I like it 👍
Cattails, the plants are cattails
The plants are meant to be cattails. They grow along the edges of lakes in the midwest US.
Don't forget that the Insect Ideas set also leans into the adult animals theme. We're also getting the giraffe 3in1 set.
I thought those are cattails and it turns out I was right
I found some wild glizzies...
Creator 3-in-1 Majestic Tiger 31129
The grow in Europe as well
Except cattails grow on straight reeds that may bend due to the weight, but they dont go all wavy crazy. While I like the set, the cattail reeds bug me.
I've never ordered anything this quickly in my life. Kingfishers are among my favorite animals and the price is absurdly good! What a treat!
Enjoy!
I really like it, but theres a big issue i cant unsee: the eye is WAY too high up, it just looks wrong. At least it doesnt seem too hard to change with a couple of spare pieces…
I definitely don't like the eye
Yeah
It is my biggest drawback tbh. It ruins it completly I think.
Agreed but it looks like it has a dark orange 1x2 or 2x2 under it so you could just take that out and put a dark blue 1x2 above it
Think they're a bit too small proportionally as well?
The brown plants look like they're meant to be cattails
Beautiful bird, made of beautiful bricks 🥲
On today's random thing I learned. It's called Bulrush in some places
The green stems with the brown stalks are called Cattails, or Water Sausages. You can cook them, but eating them raw is ill advised, as they will "explode" into hundreds of cotton-like seeds when opened. They are a common grass plant in swamps and mires.
As a bird lover I would eat up a series of bird sets. The bird kingdom holds so much variety they could make 1000 completely unique sets
I'd particularly love a red-tailed hawk or any bird of prey really
Imagine a painted bunting!!
Or a kestrel :D
I hope they do more sets like this, birdwatchers and backyard enthusiast would love sets like these.
Now this is what I expect from an Icons set. Great details and piece usage, and a fantastic display piece for collectors and adults. Perfect set and excited to pick this one up.
Lego simply finally realized that adults want real-life things in Lego, and that's why they're now releasing all of these sets such as plants, a telephone box, a bird, etc etc
I just built this, what a great time I had. And the finished model is absolutely beautiful. Looks wonderful everywhere around the house ❤
Love the review❤❤. The set looks great!
The price is definitely right. Good job LEGO
loving the small animal builds, cant wait for the squirrel 3-in-1 review !!
Color wise, the blue looks more like a belted kingfisher than the common kingfisher shown in the pictures, although lacks the "belt" pattern giving the bird the name.
I do think there has been an uptick in hobbyist birding and LEGO as a result of COVID and so more birds makes sense. Although as you note, not as popular as botanicals.
I believe this set is based on the ‘Azure Kingfisher’, which would explain the color and the lack of belt pattern.
It's strange, as the booklet states Azure Kingfisher (for which it includes information) but shows photos of Common Kingfisher. I figured the colour and patterning was basically intermediate between the two so could go either way, and as an ornithologist who prefers accuracy I rearranged some of the facial pieces to make it look more like an Azure Kingfisher (and lowered the eye by one piece as it looked really awkward) and I honestly think it looks much better.
Surprised they didn't make the technic pieces transparent. Maybe the plastic used is too brittle but that would have been nice to get a better floating effect. Stunning model.
The kingfisher (belted king fisher) is my favorite bird. Even have a sticker of it on my car. Now I need this.
I'm probably not going to get this one, but I definitely see with being the start of a great line to go with the botanical sets
i would love a line of more of these museum style animals
Very nice build
Great video been a fan since 2020
I just finished building this set and I do have to add that you need a lot of light to get the instructions sometimes 😅 The dark blue pieces kinda blend into each other in the instructions if it gets too "dark" in my opinion.
I would also like to add that while the build is fun, there is a lot of repeatition with all the water pieces and the set of wings.
I would absolutely love if lego started making more animal dioramas
LEGO Squirrel! LEGO Dog! LEGO Cat! LEGO Penguin! Make them all LEGO!!!!
@@TiagoCatarino Giraffes, Elephants, Flamingos, Mammuts!.... OMG DINOSAURS
Great video review.. keep coming
On my selling, I have a collection of lego birds (kids and adults) so I'm really excited for this
Turning that roof tile into a trans clear splash effect is inspired.
