WHO IS BUNCHARTED?
We're Michelle and Alex, a travel-obsessed American couple living abroad in the Netherlands.
In 2020, we quit our jobs to travel the world, and... yeah, that didn't happen. So in 2022, we decided to make an even BIGGER change, packing up our lives (and our cats 🐈), moving from Austin, Texas, to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Subscribe for new videos like this every week!
The best stroopwafels are always found on markets.😉 In any city.
Bought one in Leiden.. it was terrible.. no taste at all.
The cookie at 4:06 looks more like a stroopkoek (syrup cookie) than a stroopwafel (syrup waffle). Stroopkoeken are also very nice, especially with a cup of hot chocolate milk.
totally agree! i’m by no means an expert but i was considering not covering it in the video because it didn’t seem like a proper stroopwafel. that said, the menu said they were stroopwafels, so… here we are 😂
I was about to say this. It is a stroopwafel it's a stroopkoek
betaalden jullie nou serieus ergens 10euro voor een stroopwafel??? Of snapte ik het verkeerd? Beetje late reactie, maar zie het nu pas voorbij komen@@buncharted
At every slightly larger market in the Netherlands you can buy delicious freshly made stroopwafels for a reasonable price. Amsterdam is an amusement park with extraterrestrial tourist prices (and said that by an Amsterdammer) :-)
I totally agree, EUR 10 for a stroopwafel is insane, no Dutchie would pay that 😮
Albert Heijn has several brands. The best is its house brand that are sold per 8 in a carton and wrapped in translucent plastic. These are actually elected as best stroopwafels by the Dutch consumer organisation. I shortly warm them up in a frying pan on both sides until the interior becomes soft. Don't eat them right out of the pan though, because the cookie will be soft due to the heat. Let it sit (outside the hot pan) for a minute or two. The cookie will cool down and become crunchy, while the interior (the sirop) is still warm and soft!
Stroopwafels from the supermarket are so so, you have to warm them up over a cup of tea than they are ready to eat, try it! 👍
they're great in a pinch!
That is actually an urban legend: they only get wet like that. Heat them shortly in a frying pan and they ate like straight from the market (provided they are not the cheapest in the supermarket)
Stroopwafel connoisseurs 😂 Just go to your local week market for a warm stroopwafel.
Lanskroon stroopwafel looks more like a stroopkoek really, which is also a thing here! When I was in highschool I was binging stroopkoeken daily. They can be so so good.
yeah! it’s funny their menu calls them stroopwafels though. maybe for tourists?
@@buncharted Yeah could be! When Googling it you will actually find stroopwafels and stroopkoeken when you search for them. I guess they can call it either way (?) The taste is completely different though usually.
Making notes as I'm watching this! My wife & daughter (and maybe me too) LOVE stroopwafels [at least the imported stuff we get in SA] - so we can't wait to try this IN the Netherlands later this year 🙂
yay - so glad we can help! it was eye-opening for us as well :)
Please don’t get trapped in the tourist ‘specials’. Go where the locals go
@@buncharted Do as the locals do, even if it looks silly. You will not bump your head as we say.
The *doe maar gewoon dan doe je al gek genoeg" attitude at van wonderen is about as Dutch as you can get! 😂❤ The 10 euro "stroopwafel" even looked like a choking hazard!!
I took my family in law to the same stroopwafel place in the Albert Kuypstraat and im😢 thrilled to see I picked correct.
We really likes this video you're very very committed.
thank you!
You really need to find the stroopwafer crumble bag on the market, the best !
we got them in gouda! they're so good!
Gouda stroopwafel capital
You visit punsilie waffle factory?
Thank you for that laugh re: 1999. I needed that. “Possibly the least impressive date that we’ve shared on the video so far.” 😂
9:43 - Yes, you did it for science 🙂 Well done, great research .. seriously.
I lived in Gouda as a kid until I was 10 and then emigrated to Canada. Almost every Saturday I would go to the Korte Tiendeweg in Gouda and pick up a bag of "snippertjes" which were the pieces on the edge of the stroopwafel that were cut off. I remember paying about 5 cents for that and another 10 cents for a Donald Duck comic, and I was in pure heaven! I didn't know that they were invented in Gouda!!
This is wonderful! I have the exact same childhood memory. I’m likely a bit younger because I remember them being a bit more expensive (15 cents for a small bag-which was actually quite large).
we also love the stroopwafel bits! we picked up a bag when we were in gouda :)
I got those every wednesday when i went by the market on my way to primary school. 25ct for a bag of crumbs and the best treat was for an extra 25ct you would get a scoop of warm syrup in the bag of crumbs. Oh the goodness. This wasn’t in Gouda by the way
10 EURO VOOR EEN STROOPWAFEL??? Gekkenhuis …
En het dan verliezen van een massa geproduceerde supermarkt versie...
