukes of Brabant that lay in the area. In the 16th century Turnhout became a wealthy trading centre, but later suffered a series of ups and downs, mostly due to wars, fires and epidemics. In the late Middle Ages it was an important centre for weaving and the linen trade, and later, in the early 19th century, these trades were replaced by paper-based industries. Today the city retains much of this industry and is a world leader in the playing card industry.
We invite you to explore with us not only the city but also its surroundings, on foot and by bicycle. We will visit the Beguinage of Turnhout, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the castle of the Dukes of Brabant, the mill "Grote Bentelmolen" and then we will take a stroll through the nature reserve "Turnhouts Vennengebied" to finally end our journey in the village of Weelde with a beautiful view of the mills "Rosmolen" and "Arbeid Adelt".