I love your video. Thank You.
Smyths had it discounted from £45 to £29 so immediately got one it’s stunning I love it
glad to see a well placed subscribe brick integrated into the sets capacities
reminds me alot of the old ideas set with the 3 different birds
Would have been great to include different colour tiles to make different types of Kingfishers, a bit like how you can make all three Delorean time machines.
Great Review.
A must-have for ornithologists and Lego fans I think.
I quite like it, the pose is great and the colors don't bother me that much either. The head and more particularly the eye though...that looks just way off. And I just can't unsee that anymore.
Also one thing I noticed was how much text there seems to be on the pagoda plates. Normally that wouldn't be noticeable, but now that they are transparent.....
I'm getting this for my office.
That big piece on the back... I can't get used to it. Also, the colors don't do justice to the actual bird.
1:35 plants are - Bulrush. Typha Angustifolia.
Interesting use of rounded pieces on the belly and on the back.
The chest of the bird could have looked a lot more dynamic if they had chosen more colors. With all of it being dark orange it ends up looking kinda 2D.
Must. Have.
Awesome set, great price
However the eyes aren't completely accurate, and the colors should be brighter
Looking forward to the rest of the fauna collection
By the color sheme, it seems to be a Azurfischer, an Australien Kingfischer branch. The european is more lighter in color with marble effect (Changierend) on its backside.
Check Wikipedia (can not href here).
In UK Cattails are called Bullrush.
Where I live we call those plants “cattails”.
Cool!
Space part two!! Space part two!!!😂😂😂
It'll be a while! 🫠
The king fisher is my favorite bird so seeing a Lego model like this one is amazing to me. However what holds me back is the chest area. To me it almost feels like a shield in front of the bird, it doesn't look organic. Also, as pointed out in the video, the colors are very dark compared to the real deal. Teal would've worked better as a base color I think. Still in doubt whether to get this or not.
My friend had a similar opinion:
It looks too bulky and flat, lacks the nimble sleek elegance of actual kingfishers.
(Maybe swap the colors and turn it into a kookaburra would be better lol)
As a birder, I gotta tell you: my people are nuts. Lego could make a FORTUNE off of us on realistic looking bird builds.
Amazing set will go nice with the insects set
I like it barring the colors
this is one of those sets, that i don't want. but i buy because it's cheap and i want alot of the elements when am i gonna get a bunch of unique parts in uncommon colors ever. at 50. while i won't buy it day 1, it'll def go in the list for when i need to reach a GWP threshold.
Are you going to review the Red Telephone Box? I want to buy it, but I would like to watch your review first!
I will eventually do it! But it might take a few weeks I'm afraid!
The plants are cattails, pretty much pond weeds EVERYWHERE in the US
Hmm. The thing that feels off to me is the thick transition between body and wing; I feel like the body should be a clear solid mass and stand apart more from a thinner more delicate wing. Maybe that would have been too delicate for LEGO's standards.
Many complain about the eye placement- I think the placement is ok, but that it needs to be more integrated into the curve of the head. The coloring on a Kingfisher makes it look like it has a furrowed brow, but this microphone ball looks robotic and lifeless. Unfortunately, eyes can really make or break artwork of any kind. There are many other lovely things to appreciate about this model, like you've outlined well in this video. Thanks!

Set!
Had $ leftover for lunch too 🤗
It could be an azure kingfisher and not a common kingfisher. Fun fact kingfishers are called isfugl (ice bird) in Danish, so it's definitely coming out in the right month.
The plants look like sausages, don't they? I believe they are called reed, cattail, or punks, but they don't look like cats' tails very much.
The plants are naturally growing corndogs. Common in wetlands and state fairs in the midwestern USA.
Hi tiago! I wondered what is a good price per piece?
It depends. As a rule of thumb, a set with a PPP of 10cents a piece is usually “fair” unless there’s loads of tiny 1x1 elements. Less than 10 cents pp is usually considered good, higher than 10 cents is kinda not. But again it always depends on what those pieces are, minifigs vs no minifigs, stickers vs prints etc.
