MIT professor: this new battery could change the world, these metals needed

  • In order to transition towards a fully renewable energy-based economy, the problem of intermittency in non-fossil fuel electricity generation first needs to be solved, said Donald Sadoway, professor of materials chemistry at MIT.
“I wanted something that was versatile and could go wherever you needed to have the gap, bridge, when the sun isn’t shining and wind isn’t blowing,” Sadoway told Kitco News.
Sadoway, who was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in 2012, had worked on new battery technologies that would solve this problem; he and his team at MIT created the liquid metal battery to be used for stationary energy storage.

sorry he's wrong about there not being any advantage to driving an EV in an all-coal energy area. Even if the electricity is generated by coal - it is still an benefit. Firstly those coal power stations are not in the middle of cities & so all those cars NOT producing exhaust fumes make the cities MUCH cleaner places. Secondly the petrol or diesel needed to drive a million cars is still MORE polluting than the electricity to drive a million cars, even if that electricity is produced by modern coal plants. EVs are MUCH more efficient for a start.
So even if it is coal powered electricity, there are still massive gains to be made by driving EVs.

David, you are talking to the wrong “expert”. Talk to Dr. Jeff Dahn, or Dr. Shirley Meng. The latter is at UC San Diego. Also you need to do more research on this topic. It is documented already that after several years a Tesla in manufacture and operation bests a ICE car. Also the cost of ownership of a Model 3 is less than a Toyota Camry. So it is definitely more carbon efficient now and will be even more so going forward to own and operate an EV than an ICE vehicle. It also has a lower cost of operation. As for mining, we need to have coal mining companies and miners transition from mining coal to mining nickel, lithium and graphite. Check out The Limiting Factor for very detailed battery technology and Solving The Money Problem and Tesla Daily for detailed Tesla and EV data. Thank you.

Coal is phasing out, as it should be. Natural gas turbines still make a lot of sense, being a helluva lot cleaner and low maintenance than coal-fired plants. Wind and solar have exceeded everyone's expectations from even just a decade ago, especially solar which makes significant advances just about weekly. In my estimate, nuclear is the future, the latest versions of which look _nothing_ like it did in 1980.

Solar is great for specific applications, especially stand alone applications. However, I don't see a time when the world runs as it does today without petroleum and coal barring either a revolution in nuclear or a totally new source of energy which is now unavailable to the general public. I calculated that to power the entire world at 2010 electrical power consumption levels with solar could be done if it were possible to get 100% efficiency (theoretical max being 85%) if we could also achieve zero transmission losses. We would only have to cover an area the size of Colorado with solar panels. Sounds totally plausible. I mean, how difficult would it be to pave the state of Colorado with solar panels? LOL! A lot could be done by improving efficiency of devices and systems. One huge loss of efficiency is transportation. I see the rise of 3d printing eventually ending the need for long distance transportation of lots of silly consumer products. Ground source heat pumps could really change the world. But unless some new kind of power, like zero point, is made available not much is changing.
