    Great video about #KarlovyVary :)! Well the main reason, why they sell these special thermal sipping mugs is, that the thermal spring water should be sipped with the handle (which includes a hole - similar to a drinking straw) while walking around the town and it shouldn't be consumed in a regular mug/thermos bottle and drunk as a hot water drink. Each thermal mineral spring around town also tastes differently as it contains different minerals and cures different diseases.
    Also fyi :)) the "yellow" dumplings are made of wheat & potatoe base while the "regular" dumplings are made of stale bread or rolls :)!
    The sweet dumplings filled with different fruits are very similar to Germknödel in Germany, there are also quark style dumplings but they aren't rolled in bread crumbs like they are made in Germany or Austria (Topfen-/Quarkknödel) but instead also sprinkled with a more solid type of quark on top :)!

    Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad in German) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is on the list of "Great Spas of Europe" with one of its long history, other places from the list that you might want to visit or already have are for example Baden-Baden in Germany, Spa in Belgium, Bath in England or Baden near Vienna in Austria. Karlovy Vary is a good example of the long, complex history of Europe, of the various emperors, tsars and royal families, as well as regions that have developed under different influences. Therefore, for me personally, it is always necessary to say that it is now typical for this or that country, borders have shifted so often, through wars, marriages or alliances. The architecture is really great and shows a bit of that Central European style that we can also find in Prague, Vienna, Wroclaw, Görlitz, Potsdam and Berlin.
    The laugh of Willa is always heartwarming. Thank you

    I loved the video.. again. ;-) Greetings from Amsterdam. We visited Karlovy Vary a couple of times. In the period 1998-2007, while camping on Camping Ontario (next to Mattoni mineral water plant) and camping Na Spici in Kyselka near Karlovy Vary. 2007 was the last time. We saw the city getting restored and painted looking nicer every time. I looked at the map and saw there was noting east of Kyselka. Yes a militairy training ground. Later I discovered a whole city, one of the oldest universities of Czechia included, was destroyed by the Russians to use it as the militairy training ground it is still today. The video makes me want to visit it again thanks!

My grandparents used to live right across the czech boarder in saxony and we had a little garden there with a really small house and we used to be there almost every weekend and went on a tour on or bikes and we would stop at these restaurants and that was exactly how I remember it. those Böhmische Knödel (bohemian dumplings) with some kind of pot roast and kraut.

    FunFact about Jáchymov
    From 1520 onwards, the Counts Schlick had silver coins minted which were called Joachimsthalers. They became known as thalers in German and tolars in Czech, which is the etymological origin of the currency name "dollar" via the Dutch daalder or daler.

    Karlsbad/Karlovy Vary is a representation of better times in the past. When it belonged to the kuk (kaiserliche und königliche) monarchy ruled by Austria with the capital Vienna/Wien. It was little like the European Union of today: different kingdoms under a leading power. But everyone kept its identity and language. It was one region in the succession of many which consisted of different nations on the European continent. Starting with the Romans, then Franks, Germans, Austrians. I may have left out some. But what we love about Europe was already there. Development of sophisticated culture and free travel in those countries.

  • @drau331
    @drau331 Před rokem +3

    Karlsbad was a part of Germany, felt 1945 to the Russians and after to Czechoslovakia. By the Benes-Declares, the German habitants had to leave without their property and lot of crimes against them took place, incl. murder and rape, where never prosecuted- and the modern governments refuse to do this till today.
    Sorry, but to see a town where just a few thiefs are placed - this has nothing beautiful. Thats the continuation of a crime. Yes, Germans did war crimes as well, but to treat one case in memory of an other AND not to handle that 80 years later not doesn't make it more moral. And the Benes-declares are still law in the Tchech Republic. That's the real scandal behind the scene.

    • @josefvavra6854
      @josefvavra6854 Před rokem +7

      It´s kinda more complicated, you know. Karlsbas historically was not part of Germany, but a part of Kingdom of Bohemia (or so called czech lands). BUT it was inhabitated mostly by Germans, what was not a problem until 1918, when Austria-Hungaria fall apart and Czechoslovakia was established. Border regions of Bohemia (and Moravia/Silesia) inhabitated mostly by Germans tried to secede itself and join Austria (they do not want do be a part of mostly slavic state of Czechoslovakia), but this attempt was suppressed. In 30ties the economical crises hit these regions (called Sudeten) much harder than innerland, because their industry was much more export-oriented. Then the secession movement of Germans rose again (this time towards German 3rd Reich; Karlsbad was even centre of the secession-yearning political party of Sudetendeutsche Partei) and by the Munich Treaty form September 1938 these regions became a part of Germany. Then WW II came with all of its horros. By its end, however, Karlsbad didn´t fell to the Russia (and anytime ever) - the city was captured by US army in 8th May 1945 and by russian Red Army in 11th May (river Eger was the dividing line between them). Yes, you are correct about expulsion of Germans and of (so called) Beneš decrets, however it was seen as the response and reaction on the germans war and even pre-war deeds against Czechs - and even for the Allies they were acceptable (with objections towards the most appalling deeds). Nowadays the Beneš decrets wouldn´t be admissible and (as one of czech politic said in 2013) Beneš itself would stand at ICC because of them. And, if you don´t know, the czech government has apologized for these things several times since 1993. You´re right about the big Russian minority at Karslbad (and I personally don´t like this fact), but Karlsbad is (as spa-town) very popular among Russians. I´m sorry, if you see Karlsbad as a thieves-lair, but it just your point of view. Tanner´s, Risa´s & Willa´s experience with Karlsbad is way different and (IMHO) much closer to the reality.