🤣🤣🤣 10 euro voor een stroopwafel…echt een giller🤪
Well done. 👍👍 You debunked the fancy shop wih a bad stroopwafel for 10 euro!!! That's a total scam. The good old market stand came on top. I could have known that.
Having moved to Utrecht from Chicago a year ago it’s nice to watch your videos and see you enjoy and struggle with the same things that I do :-)
10 euro's, is there 24k goldpowder in the receipy?
that would explain why it was so powdery 😂
@@buncharted LOL🤣
Great review👍The result of your expedition in Amsterdam was on the spot I think 😊
As far as the plain 10-in-a-sack stroopwafels go, the Hema gets my vote.
Sidenote: I loved buying stroopwafels in the supermarket but this year's (approx.) 20% price increase has really been rubbing me the wrong way.
Next up, Lage Vuursche. The tiny forest town that runs on Poffertjes and Pancakes. There's something like 6 poffertjes/pancake restaurants in a 100 meter stretch. There's not a whole lot else there. It's poffertjes or forest. And there's (tiny) castle Drakensteyn. No, not that Dragonstone. Pincess Beatrix lives there. And no, her home isn't open to the public.
the commitment, overwhelming ;-)
worth it, except for the tiktok place 😅
Next time you pick stroopwafels from Albert Heijn, take the ones that are on display at the bakery and packed in an open box, wrapped in a cellophane bag, 8 pcs. in the box (currently at 2.39 in the webshop for the box of 8 pcs)
These are way better than the average ones you find in the cookie aisle !!
Just wondering how much you paid for the Egstorf stroopwafel ? It looks pretty luxurious and must have costed quite a few Euro's too ??
ooh - good to know!
the egsdorf stroopwafel was 7 euros - definitely a premium but it was alex’s favorite of the day (and still cheaper than van wonderen!)
Totally agree with you! Those are my go-to stroopwafels.
We heat the stroopwafel by placing it on a hot cup of coffee before eating, so that the syrup can melt a little. Better for comparison and taste.
You picked our favorite place! We imagined the store bought ones to taste like the ones at Trader Joe’s. Lol
Thanks for the thorough research and for spending €10 on that last one. That's the tourist experience! As Texans, don't you think that stroopwafels are tiny? Shouldn't they be pizza size? There are mini-versions that are even tinier. No idea of their purpose. Luckily they can be stacked.
haha - some of the ones in this video were quite large! but size doesn't matter when it comes to stroopwafel 😂
Rudi's on the market was the first and only one for years on the market and by far the best in Amsterdam!
I think there is also a difference in the waffle's taste by using butter or margarine.
btw, you guys are becoming the 1st "stroopwafel connoisseurs" (had to google that spelling 3 times) of the Netherlands.😄
I wonder what Google search gave you the spelling connoisseur :) connaisseur ;)
My favorite stroopwafel in Amsterdam is in Rotterdam on the Saturday market, near Blaak. 😊
haha - i actually haven't tried any of the stroopwafels at the saturday market here. i'll have to scope that one out :) (i'm usually too obsessed with frites or grilled corn...)
You forgot to try the best supermarkt stroopwafels: Kanjers! Just try them! Very good, even though the best stroopwafels are the ones you can buy freshly made and still warm on every farmers market in all Dutch cities
Lindengracht markt on Saturdays
Go to Gouda, that’s where they come from. Also beautiful city centre
we just posted a vlog there a couple of weeks ago! an absolutely beautiful city ❤️
@@buncharted very nice! Last year we got married in the old townhall in Gouda.
Lidl has many stores in the USA as well but only concentrated in the east of the country. I have bought real Dutch stroopwafels in the USA at Lidl, Aldi, Costco, Walmart and even Ross Dress for Less. They charge about double the price compared to the Netherlands but it’s worth it and considered the shipping, they wont make that much more of a profit (I think)…
Both Lidl and Aldi recently won place 1 and 2 in the AD (Dutch news paper that is famous for oliebollen/herring/etc tests) stroopwafel test! They are produced in the vicinity of Gouda and have real butter in their dough and syrup (no margarine).
Amazing that you managed to find something in the Albert Hein.😂❤
this was thankfully filmed before the strike :)
@@buncharted 😃
The cookie is that good.
As for supermarket stroopwafels .. Lidl is best.. than Jumbo. But Rudie is the best one indeed, eventhough it didn't look that warm.. I hardly saw a caramel pull.
there’s a glob that dripped out onto the napkin 😂
can’t believe we missed out on lidl!!
