Unlike the young people who know Betsy Palmer in the Friday 13th movies. I as an older person know her from IGAS in the 1960s. She was one of the sweetest , kindest .gentlest people and a clever panelist . I found it hard to believe she was chosen for such role , even at an older age. I would believe Bess Myerson doing that part over Palmer. But she was friends with Joan Crawford so they must have had a kindred Spirit. Anyway back in 1961 Palmer was touring in summer stock and my town was one of the stops. In our paper she was interviewed and said the state of TV drama at that time was NBC, nothing but cowboys. Meaning the serious drama was being replaced by various westerns.

Rusty was my best friend in elementary school. He tried to teach me some tricks with the top, but I was hopeless. He was great--and a really good guy. I love seeing this again.

Very bright and self-possessed kid. Do you know anything about his later life?

@@davidhogan7020 He was a good athlete-quarterback on our Pop Warner team, an excellent "A" student all through graduation. I lost touch with him as an adult, but spoke briefly with him a few years ago--don't know what he's up to these days. Still a really good guy.

Wish we could get the kids now to get away from video games and outside spinning tops. (Somebody would probably find something unsafe about it)

Dayton Allen could not only do Groucho, he voiced many classic cartoon stars like Deputy Dawg, Muskie Muskrat, and Heckle & Jeckle.

He's so cute!!! I never saw him as a grown-up until now. He looks younger to me then he did when I was a little girl!!

Do other viewers agree with me that Dayton Allen was a better Groucho improviser than impersonator? His replies had the requisite wit, but he really didn't do that good a job matching Groucho's unique vocal timbre. All the panelists could tell that the voice quality sounded muffled or contained.

I remember Dayton Allen had done his Groucho impersonation in a Terrytoon Heckle & Jeckle theatrical cartoon in the late 40s or early 50s. In this IGAS appearance, I agee he had the quick wit of Groucho and got plenty of laughs. The panel certainly did detect a difference in the vocal qualities. It's close to the original Groucho though.

Excellent observations and points here, Neil. I think that if...for example, Dayton Allen was doing a stand-up routine on a variety show, and he did his Groucho along with other voices, then I think that his impersonation would have been outstanding. There would be nothing to compare it to. But the panel and we, the audience were too close to it, and had been hearing the "real" Groucho just before this ploy; so then Dayton's Groucho really sounded different...higher pitched and faster-paced than the real Groucho. In retrospect, if Garry would have "framed" it to the panel, perhaps by telling them that Groucho is doing an audio experiment, testing different microphones or some such ruse; then I think it would have thrown them off enough. I think that even Frank Ferrante, who is superb and probably does the best Groucho (I have seen him LIVE); even he would still not 100% fool the panel, because there is always a slight difference. Let's face it...here is only one Groucho! Anyway, this was still fun. Excellent point about Dayton's quickness in ad lobbing character as Groucho. He had a lot of experience also doing several characters on Howdy Doody. Anyway, TV was so different then!

In the two Groucho's segment the impersonator got away with giving incorrect answers and he wasn't challenged by the moderator. Very unfair to the panelists
