      @@craigd9840 I agree to an extent
      Yes making life hard for someone daily makes them not want to be there
      But when I was 17, the first 3/4 years on site were hell and I almost quit many times
      But I think those years made me the worker I am today
      It’s a bit like the army
      If it doesn’t break you it’ll make you

    Since i started my company in 1987, i have trained and helped train 14 apprentices 13 have qualified including my 3 daughters, and i currently have 2 more at the moment. Seeing the way you talk to drew and teach him, is exactly the way it should be done and the way i hope i train the next generation of sparks working for me. You are a credit sir, and at such a young age, you have certainly got a promising career ahead of you. Keep it up and keep the great vids coming.

    Iv been laying bricks 30 years so I'm an old fart 😅, trust me you are doing the right thing I remember the days like you that I just loved laying Bricks, wanted to be the fastest and neatest. Non of us want to take the responsibility of supervisor but If you are good at what you do it just happens. I'm now running massive multi million pound jobs in London and have been for 10 years with one of the biggest brickwork contractors out there. It's hard and I don't lay Bricks but I'm passing my knowledge to other people which is good. I'd love to be house building it's such an simple process and the buzz of a small gang working and having the craic is fantastic. Good luck mate and keep up the good content as it's so different from what I do and it reminds me of the good old days. 👍

    Great Vid Izzy. I run my own business (Gen Builder) its a major step up from just laying, but being in control has its benefits, its not easy, its time consuming but when you get customers loving what you've built its very satisfying. You have proved yourself to be more than capable of doing the Foremans job, rectifying poor brickwork and levels when 1st on site, your organised and have a great work ethic. Your a credit to the industry. Take the challenge and run with it, the experience will be worth it.

    Love the staying positive Izzy and yes the paperwork, wages and all that has to go with it as you grow. Time and time again I use to leave that to just lay some bricks to clear the head. As you grow buddy maybe think, as I did, which again is more money, but worth it, employ a good QS, the time and agro that saves is well worth it. Keep it neat, fast and plumb which is all I see at the minute, so well done buddy. Maybe time to think of getting your own wheelbarrow scaffold fixed hoist, again well worth the money, and a very good forward looking health thought to save a lot of lumping and leg work.

      @@IzzytheBricky . No problem at all buddy 😁. Hope this week hasn’t wrecked your head too much . When I was an apprentice we had got a big detached up to plate, it had four windows 2 up 2 down and a big central arched window on the stairs . Brick up to joist then block and render above to have Tudor timbers on top ( 🤢it was the eighties 🤣🤣) anyway one night after a howler the whole front blew in and took most of the Floor with it, 😱 good job it happened over night. Anyway my grumpy boss was very grumpy that week .
      It’s a horrible feeling finding it and gut wrenching re building the same wall .

    Hi Izzy, you asked a question as to why us non bricklaying viewers watch your channel, well, I had 2 older brothers who were bricklayers and I wanted to follow in their footsteps, but because I was the brains in the family ( cough) they talked me into becoming a plumber. Later in life it became obvious that they thought that they could get a plumber on the cheap!!!

    My workplace closed down few weeks ago I was there nearly 8 years and I was made redundant so I've decided to take a few weeks to try and clear my head and redecorate / repair my house and I was considering trying to do a apprenticeship in brick laying I'm a 34 year old father of 2 so I was working 6-2 so I can pick my kids up and be home before my wife leaves for work and currently don't drive fingers crossed I can get my licence would my age or any circumstances go against me when it comes to applying for a apprenticeship loving watching the videos to pick up some little tips

      @IzzytheBricky  Před rokem

      Hi mate, sorry for the late reply! Very unfortunate that you've been made redundant, hope things are picking up for you! If your interested in becoming a Bricklayer, I would suggest becoming a "hod carrier" first. While your labouring, you can pick up the trowel and learn like that!💪 All the best, any questions just give me a message brother

    Yet another awesome video. Useful tips but also some behind the scenes and what it involves to take responsibility. I actually started my brick apprenticeship because I have had a lot of stress, management and responsibility previously and I just want an easier life and to enjoy the bricks! I got offered trainee site manager a couple of weeks back and I turned it down, to their absolute shock! Good to get your honesty and I would say with 100% certainty that you are up for the task on this one! Keep it up! Jen 💥

    I'm not in the industry. I left school and went into an apprenticeship was bullied gave up the trade. Was nailed to the walls, had expanding foam in my hair and had the p**s taken out of me. You're really good mentor for the apprentice's.
    I now run my company in a completely different industry. Has inspired me to take on a T level work experience. I'm crazy busy, so just trying to workout if I can afford the time they deserve.

    When i was a first year apprentice i had this forman that used to yell if you hit the brick more then twice with your trowel to get the brick down to the line. He says if you hit the brick with your trowel more then twice you are not laying brick right and you are wasting the companys money because you are taking to much time laying the brick, but i was always told by the union that as a apprentice your job is to lay the brick to the line no matter how long it takes. The forman is a company man and wants bricks to be laid fast.

    I'm not a brickie but I still watch every week. I used to fire bricks though. Eliistown Brick, now Ibstock Brick, early 90s. We used to make 1.1 to 1.2 million Class B Engineering bricks per week. I know what it's like shifting large amounts of bricks, if I had to scrap a whole kiln car that's over 50 ton of bricks into a skip in about 6 hours. Happy days, health is crap nowadays, live it to the max while you are young.

    • @Ogma3bandcamp
      @Ogma3bandcamp Před rokem

      @@IzzytheBricky Cheers Izzy mate. I should be clear, there'd be a gang of 4 of us scrapping a kiln car. I wasn't on my own. 2 lads on forklifts constantly bringing in and emptying skips. It didn't happen often either and there'd be a bollocking if it did.
      The whole process of making bricks was heavily mechanised.
      Basically, quarry clay on site, some of it came from Wales though in lorries, depending on if we are making red bricks or buff bricks. Clay goes into massive steel rollers to crush any rocks. Into extruder machine where it's forced under massive pressure into a brick shaped slug about 8ft long with perfs. Then a grid of wires like a line of cheese cutters comes down and chops the slug into individual bricks. 2 days drying. 2 days firing. Unloaded from kiln cars and made into packs - all mechanised. I reckon all brickies should see how they are made. And vice versa, all brickmakers should learn about what goes into bricklaying.
      Your videos are excellent mate, all the best Izzy.

    25:00 You're underestimating your audience there Izzy. I have no intention of watching scaffolding on CZcams after a gut full of nonsense at work. Great idea and good business to take control of work; inorder to stabilise workflow and money. Keep up the hard work, be reliable, reinvest your money and it will be all good. Get yourself a couple of pairs of Wireless BEATS Powerbeats Pro , perfect for talking and working. You can still hear once you have finished your call, so no need to take them out. @19:00 or there abouts, I couldn't agree more, I used a nine inch trowel with a nice rounded end for most, almost all of my career (cut down from an 11").
    Charlie tends to use a 8 to 9" trowel most of the time as well, all those huge trowels are for novices imo

    No fire cuts on wood beams? In the USA they are cut on an angle so top of beam is just to face of wall. That way if floor beams burn and pull downward the beam will just fall not jacking the wall up like a pry bar. That helps keep the masonry intact if theirs a 🔥