The best you get fresh from the market. But best from the supermarket in my opinion are the Kanjers stroopwafels. Kanjers is a brand. Put them in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds before eating. Not any longer. Enjoy!
At Albert Hein you should try the "Fresh" stroopwafels , those are better than the ones you tried.
Next up:
Best pancakes
Best ice cream
Best poffertjes
Best tompouce (and how to eat it 😉)
Best rookworst
Best kibbeling
Wait what? was 1 stroopwafel over 10 euro?:O
YES!!!!!!!!!!! 😭
Dat is puur afzetterij.
Wow impressive clean audio on a busy street! What mic are you using? Also as a waffle fan, this is the content I need!! You should do one in Brussels!
rode video mic go ii 😄
@@buncharted ah the good old rode video mic! What a warhorse!
Recently had Kibbeling in Amsterdam, worst we ever had, it was warmed in an airfryer (!). Also somewhere else a cup of hot chocelate, also the worst ever. Tasted like tea, so bad.
oh man, that's awful. we've found some great food in amsterdam but there are a lot of places, especially in the really touristy parts of town, that just aren't good.
Sorry to hear that, try to do some research because some stands and cafés are godawful.
@@noabakker3848 yeah, when going to such a city, i am not going to do research for a drink and a snack.... If i would remember where it was I would have posted a bad review on google maps. But I don t.
@@thepuma2012 esp the fish stands can be well fishy :D
you hav to check stroopwafels in Gouda
we do in our gouda video! 😋
Crazy that you can find stroopwaffles at Wal Mart in the states but not at a Lidl in the Netherlands.
it sounds like they do typically have them. the store we went to must have run out though :(
Van Wonderen is the Americanization of stroopwafels ;-) Customizable and in different sizes but nothing authentic and over priced. We Dutchies like things to be consistent and steady and original.
it's the coldstone creamery of stroopwafel :)
Helemaal mee eens!
Thanks for your content guys 😊 I have a question: what you do for living? I'm asking because I want to move in Netherlands and change profession.
tech consulting - mostly marketing :)
@@buncharted Thanks for answer 🙏
10 euro's for a stoopwafel!! That is bizar.
LOL, Americans teaching me more Dutch stuff than the Dutch themselves 😅
😉
❤️❤️❤️
How does the Gouda stroopwafel compare with this episode's winner?
i (alex) prefer the gouda stroopwafel over all of the ones that we tried in this video. the hans egsdorf one was my favorite of this bunch, which tasted the most like the one we had in gouda.
i think michelle preferred rudi's though (it's sweeter and softer).
😉😊
f up prices in amsterdam absurd gewoon
😂
Like always tourists get robbed. 10 euro for a stroopwafel
but they don't have to be! rudi's was only 2.50!
Hi, I'm really interested what brought two Americans from Austin, Texas, to such a tiny country, the Netherlands. Of all the countries to choose from, I'm curious how you guys came to this decision. I am also interested in the motivation to move and travel the world in the first place. Are you guys missing the vast kinds of foods and chains you had in Austin, Texas? All the taco bells, steak houses, shake shacks, etc.
we're actually originally from ohio, just most recently from austin, texas 😄 and austin isn't like the rest of texas, mostly full of hip restaurants and the like, but they did have great tacos, and we do miss those sometimes!
we love the netherlands - beautiful country with great infrastructure. and they offer a visa program for freelancers (which michelle and i are), so it was easy to move!
@@buncharted Good morning. I see.. Sorry to hear what happened in Ohio the other day... Something about a chemical spill... I also heard Austin, Texas is a hip hub for content creators and influencers now as well. Regardless, I'm glad you are enjoying the Netherlands and if there are any things you'd like to know about the culture and things to do, I'm all ears. Have you guys for instance participated in Carnaval yet? It's an annual tradition/event celebrated in the province Noord-Brabant and surrounding areas. It's also literally what you might think it is; an event where people dress up and drink lots of alcohol and party. But in the city Den Bosch, where the heart of the event is, its a bit more nuanced. There's plenty to discover about it. Highly recommend you guys try it out. It's a 4 day event(fri-mon) and usually celebrated in February.
Stroopwafel
Ah yess...Windmills...wooden shoes.... stroopwafels.....en de Belastingdienst
😂😂😂
Stroopwafels ought to be eaten "warm" and fresh... usually that's not the case. For a good comparisson the Stroopwafels ought to be tested at about the same temperature and fresh.