Water Sausage is the name of the plant, or "cattail" if your a nerd ☝️🤓
If theyre gonna branch out from plants to make animals, i hope they also give that treatment to the speed champions and put out more models of planes at affordable price points
The plants are Typha latifolia - Bullrush!
I’d be curious to see where these sets go… a Blue Jay, hawk or falcon set might be cool (a Peregrine falcon that can be posed in a dive would be cool, as the dive makes them the fastest animals on the planet (386km/h).
We got a blue Jay before with the Ideas bird set. But a larger more detailed version would certainly look great.
There is a big mistake with the instructions. The species in the photograph is the Common Kingfisher, not the Azure Kingfisher. The Azure kingfisher is a lot more deep blue in colour and less orange. The species in the build is also not an Azure Kingfisher. Whilst the colours are darker, the build is a Common Kingfisher as it has a light blue back. So both the pictures and build are not an Azure Kingfisher, but a Common Kingfisher.
Glad to see someone else picked up on this! I personally thought the colours are pretty much halfway between Azure and Common Kingfisher, and moved around some of the facial elements (including lowering the eye by one piece) to make it look more like Azure Kingfisher, and it honestly looks much better (and more accurate).
I think it would be cool to put it together with insect collection
Beautiful set 🤩
I have seen a kingfisher twice in my life
I guess to mimic the blue opalescent of the real bird, lots of the pieces would need to be, well, opalescent. Which would have made it at least double the price.
I hope they make a Kingfisher 9000
Insta bought this badboy
Bruh I loved this set! LEGO has got to release more sets that are animal and nature themed! I would love to see one of a whale!
is it life-sized though? it looks like it could be nearby
Real kingfishers of this type are a bit smaller but there are some species that are about this size or larger.
the only think i don't really like is the "orange" which looks too brownish.. in general the colours could have been brighter or more saturated, if you see a real kingfisher they are quite brigh after all...
The plants are Bullrushes or Cattails
Bulrushes...so yummy.
the permanent head tilt would bug me, why can't it turn?
The orange on the wings always reads as part of a really wide body so the look always looks off to me.
Yeah, the colors sadly make this a no for me. I _adore_ the coloration of real kingfishers, they are absolutely stunning and should have much more green and turquoise, not to mention how iridescent their plumage is.
A muted palette of brown with mainly a dark navy blue, and a bit of sky light blue on the back just doesn’t cut it there for me.
The wings seem too thick and the belly too smooth (no feather-like texture), but overall the set is really growing on me. Nice to see my favorite bird as the first from a possible series.
Bulrushes. The plants are called Bulrushes.
I worked on a park in my city. The park is so populated by king fishers that they became like a mascot. So hearing that this set was being made had me smileing. But seeing it...nah it ain't it. Not just the colors but the head is so blocky. And the back...cmon man, its to bright and its just a blue blob
If TikTok has taught me anything, its that those plants are hotdogs, and should be eaten
I’m not familiar nor seen a Kingfisher in my life. I doubt I’ll pick this up
noice
The color seems too brown but overall it seems value for money.
I don’t know, this one does very little for me. I much prefer the insect set.
Those are cattails, they’re not good for eating.
Thanks Tiago for a review you convinced me not to buy it
Glad I could help! 😂
Not my thing sadly, will give this a miss, I prefer to buy classic lego themes ie pirates, Western, Castle and Adventurers
Completely subjective opinion, but i easily reject these types of sets. They all miss the quintessential "fun" or "awesome" that everything before has, so feels a bit trying too hard. Obviously they're for a different lego demographic than me.
i have to agree i dont think the icons birds will be that good, i dont see myself buying this one if its not on sale
Is it just me or does the wings make the bird look fat
Wrong blue colour Lego!!
Not feeling the light blue back pieces, together they almost look like a jet pack. Also, the main piece being so big and smooth makes the bird's back look weirdly untextured imo.
Idk, it just looks weird.
interesting model however it just looks ugly for display
The placement of the eye is atrocious and ruins it completly in my opinion.
I had high hopes for this, but was utterly disappointed when i saw it. thos eyes are just completely wrong and ruin the entire look of the build for me.
first
it isnt really looking like a kingfisher the weings are way off...
