    The German knights that joined the crusade came from all over Germany not just the north. For instance I can see right now a old fort( altes Schloss Hohenbaden) from my bedroom window. And a lot of knights from there went to the holy land too the story is even carved in stone in the ruin

      Their base, Königsberg, was in the north so it is generally considered to be a north German order.

      he was speaking about the their presence in the crusader states - from that east mediterranean perspective the whole of Teutonia is pretty much the far north
      during their later campaigns in the northeastern german/baltic realm, a substantial number of seasonal participants were non-german foreigners and amongst the Germans in their ranks many were Swabians......who are indeed rather southgerman....

      Teutons and Teutonic order are not the same. The Teutonic order was made up of German knights from different parts of the German lands, while the Teutons were an old Germanic tribe which was exterminated by the Romans after years of war, leaving around 150,000 dead and a few thousand of enslaved ones. The order is called "German order" in German "Deutscher Orden", which is more fitting. But since Teutons were a word for the Germans as a whole for a long time by then, the order was called like it was outside of the German language.

    Teutonic knights? Their name is "Deutscher Ritterorden", "German knights
    order" is the correct translation. In German literature, they were German knights,
    nowhere they are called "Teutonische Ritter" "Teutonische Ritter" is in English
    "Teutonic knights". Strange, that "Teutonic knights" became their English name!
    The Teutons were a tribe which already before Cesar was beaten in northern
    Italy by the Romans and then never were heard of again.

      just read some truly old books ......preferably latin ones where "Germany" or anything "german" is mentioned ......
      teutonic is far closer to theodisc or deutsch (duits,tedesco,tysk etc) than "german"

    • @heinzfischer2710
      @heinzfischer2710 Před rokem

      @@MrEpicAndroid What is a "latin dialect"? French? I speak French fluently.
      Their French name is "chevaliers allemand", "German knights". "Ordre de chavaliers allemands" would be the perfect translation. LIke Templars and Hospitallers they were both a religious as a military order. The rule of their order was nearly a copy of the rules of the Templars. The French translation is much more correct than the Engish "Teutonic". The Teutons were a tribe beaten and dispersed by the Romans before the time of Julius Cesar.
      Probably this "Teutonic" is an expression of disgust which shall depict them as primitive. After all the Teuton tribe was beaten by Sulla more than a 1000 years earlier. Even in German language "Teutonisch" has a connotation of primitive and backward.
      "Deutsch" is "German" in English, and "Ritterorden" "knights order." About the correct translation there can be no doubt. Why in English-speaking literature this Teuton tribe is resurrected remains unclear.

    • @heinzfischer2710
      @heinzfischer2710 Před rokem

      @@MrEpicAndroid This has nothing to do with a latin dialect. In French they are called "chevalier allemands", only rarely "chevaliers teutoniques". So "German knights". It remains an enigma where this "teutonic" comes from. I don't like this expression. "Teutonisch" at any rate in German language is a contemptive word for primitive, oldfashioned, backward, but of some German tradition. Maybe this connotation does not exist in other languages.