BTW the disappointing experience with the tiktok Stroopwafel might be caused by the increased pressure to make them quickly. But the price of €10,- is outrageous !! That's what we in the Netherlands call "woekerprijs" . Look that one up in the dictionary... your next Dutch word ;)
love your videos, have you been to Eindhoven, great town been there 3 times this year. it is Gouda not Houda
we've only passed through the train station - we'll have to see it soon!
Shame that Lidl didn't have stroopwafels. They usually do. I live in Gouda and I apart from freshly made on the weekly market I like the Lidl stroopwafels best.
we're pretty sure we saw the spot for them on the shelf. they must have been sold out :(
Have you ever heard of the amazing stroopwafels they where a dutch band who made some good dutch songs chech them out
My god 10 Euros, well i never paid that for any stroopwafel ever, and won't also. Just on the market is good, but im happy with the ones in the supermarkets, but because they have so much choice you do need to pick out the most plain ones no weird additions like butter or whatever. I had chili-mango flavored ones, one time from the supermarket that was surprisingly good but they stopped producing them so plain ones it is :)
chili mango stroopwafels??? we must try those!
Apparently they are meant to contain more spices than supermarkets use because it's cheaper to leave them out. i think most supermakets have a good basic one in stock that's buttery and nice enough but then you get some fancier brands that are ironically worse. Like the one that makes mini ones, they are dry and weird. Good ones can look terrible because they leaked a bit in the bag and then they are stuck together on the edges. I wouldn't expect to be paying a lot for a bag of them. Putting chocolate or other things on them sounds like a waste to me.
€10 for a stroopwafel😂 and people stand in line? Then it must be good🤣🤣🤣
there are very few things i've happily waited in a line for 😄
It would be nice if, in addition to stroopwafel, you would also pronounce Amsterdam correctly, you say Emsterdem! ❤️
You cheated yourselves out of one great chocolate cookie, that line has been there for years now, because they are THAT good. Next time you come to Amsterdam please film the lines in front of the Anne Frank house and the van Gogh museum. Those are the places that really deserve the attention.
Imagine working in a stroopwafel shop that sells stroopwafels for almost the same price as your hourly wage..
omg, i know right?
Beware of some extremely exaggerated tourist prices! A couple of € is more than enough for one big stroopwafel. 10€ is a giant scam.
Stroopwafel addicted?
Really, I just have to mention it. Since you have visited so many places in the Netherlands...have you also checked house prices. Because many of us Dutch people are shocked to hear you pay 2300 euro's for rent. For that amount you can rent a mansion. Or even better own a home bigger than what you have and pay less on mortgage. My home is probably just as big if not bigger than your appartement and I pay around 800 euro's. (still quite high) I just feel like you are being taken advantage of because you are an expat. Oh and I just wanted to comment on the AH stroop wafel. You can buy different brands there. Kanjers is a good brand.
our lease is up at the end of the summer. we've been looking for rentals to move to but the housing shortage has made it pretty challenging to find another place. we do want to buy a house, but are waiting for our residence permit renewal at the end of 2024.
we are probably being taken advantage of, but it's just temporary. it's what we needed to do to move to the netherlands, so we're still glad we did it :)
in Amsterdam that's a normal price, expat or not. Even from the woningcorporatie you pay at least 1700 eur for a regular apartment these days.
I think your evaluation is not conpletely objective without taking the price into accoun, ecept for the last one. We dutchies want it also cheap.
oh, it was included in our judgment, even if it wasn't one of our evaluating criteria. it was hard to not judge price when van wonderen was 10 euros and rudi's was only 2.50 😅
A €10 stroopwafel should have weed in it.
I dont think you can use a color to discribe a flavor, unless youre in The Netherlands.
haha - brown?
10 euros? Only in Amsterdam. Sounds like a touristtrap to me.
so true!
10 euro's for something like that is a rip off. And not even good either. You should expect a high quality item and if it was absolutely amazing it might justify the high price.
100%
So, are you really surprised? If anything it is clear you do not get anything that is 'best' on tictoc. The drainpipe of the Internet.
You ran into a tourist trap. The same for crepes with Nutella. A rip off as well. Eat where the locals eat. Dutch will not be cheated over the price of a stroopwafel.
Right groene loper. You can get like 30 quality stroopwafels for the same price in a bakery.
T E N euro’s! Too much.
Why Amsterdam ?
most touristic city in the netherlands - best chance to find some overrated spots 😆
Amsterdam = pannekoeken.
Especially when first name is 'Marco'.
Tourist are dumb to buy those expensive stroopwafels. Just go to the Hema (personal favorite) or any supermarket and buy a pack for a few coins. If you want it warm, just put it 5-10 seconds in a microwave.
10 euro’s or more for a stroopwafel? That’s a tourist rip-off.
yup!
Don't get stroopwafels with anything on it
never
