Not Smart Enough for Nursing School? Here's the truth

  • Not smart enough for nursing school? That's one of the biggest fears that people have before applying to nursing school. It could even hold you back from achieving your dream of becoming a nurse.
Here's the truth: nursing school can definitely be challenging. There are some courses you will probably find difficult. However, the hardest part, in my opinion, was not so much the content.
The hardest part for me was finding the time and energy to accomplish it all and manage my time wisely. But that's also good news, because you can learn to manage your time and adapt to those things.
Many nurses working today had the same fear of nursing school, but they pursued it and gave it their best shot. Guess what? Today they are working as nurses.
Don't let your fears hold you back from nursing school. You might find out that you are much smarter than you thought!

I was not a great student in High school but I’d say I’m an above average nursing student so far; 3rd quarter and haven’t failed an exam yet, infact have only had 2 exams where I scored below an 80. Pharm? No problem, I got an 88 average give me meds I’ll calculate them for you all day, I’ve always read med labels growing up, lol 🤞

After struggling through traditional college for 6-7 years, I was in nursing school-two year ASN track at 23 and flunked out after personal stress and financial issues. I put on a brave face, but,I felt buried everyday. Before getting into this particular program, I brought my gpa up from a 2.5 to 3.4 in 2-3 semesters. I worked, lived with a verbally abusive family member, who was having their own health problems, a dying uncle who meant the world to me, a mother who was injured and relied on me to help with my teenage brother and no means to study in silence or in groups when I needed to. After failing, I never really left the house for 4 years after. I slept, watch anime or C or kdramas. I buried myself. It wasn’t just depression, it was burnout. My heart couldn’t take everything the world was asking of me. Eventually, at 27 years old and 30 pounds heavier, around the tail end of 2019/2020, I found myself enrolled in another school a private one known for Medicine and music. I’m on the 1 year accelerated track for my BSN. I have a 3.9. I got my first B because I got Covid-19. I’m struggling again because the school is so expensive. But, I won’t give up. I’ll finish this. Then, I’ll become a doctor.

This is absolutely true! When I began my pre-nursing degree, I wanted to quit after the first day of Biology for Majors, not because it was actually too hard but because I was trying to convince myself I wasn’t smart enough. Well, I have just recently graduated nursing school, passed my NCLEX, and start my job as a new grad RN next month!! So whoever is reading this, just know you absolutely can do it!!! Like she said, if the passion is there, that’s the biggest thing! Nursing school definitely isn’t easy but it’s manageable!! You can do it ❤️

It's all about organization! I feel like nursing school really shows you how to organize and prioritize, as well as being flexible. If you make the time to really read/study and get all your assignments done, you'll be successful. Also please make friends with your classmates, the friendships I've made so far have been invaluable as I go through nursing school.

Truth. Did not apply myself to grade school at all but in college got all As and Bs. I made it I to nursing school my round but I was still terrified. I got the first A of my class but like you said the hardest part was the time management. I didn’t sleep much, I cried, I felt like I had no social life. But my study group of 2 girls and a guy and me made an amazing team. We each tackled sections of the study guide and made notes and distributed it during our study meetings. We taught each other the parts we had or asked for help to understand. We had each other and are now friends for life. It’s hard and it feels impossible at times but get yourself a good group and you can do it.

I am in an accelerated ADN program. My classmates come from all different backgrounds. The students who are having the most difficulty are the ones who don't put in the time to study, whether due to other obligations (family/work) or because they think that their intelligence will carry them. Learn to study. Learn what works for you, and how you can maximize your study time. Learn how to take tests, especially the testing that's similar to how the NCLEX will be. Put in the time.
Find a program that will work for you. I couldn't sit around on a wait-list for 2 years after taking 2 years of prerequisites, so I found a program that didn't require them, they're rolled into the curriculum. It's expensive, but I'll earn it back in a year and a half because of the difference in pay between my old job and RN pay. Maybe take one or two classes at a community college to see if you'll be able to fit studying into your schedule. Don't wait - just start and see how far you'll be in 5 years. It flies by.

You don't need to be smart to work towards your RN. You need to have the dedication, time management skills, and organization skills to work and that is it. In terms of studying, you will do HUNDREDS of review questions every single day and with rote memorization you will learn concepts just by taking the time to study.

If you wait for everything to be perfect before you try to go to school - it will never happen. Set a course. Make a plan & just don’t stop. You WILL fail (something) - a test, a whole course, a portion of a clinical. Just never give up!
The only ones who FAIL are the ones who sit on the couch watching Netflix & wishing things were better!

I was never a great student, I can’t tell you how many people doubted me, but nursing school was the first time I truly excelled as one of the better students. It helped that the genius kids from high school and college didn’t go to nursing school, but it’s so much different when you’re learning interesting information that you get to apply at clinical and actually see how important most of what you learn is. Don’t be upset if you struggle in anatomy and physiology, the prerequisites are the most challenging part. Once you start real nursing classes it’s basically a test to see how determined you are and how bad you want it. Once you make it past the first semester you’re golden. Most of the people who fail a class fail first semester because they’re trying to weed people out. But anyone who is dedicated and determined can make it. Statistically the average nurse has average intelligence. It’s also essential to have a couple friends to help keep you in the loop, or tell you how the test was if they took it before you. Most of the girls will tell each other questions they remember so you’re at a big disadvantage if you think you should be a goody two shoes.

I was a 4.0 student before going into nursing school and was devastated when I got C’s all throughout nursing school. I even failed my exit exam once. But I kept going and passed my NCLEX first try! A lot of the people who got straight A’s in my program failed their first try at NCLEX. It’s not going to be an easy road but if you don’t give up you’ll get there! Your journey shouldn’t be defined by anyone else’s. Don’t give up hope! ❤❤

NGL managing it is hard. But also it the critical thinking for me. I struggled with that but got better at it. Starting my third semester. Kinda nervous 😬. I started in my senior year managing both high school classes and nursing. C/O 2022.

This was 100% me, I told myself for years that I was not smart enough to go back to school. This past year I found out that my employer would pay a portion of my tuition, so I said that I would give it a try. I am just starting my 3rd quarter with a 4.0, and on the Presidents list. I have amazed myself with all that I have done so far and I can not wait to see what all I will accomplish.

I went from feeling like this to consistently getting the highest grade on exams. Now I’m graduating in December and have an externship ans preceptorship on the progressive care unit! It really is only you holding yourself back. You just have to put your mind, heart, and life into it to make it happen! If you’re not willing to make it your everything for at least a couple years then be honest with yourself and maybe think of another career

Nursing school can be intense. The material one is exposed to may not be always be impossibly difficult, however the amount of information one must understand VERY quickly and retain in GREAT detail is not for the faint hearted.

Back in the day when I attended a hospital school of nursing we did four hours of classroom in the a.m. and then did four hours right in the wards after lunch. In year two those times went to six hours classroom and eight hours clinical. In two years we packed as much if not more practce in than four years in college. Yes, I did eventually go on for my BS and MSN but never felt those years as tough and content filled as the first two. Though I'm now retired I still keep up my CEUs out of continued interest, but for new nurses I'd love to see the old immediate style of training return. I'd also like the eight hour shift to come back. Research shows human ability begins to lag after nine to ten hours. That slight dip in ability or concentration could be the difference between life and death.
