Hi Katarina, ich komme auch aus der ehemaligen DDR.Lebe jetzt in Köln. Aber immer wenn ich dich Tanzen sehe auf dem Eis, besonders die alten Aufnahme (CZcams), dann kommen mir heute noch,vor Freude!, die Tränen. Du bist und bleibst für mich die Spitze im Eiskunstlauf.

А мне, как ни странно, на программы и фигуристов тех времен смотреть интереснее, чем на нынешних малолетних акробатов и акробаток...

Again, Witt was VERY Lucky to win this, her last World title.
She doubled out of a triple Loop and a triple Salchow, and I believe singled a double axel.
Definitely she was not as confident here as she was at the Olympics a month earlier.
But as usual, Witt's competitors handed her another title on a silver platter.
I don't want to keep bringing up Debi's shortfall bc very few athletes could carry a pre-med course load while training for the Olympics, but where other ice skaters had fragile nerves, Katarina had a competitive fire that burned deep within her.
But on this day, Witt was def beatable.
Debi and Liz Manley again came up short when it mattered.
Agreed. I also see this a bit of a lifetime achievement award send-off. I seem to recall that Liz won the first two figures and then the judges did an ordinal flip in favour of Witt that was somewhat controversial. Very strong artistically but technically limited and past her technical prime.

Folks say Katarina had more technically difficult jumps early in her career, but I've yet to see them
She briefly performed the triple flip and double lutz-triple toe. I think she is co-credited with the first triple flip in competition.

The only other skaters in the history of women’s figure skating that I feel have the same nature sense of drama, intensity and flair are Nicole Bobek and Sasha Cohen.

She was ok. I did notice that in almost all her performances she stops in the middle of her program and is able to somewhat catch her breath and have a little rest. Most other skaters actually skate the whole performance without stopping.
Fair point but she did 4 jumping passes, 2 spins and a technically difficult step sequence all perfectly timed to the music in the first minute. If she’d been a fraction of a second out it would have looked a mess. That was tough going. she deserved the little rest

No lutz or flip? I only saw 2 axel, toe loop or salchow mainly. Was this normal then?
In 1988, it was kind of the very last time this could happen. This was the year that an increasing number of skaters were upping their jumping capacity. Midori Ito was becoming known for the 3 Axel, but her compulsory figures and presentation scores kept her buried. Liz Manley had a 3 Lutz, but she was not terribly refined on ice, leaving her as a player, but not the winner.
Katarina really needed to showcase the 3 Loop here, but could not. She relied this year on really being the only woman to have meaningful choreography, the ability to bring a whole vibe and the jumps were JUST good enough one more time.
If she'd competed in 1989, I'm not sure Kat would have made the podium as the jumps people were putting out for harder and more consistent as her own consistency declined.
She was fortunate for errors of others every step of the way this particular year. In 1989, Midori Ito blew up on the scene and won the title with a massive jump artillery and those under her were gaining the Flip and Lutz.

I'm not. The East Germans were still pro Soviet after the reunification. That's how Oksana Baiul won the Gold over a flawless Nancy Kerrigan. The German judge scored the little Ukranian higher than Kerrigan because he was disgusted that America might produce yet another Ice Princess. However, if she hadn't been knee-knocked, it is doubtful if either Kerrigan or big, bad Tonya would have made the Olympic podium even if Harding had played fair and come in second at the Nationals. Kerrigan would not have had as much confidence coming to Norway in 1994 as she did winning the bronze in Albertville in 1992. But she is richer and more famous than Oksana and most Gold medalists and that should have served some purpose as well. I'm glad for that fact.

I think there were only two clean triples though well done (the garbage / easy triples) and no double axel. This is ridiculous. I would have gien first in the free to Manley.

The stupid commentator does not not, that in the German word "Eiskunstlauf" is included the word "Kunst" (art), while in English is only "Figure Skating". Katharina Witt focused on both athleticism and artistic enjoyment, while the American sports women forgot about the later.

Drama queen maybe. This is a sports competition and she lacked the technique to justify that win. So happy that the scoring finally changed - so the favorites cannot just get " gifts"
No longer such impressive touching artistic program might be expected. So many drug drunken Russian little girls and too many athletic skills assessments are ruining the art of figure skating.
She has absolutely no flexibility.

From a technical perspective, she was average at best. But....being pretty and somewhat artistic, the ISU and many judges over inflated her marks for the good of the sport. She was fortunate that powerhouses like Ito were deliberately marked down and that more technically talented skaters were deliberately marked down in order for Witt to win. Many people are taken under her spell due to her good looks. I am not one of them. Witt may be (and probably is)...the most overrated skater in history.
