Even as Christ experienced true humanity: the fear of death, mourning having to say goodbye to his Mother, willingly facing suffering, this line reminds us that Jesus was still Lord. Fully human as he experienced those real emotions and pain and fully God as he reminds us who made the stars and the skies. Just an insanely beautiful song for the Boss, capturing an insanely beautiful truth.

This was the last song we played at my mothers funeral two weeks ago. A few days after her passing, I read Bruces mother also had passed, the day after mine. It's a wonderful powerful song that means the world to me. Thank you, Bruce, for writing it.

I love the sentiment of your post, but John was not the brother of Jesus. There were four; James, Joseph(Joses), Simon, and Jude, according to Scripture. John only became the "son" of Mary on the death of Christ.
Jesus was the only begotten son.
Bruce explains in other places that the title is more metaphor - he acknowledges that Jesus had brothers but on this day to his mother, he was singular .. as a parent, that sentiment is understood.

This was what I had hoped Springsteen on Broadway would be like - even though that show was truly epic! Realized it did have to be scripted for a 5 day a week run- but VH1 show was a truer version of the man he is. Amazing , brilliant, personable and a legendary storyteller!

Good works in mysterious ways and is still making miracles. Many think because he’s not raising people from the dead that we have documentation of he has stopped. However my friends. Who would have ever thought that a sinner would be at a Bruce concert and he or she would hear this song and be saved and dedicate their lives to Jesus. Jesus was an only child but his brothers and sisters had greater bond with him even if they were not blood related. As an only child with some friends whom I basically consider brothers he is the only one to idolize 😁
